  1. I posted this in the MLB Baseball Forum. I posted it there because even though this brought it to mind it was not directly related.
  2. Great, great slapstick comedy (play on words intended). I think I remember Paul Newman saying it was one of the most fun-to-make movies of his career.
  3. Baseball people will tell you balls hit straight over the head of an outfielder are the most difficult ones to judge. I give Hicks (and almost everyone else) the benefit of doubt on those.
  4. I think it would be very interesting for all the Royals to be voted to start the game. It would help to reinforce what a farce the ASG has become.
  5. For those who are not aware of this site, it reviews all ejections in MLB and assigns points to umpires based on whether the call leading to the ejection was correct. There is also almost always a link to a video of the play. I don't visit very often but it is another perspective on umpires and their performances. It's certainly not the best way to evaluate umpire performances because it evaluates only plays resulting in ejection but it can be interesting. There are other features of the site as well. http://portal.closecallsports.com/
  6. If Baltimore would throw in a bag of used baseballs we'd come out ahead in that deal.
  7. Those are some extremely optimistic ifs. Unrealistically optimistic, IMHO. Each of those ifs could just as easily be subtractions of 2 wins, and in the AL Central this year that could mean a fast ride to last place.
  8. I don't think it would hurt his development permanently. But after missing all last year I think the Twins feel it's highly important for him to play 3B as much as possible just to try to make up for lost time. I don't think the Twins want to spend time and effort having him learn 1B with Vargas, Kepler and ABWII all potentially playing there in the future. And how much of a difference would DHing Sano really make for the Twins this season? I highly doubt his presence would increase the team's win total more than 1 or 2 over a 2-3 month period, and given how rookies frequently struggle at first it could easily cost the team a couple wins. I think the best course is to have him play 3B every day in AA or AAA until the time comes to play there in the majors. What we hope for is for him to force the Twins' hand, like when Morneau forced the Twins to move Mientkiewicz out.
  9. I think ABWII is certainly a prospect worth watching, but to say he would be great if he didn't strike out so much would have gotten this response from my late grandfather: "Yeah, and if my aunt had ****s she'd'a' been my uncle!" (Waiting to see if the mods let this one stand.)
  10. The makeup of the bench is just another of many examples demonstrating that the Twins are really still rebuilding. They have a good W-L record at the moment but that's just a pleasant accident. That doesn't mean that prospects can't be brought up, but we shouldn't do it if we think it will hurt their development and we shouldn't expect .300 BA's and a postseason berth if we do.
  11. The makeup of the bullpen is just another of many examples demonstrating that the Twins are really still rebuilding. They have a good W-L record at the moment but that's just a pleasant accident. That doesn't mean that prospects such as these three can't be brought up, but we shouldn't do it if we think it will hurt their development and we shouldn't expect sub-2.00 ERA's and a postseason berth if we do.
  12. The development of Buxton and Sano is more important than making the postseason in 2015. Not a universally shared opinion but the correct one in my mind. Unless there's an emergency they should be called up when they are ready and not before, regardless of the major league standings.
  13. Love the sarcasm!
  14. I doubt the Brewers would part with Lucroy if the Twins didn't give up one of their top 5 prospects.
  15. If memory serves I think the Twins (and maybe other major league teams) used to play one exhibition game a year against the AAA team at the AAA stadium. The idea was to give the AAA fans a chance to see the major leaguers. This was discontinued long ago, presumably because in this day and age it's considered a liability to make your players play an extra meaningless game. It hadn't occurred to me to give the major league fans a chance to see the minor leaguers, but I'd think it would not be worth the logistical headaches.
  16. When I read posts advocating Sano to be called up I don't know whether to be or or or some combination. I know my view is not a universally held opinion, and may not even be a majority opinion but I say cool your jets. He's not ready. Dude is barely 22. He missed all last year. He's doing OK in AA. Not bad, not great, but OK. He has never prepared to play any position other than 3B and the Twins don't have an urgent need for a 3B right now. The record of the major league team should not have any bearing whatsoever on when he is called up. A baseball player can be set back big time by being called up too soon. If Plouffe, Escobar, Nunez and Bernier all have season-ending injuries, then maybe there'd be no choice, but barring something like that he'll be in the minors until he's ready.
  17. I think Hicks is probably one of the top 3 outfielders in the organization at this point in time. He's an average offensive player, maybe a little less, but his defense has been top notch. Next year I expect our four outfielders to be Arcia, Buxton, Hicks and Rosario. Buxton will play center. Hicks will play right or, when Buxton has a day off, center. Arcia will play left or, when Vargas has a day off, DH. Rosario will play left or right when Hicks or Arcia has a day off. I'd anticipate that Hicks, Arcia and Rosario will get approximately equal playing time.
  18. He'll be ready when he's ready. Not only is he barely 22 but he didn't play in 2014. That means he's probably close to a year behind where he would have been. And very few players, even elite players, play well in the majors at age 22.
  19. First, a two-game losing streak is no reason do anything with the roster you wouldn't have done otherwise. Small sample size, people. Second, the team is still in first place. Third, I'm a futurist, not a presentist, so I say put the development of the players ahead of trying to win as many games as possible. That doesn't mean I think the team should tank games. Players should try to play their best whenever they are in the game, but TR and PM should make sure the top prospects are properly handled.
  20. The reason someone would not want them on the same roster is because Plouffe is good enough be the everyday third baseman on a major league team and Sano needs to play third base every day. Keep in mind Sano is barely 22 years old. Playing him once or twice a week in the majors at this stage would hinder his development. Not good.
  21. I think it's best to avoid using the word dumb, so I won't use it to respond to this post. I disagree with this post, because Santana is the furthest-advanced shortstop prospect in the organization and almost everyone feels he has more potential than Escobar. I think making Santana the starting shortstop out of spring training was the best option the team had coming out of spring training.
  22. spinowner, on 31 May 2015 - 09:24 AM, said: Interesting. Several times over the years I've heard pitchers say they were too strong after extra rest (due to rainouts, all-star game breaks, etc.) and as a result they didn't pitch well. I don't know enough about pitching to explain how that makes a difference but I think there's probably a good reason that the 5-man rotation has become the standard. The Mets' situation is unique, having 3 starters on innings limits. I'd consider staying with a 5-game rotation but have 2 of the spots covered by the 3 pitchers in question, giving one of them the day off each time through. That way the other 3 pitchers are still pitching on normal rest. Bert made reference to this at the beginning of the game, saying that it can especially be true for sinkerballers, and again after Gibson gave up his third home run.
  23. Boy, not paying attention. Department of redundancy department.
