  1. Depends on the return. Almost any player is worth trading if the other team is willing to overpay. Buy low, sell high.
  2. Maybe you can see both games on Wednesday!
  3. Today on the StarTrib website Howard Sinker posted his 1987 preview. He had them picked for 6th in the division.
  4. Maybe we can get special dispensation for him to use a Segway on the bases.
  5. I didn't read the article but have to agree: I don't think this team is all that good either. There's no good explanation for why we have the best record in the league. It's befuddling.
  6. Anybody can do power rankings whether they know what they are doing or not. They are highly subjective. Every entity doing them has a different method of determining them. They have no bearing whatsoever on official MLB procedures and policies. And that's why they don't mean anything.
  7. Ah, yes. The Bostock/Carew/Hisle year. That offense was fun. They held up fairly well until the middle of August and then started playing all the teams with the best records and faded away.
  8. Correction--I think that was the last time the Twins won 20 games in May. They were 22-6 in June, 1991. There may have been others (2006, maybe?) but that one I know for sure.
  9. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe neither Robinson nor Bernier was on the 40-man last November. I don't think we had signed Robinson yet, and I think his contract was a minor league contract and so he wasn't added to the 40-man until just before the season started. And I'm pretty sure Bernier had to be added when he was called up earlier this month.
  10. I'm more confounded by this team than I have been with any Twins team I can remember. And I can remember 1964, maybe even a little 1963.
  11. Bernier. Oh, wait, I thought you said three 24-36 year olds.
  12. I think Tonkin has to stay down for 10 days except in case of injury. Maybe Thielbar? Or a position player?
  13. He and Toronto's starters both have 5.12 ERA's. Based on that in-depth analysis I'd say he has a 50/50 chance of accomplishing that.
  14. I think evaluating a player's offensive performance in terms of his defensive position overthinks things a little. I do think that it's more important for, say, a left fielder to contribute offensively than it is for, say, a catcher to do so, but if your lineup as a whole is a good one the positions the various players play isn't that important.
  15. Excellent use of sarcasm!
  16. There will always be people who will say to bring up a deep minor leaguer because he's doing so well there. The thing about that is that it's easy to ruin a baseball player by bringing him along too fast. As has been said many times by many people, baseball skills take much longer to mature than is the case in the other three major North American team sports. (With a few exceptions, for example NFL QB's.) The best way for a baseball player to realize his potential is to play against competition at or slightly above his level. This year's unexpectedly good W-L record notwithstanding, I think this organization needs to place development of its young talent as the highest priority and that means playing its prospects at the best level for their development unless the major league team has no other options. I think the Twins are indeed doing that. (Witness the likes of Bernier, Nunez, Schafer, Robinson and others on the major league roster. All are essentially placeholders.)
  17. Division records relative to .500: AL Central: +19 NL West: +9 AL West: -1 NL Central: -3 AL East: -11 NL East: -13
  18. Interesting. Several times over the years I've heard pitchers say they were too strong after extra rest (due to rainouts, all-star game breaks, etc.) and as a result they didn't pitch well. I don't know enough about pitching to explain how that makes a difference but I think there's probably a good reason that the 5-man rotation has become the standard. The Mets' situation is unique, having 3 starters on innings limits. I'd consider staying with a 5-game rotation but have 2 of the spots covered by the 3 pitchers in question, giving one of them the day off each time through. That way the other 3 pitchers are still pitching on normal rest.
  19. Perkins' biggest flaw as a closer is that he's left-handed. While not a major factor it is a disadvantage.
  20. Dale Mitchell hit 23 triples in 1949, as did Curtis Granderson in 2007. Stan Musial hit 20 in 1946, as did George Brett in 1979, Cristian Guzman in 2000 and Jimmy Rollins in 2007. No other player has hit that many since 1930. (Granderson had the advantage of playing half his games in the vast expanses of Comerica Park. Most other stadiums are half-vast!) Triples are interesting and fun to watch because in most cases you have to hit the ball very hard and run very fast. I don't have any way of quantifying this, but I'd guess Target Field is more triple-friendly than most stadiums and Buxton seems like the type of player who will hit a lot of them. It could be interesting and fun to watch.
  21. I'd love to hear PM and TR explain about the 13-man staff in general and about Stauffer in particular. There's obviously something going on that the fans don't know about.
  22. I disagree when it comes to starters and long relievers. I'd rather have my them throw fewer pitches, enabling them to pitch more innings. For short relievers I do agree beacuse pitch count is generally not a big factor.
