    Great post, Mike! Thanks for taking the time to put it together. Before the season when MLB announced one hard trade deadline on 7/31 my hope was everyone's timeline would move up a month. Unfortunately that is not happening so far... Maybe it will happen in future seasons.

    Excellent blog post. I've been contemplating the situation with Schoop over the last few weeks, and still don't know the right answer... I concur with you that dealing Schoop for players who won't help in 2019 is probably ill-advised. We don't know who will get injured later this year or who will struggle with performance. On the flip side... What if he continues this slide at the plate? He showed last year his slumps can last months, and if he wasn't good enough for Milwaukee's playoff team, why should he be for the Twins? He's primarily 2B and can't really play other positions around the field. Could that bench spot be used on a utility player? Or a better bench bat? I'm guessing he will stay for the season... Perhaps we'll regret keeping him on the bench if he's used sparingly. Perhaps he finds the sweet stroke again... Fun to think about!

    I agree the sloppy fundamentals are contributing to this slide. That should correct itself over time because the talent is there and they didn't just forget how to catch and throw a baseball. My primary focus is supplementing the team for a playoff run, and the biggest weakness is the pitching staff. My first post about Falvey and Levine getting on the phone ASAP is related to that. We need to raise the floor in the bullpen so when a pitcher doesn't have it that day, there's another quality pitcher available to bring in. Right now they don't have that luxury. By default, May is the 2nd or 3rd best reliever. They need another reliever or 2 for the stretch run.

    If you're fully aware, why did you reply "many believed Romero was going to end up in the pen because he didn't have what it took to be a starter, and we've seen plenty of starters turn into relievers successfully before."? If Romero didn't throw enough innings to be considered as a starter, the same thought should be applied to Graterol. He's pitched less innings than Romero in the minors.

I hope he gets the opportunity again to start.

    I would argue Trevor May's beach ball curve changed the course of the game but YMMV. Do you think this pitching staff is ready for a playoff run as it stands today?

    I don't anticipate all 3 pending free agents returning so he would take one of Gibson, Odorizzi, or Pineda's spot in the rotation. I guess the leash would last until July since it's impossible to make a trade before the last day... If he fails, the Twins are littered with prospects they need to make decisions on.

    Falvey and Levine need to get on the phone and fix this mess, ASAP. Can we stop coddling starting pitchers and not take them out when they're cruising through a game?

    I hope that's exactly what the plan is this off-season for him. Moving him to the bullpen was ill-advised from the get go. It was a cheap attempt to get a bullpen arm for $550k instead of spending money last winter.

    Not so fun stat: Trevor May has 3 '1-2-3' innings since April. Not exactly what I would call a legit setup man.

    Falvey and Levine have a couple of weeks to make a decision with Schoop. Wouldn't be opposed to trading him for A ball players if they believe Arraez is going to project as the better player going forward. The risk is moving him to the bench for the playoffs just like Milwaukee did last year.

    Stashak should be next in line for a promotion to Minnesota. Hoping that it's not Romero again or Cody Allen. Reward the hot hand. Not sure if Rooker said anything else to the ump besides "That was up." Pretty quick trigger finger from the ump there. Though I do concur with the call in the 9th. The batter leaned into the pitch with his knee. And of course, this is your weekly PSA that Balazovic is really good.

    IMO you're looking at the wrong stats over the last 25 years Tom. I don't think runs per game is the problem. It's how the runs are driven in, primarily by hitting the ball over the fence. Which is happening at an exponential rate over the last 2-3 years. I think MLB is taking the wrong strategy to attract a young audience. It feels like they're just catering to the 15 second highlight crowd showcasing nothing but home runs, strike outs, and the occasional sweet catch. It's not helping getting more butts in seats at ballparks, and it's not really compelling to watch on TV either. I think this topic would really gain more steam if hitters spoke up about the balls too. Wouldn't this gain more traction if an all time hitter like Albert Pujols said "It was more difficult for me to hit baseballs out when I was 22. I shouldn't be hitting pop ups at 39 and have them land 5 rows over the fence."

    Sano has looked MUCH much much much better lately. It's amazing how cutting down on strikeouts allows him to put the ball in play more often. I don't expect him to maintain a 15% K-rate. Nor do I expect him to climb back into the 50% rate either. If he can continue this trend and lower his overall rate to 30%, that will be huge.
