  1. Has Sano played even one game at 1B in his professional career? If he has I'm not aware of it. Before you pencil him in there he needs a lot of time at that position.
  2. Back in the 16-team era, and even in the 20-team era players didn't move around as much. pre-Curt Flood, you know.
  3. Interesting factoid from Dicknbert: If Lohse is the winning pitcher tonight he will be the 13th pitcher to record a win against every major league team.
  4. I've always thought with Hicks' arm he belongs in right field if he's not in center. On a major league team you put your least-skilled defensive player in left. (That's why Young and Willingham played there.) Left field is larger than right in Target Field but I think Rosario could easily cover that ground.
  5. I didn't see the play or watch the replays a dozen times so I don't know if the ball was catchable. Hicks obviously thought it was not, and for that reason I commend him for having the presence of mind to make a deke. This is exactly the type of thing Molitor wanted him to learn when he pulled him from the game in spring training. Hicks had his mind in the game and for that reason he was ready to do what was needed based on the game situation. The end result didn't work out but he did slow Pedroia down so from that standpoint Hicks' strategy worked.
  6. But we still want to wait until the last possible day to decide what will give.
  7. DL's are always retroactive so the player can be activated as soon as possible if needed. You never want to restrict your roster unnecessarily. Nolasco might be needed sooner, for example in case of injury to another starter.
  8. drjim is right. Whether they DL'd Nolasco on Sunday or today his DL time is retroactive to his last appearance, and either way they needed Milone to start a game because of the rainout. Waiting until today left open the option of starting Nolasco on Saturday. Waiting until today also allowed them more flexibility in choosing whose place on the roster Milone is taking. And Milone couldn't have pitched before today anyway.
  9. Regarding rehabbing vs being optioned: The player is still on the DL while rehabbing, and I believe there is a limit on rehab time, and I assume Arcia reached the limit, which is why he was optioned now as opposed to doing it sooner.
  10. I'm pretty sure this is not the case. He was still on the 25-man while on the DL (which includes rehab time) so it's only when he was actually optioned that the service time clock stopped ticking. I don't think you can option a player while he's disabled, and if he was healthy they could have optioned him as soon as the 15 days expired.
  11. All-time W-L record between the Twins and the Red Sox: 301-301.
  12. Stick a fork in him. (Hoping for the Hunter effect.)
  13. The X factor in the latest roster moves is that they don't yet know about Nolasco. It's obvious that Plan A is for him to pitch Saturday and for that reason it makes sense to have Milone pitch on Thursday because that means Pelfrey, Hughes and May can pitch on regular rest next week. If Nolasco does have to be DL'ed they want to wait as long as possible before doing so.
  14. Concur. Player development trumps win-loss record this season. The Twins are still rebuilding. The major league team's record is a pleasant surprise but the primary objective of this organization is to become a perennial strong contender.
  15. Nor is it likely he'll get a concussion. I'm saying it's more likely that he'll hit 40 than it is that he will get a concussion. And if the two players were not on your list to be considered for a trade I'm confused about why you would mention them on the post of yours that I quoted.
  16. What's much more likely in 3 years is Buxton could be hitting .340 and Sano could be hitting 40 dingers. While the future is never certain I'll choose to plan on those two and others currently in the minors doing well for the big club in the future rather than giving that up to improve this year's team.
  17. I'd rather have Milone as my long man/spot starter than Stauffer.
  18. A general comment: why the urge to make a major trade at this stage? Things seem to be riding along fairly well for the major league team and the minors are populated with a number of highly-regarded prospects. My guess is we can fill most of our needs in-house for now. Regarding this proposal: Terry Ryan has been able to cobble together decent bullpens the last few years without overpaying any Chapman types. Let him continue to find Fiens and Boyers instead of sacrificing prospects and money for a player that would have only very slightly more impact on the W-L record.
  19. Pitching depth was less important then. In 1987 you could win a championship with only 2 solid starters because you only had to win 2 series and could get through the postseason with a 3-man rotation. Today you'd better have 3 solid starters and a satisfactory #4, especially if you're a wild card team.
  20. Good analysis. I'm guessing TR falls into the futurist camp, this in spite of public proclamations the last couple springs that the Twins want to win this year.
  21. My sentiments as well, and, even though I'm a paeon newbie here, might I add that I think it's good to avoid injecting political viewpoints. The discussions can get contentious enough just with baseball as the topic.
  22. I agree that trading Pelfrey will probably not help this year's team but having a good record on June first should be viewed as a pleasant surprise, not as a sign that we should make an all-out effort to win the WS this year. (IMHO, of course.) Current success notwithstanding, I think building for next season and beyond should still be the organization's primary focus. Trading a good starter who is in the last year of his contract and who is unlikely to be with the team next season makes sense from that point of view, especially if we can find a team willing to buy high, like last year's Oakland A's. Edited to add: if we feel Pelfrey is a pitcher we should keep then start talking extension.
  23. Any trade is worth making if the other team wants to overpay.
  24. Whoa, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Let's see how he handles high A before we talk about AA, much less AAA. To jump 3 levels in one season is rare.
