  1. I get where you're coming from spy... Frankly I'm frustrated that this is all they have to work with.
  2. Too bad 26 year old Melotakis and 26 year old Trevor Hildenberger are simply too young to pitch in the lowest leverage innings like Tonkin....
  3. Must have missed that success in between the moon shots from his off-speed pitches. If others will feel better looking at Tonkin for another 2 months before deciding to pull the plug, that's fine. I jumped off the bandwagon about 15 miles ago.
  4. Yep. I think there's already a few of them down in the minors right now. Tonkin minor league career K/9 - 9.3 Melotakis - 8.6 Nick Burdi - 12.6 Jake Reed - 8.78 Jay - 8.7 All of them can be described as decent relievers that throw hard. To answer your second paragraph.... No. Wouldn't wring my hands over Tonkin having a good season elsewhere. I know you've been a Tonkin apologist for a long time. He's a typical middle relief pitcher.
  5. Yep. In fact, the bullpen is one of the easiest groups to patch together on a baseball team. There really hasn't been any excuse for the last 3 years.
  6. There were several bounce back candidates waiting and available in FA. They just decided to go with the same route as usual.... Mediocre placeholders hoping that the 3rd year is the charm waiting for these awesome RP prospects in the minors.
  7. How lucky is Rogers?! He gets not 1, not 2, but 3(!!) veteran pitchers giving him constant guidance and attention. Are the veterans going to set up 8 hour shifts to hold his hand throughout the day?
  8. Finally, a thread where I can use these rose-color sunglasses that came in the mail... This will be Sano's breakout year. All-Star representative, adequate defense. Flirts with 40 HRS. Draws nearly 100 walks. OPS close to .900
  9. I disagree we would ever look back at it as a critical misstep. Tonkin is nothing more than a typical 6th-7th inning reliever. They did not trust him to pitch in any high leverage situation last season. I've posted this before. Let's say you walk into a bar mid-conversation. You hear "He's a decent reliever that throws hard." Would you narrow that down to Tonkin? Or is that describing 7 other relievers available in the minors?
  10. We need a BYTO filter name for D Santana. Every time I read his name my blood pressure rises a few points.
  11. 24 HRs at the All-Star Break, then he's traded for a ransom of good pitching prospects.
  12. Man, I hope you all aren't disappointed with the final stat line... Lots of optimism for a nearly 34 year old.
  13. .750 OPS is pretty lofty, but it's possible if he doesn't play against lefties. Not sure if I trust Molly to sit Mauer as much as we would like this season. I think he settles in with a .700-.730 OPS for his last full season of starting.
  14. 26th ranked Starting Pitching, and 27th ranked bullpen. This should be a fun year....
  15. Concur. Andrew Miller hasn't thrown that many innings in a season since 2008. I would not be surprised if there were a few kinks in that hose to put out fires this season. I'm also with you that bullpen usage/strategy has not changed during the regular season. We'll most likely see teams copy the same blueprint Cleveland and Chicago did during the playoffs, but until it happens in the regular season, I'm going to believe in the status quo....
  16. So now that we've gone through all of the teams, what's everyone's predictions for AL Central Standings at the end of the year? Mine would be: Cleveland 90+ wins Detroit 82-87 wins Kansas City 75-80 wins Chicago 70-75 wins Minnesota 90+ losses
  17. That's fair. I've heard descriptors for those guys before, and didn't look into it before typing.
  18. Robertson should be traded for sure. It's similar to the Twins situation with Perkins back in 2012... No reason to have a very good closer on a bad team. Quintana still has 3 years left on his contract and potentially still could be on the next good White Sox team. Unless someone gives them a godfather offer from the farm, I think he stays. If there's one thing we know about the Sox, it's that they let their prospects sink or swim at the MLB level. One thing I'm very jealous about as a Twins fan.
  19. The thing is, the White Sox didn't really do a "fire sale" per say. They still have All-Star 3B Todd Frazier, slugger 1B Jose Abreu, All-Star closer Dave Robertson, 2 young, good to very good pitchers in Quintana and Rodon. They sold 2 great assets and filled up the cupboards in the minors acquiring their top 4 org prospects this off-season. Their "fire sale" could still happen in July if they choose to sell off the names mentioned in the first paragraph. Until then, they could actually be decent.
  20. I'm of the belief that if they really wanted Berrios to start the season in Minnesota, they would put together a schedule like this. The "not stretched out enough" explanation for sending down Berrios does make sense, but it's also convenient. And frankly, Sanitago has to do mostly the same schedule you're talking about to get stretched out himself.
  21. This scout lost me at Buxton needs to bunt. #NeverBunt
  22. I don't know, it seemed to work briefly for Hughes. I think more importantly, they need to let Santiago pitch the way he always has in the past. When they tried making him pitch with more control last season, he was lit up more than a Christmas tree.
  23. I'm buying into Santiago being an effective, dare I say, above average starter for this team. If they don't tweak his mechanics too much, and let him pitch "effectively wild" I think he can outperform his FIP once again.
  24. I wish we could bookmark this post, and then take bets on what date Bert says this exact quote.
