  1. Maybe it's Frankie Franchise, but just a another franchise!
  2. The ultimate Twins' Twin team is: Catcher : Joe Mauer (local guy) 1B: Doug Mientkiewizc (tough choice between Dougie B-Ball and the local guy Herbie - but Dougie bleeded Twins more and is a current minor league coach) 2B: Rod Carew (married a local girl and returns regularly to assist at Spring Training etc.) SS: Roy Smalley (despite the pompadour) 3B: Corey Koskie (Heck, he took out a full-page farewell ad in the Strib when he left!) OF: Tony Oliva (By now he is the all-time Mr. Twin, if only for longevity with the organization), Harmon Killebrew (obvious choice) Kirby Puckett - - (legendarily obvious) Some will insist that Torii Hunter must be part of this outfield. Yet Torii played for two other teams and I expect Torii would not even disagree with the choices above. Utility IF: Frank Quilici (gotta put "The Q" somewhere on this team!) RHP: Bert Blyleven (even though he bounced around, he returned to be a broadcaster) LHP: Jim Kaat (same as Bert, even though he later left to do color for the Yankees) Reliever: Eddie Guardado (I'd pick him every day) Manager: Tom Kelly (won two World Championships - still helps out annually at Spring Training, etc) Play By Play: Dick Bremer (You might somehow think Carneal, but Bremer is a native Minnesotan and is more emotional about the team) Color Commentator: Halsey Hall (for those too young to remember, just trust me on this one - the hacking up phlegm added to the color!)
  3. Yes, if Sano gets injured, he's replaced by Kepler. That's almost certainly a downgrade offensively, and not enough of an upgrade defensively to significantly offset that. OK, I guess I have to make a reference to Ozzie Arcia - There I did it. It's too early to call him a nonfactor. No, it's probably not too early! I agree Reusse is optimistic. I just disagree with his worry about injuries.
  4. Reusse indeed does say that: "The Twins could finish from second to fifth (nobody's beating Kansas City) in the salty Central, depending on whether they are one of the teams that is struck with injuries or one that avoids them." Aside from a disaster like losing three starters, I don't think the Twins can be doomed by injuries this year. Indeed, the team is deep with talent, which is ready or nearly ready, and certain injuries could actually help the team improve. Does anyone really think that replacing an injured Rickie Nolasco with Jose Berrios would be likely to doom this team, for example? And I think Nolasco deserved to be named a starter. I pick Kansas City to win the division, but each of the teams in this division appears capable of putting a division winning season together - So Reusse is wrong in saying NOBODY can beat them!!!.
  5. In today's Star and Sickle, Perkins downplayed his apparent loss of velocity in Spring Training. Maybe he's right and has an all-star year. Then again, maybe he plays out the rest of his career as a LOOGY or worse. In that case, maybe the Twins should start grooming Trevor May as the short-term answer at closer (and maybe one of their minor league power arms as the long-term answer).
  6. Reusse seems to think that injuries could doom the TWins. But the Twins are deep at every position and many injuries could open up a spot for a more talented replacement. What happens if the Twins lose a player to injury: Starting pitcher:: Replaced by Berrios or Duffy (probable upgrade) Relief Pitcher: Replaced by Burdi, Chargois or one of the other numerous power arms in the minors (possible upgrade) Mauer: Park moves to first, Sano backs up 1B and is at DH more, Kepler comes up to play regularly in the outfield (possible upgrade)' Dozier: Polanco is a downgrade, but likely to make a good contribution. Escobar: Santana takes over at SS, and who knows what happens? Plouffe: Sano takes over at 3B and Kepler to RF.(possible upgrade) Rosario or Buxton: Replaced by Kepler (likely downgrade, but still will make a decent contribution) Suzuki or Murphy: John Hicks had a decent Spring but it's still a probable downgrade. In other words, Reusse is wrong. Even 3 or 4 injuries would not be a disaster, and may lead to a net improvement, if spread throughout the roster. I agree, losing 3 or 4 starting pitchers, or both catchers, would be problematic.
  7. The radio broadcast had Park's GS as a towering fly against the wind which made it over. Didn't sound like tape measure stuff to me. But it's encouraging.
  8. What? Nick Gordon is no longer an infield option in the future. Methinks that omission was by mistake!
  9. So, whom would you want as a teammate? The guy who snitched on his fellow teammate in high school for smoking pot. Or the guy who took a thirty day suspension and a financial hit in the draft rather than snitch on a teammate. This isn't a "Black Sox" violation, this is a fellow teammate smoking a little weed. If I'm a potential teammate, I like this guy's attitude! Gonsalves can be expected to have the back of his fellow players.
  10. I guess he won't be supporting Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio (Cuban Candidates) or Bernie Sanders (Jewish Candidate). I think the more appropriate term for both of the Delmon incidents is "Bigoted" rather than "racist." Cuban is nor a "race" nor is being Jewish being part of a "race". Maybe the punishment will be to send him to Cuba - How about Guantanemo..
  11. And don't nobody say: "I don't know!" "Third Base!!!!" Presuming Buxton or Santana starts the season in CF, it seems that Rosario is better suited to play LF, since he's already been successful there and because he has better speed to cover that bigger LF area at Target Field. Therefore, the Twins should be experimenting (if at all) with Sano in RF, where he would have less ground to cover. I suspect that he'd have the arm to keep runners from going first to third, since he apparently had the arm to play third base. So, can someone tell me why he'd be better suited to play LF rather than RF????????????
  12. But I think 5/2 odds are better than 4/1 odds. And I don't even gamble that much.
  13. Maybe move Sano to catcher. Just kidding. I think the Twins will look for catching depth in the draft.
  14. Whether Park starts in Rochester or up with the big league club depends on his performance in Spring Training. I suspect he starts in AAA
  15. Plouffe played the outfield in past. Why not move him back to RF, with Sano at 3B? Plouffe is versatile and a very good athlete. Rosario in LF. Competition between Buxton and Kepler for CF, and possibly they prove unworthy of breaking with the big league club, but Arcia does show his worth again. Then Arcia in RF, Plouffe in LF and Rosario in CF. The Twins have flexibility in the OF if they're willing to move Plouffe there. Don't give up any more pieces in the outfield, make Plouffe a piece to use there.
  16. So, it looks like all Korean players are injury-prone, since that guy with the Pirates went to the DL in September. Just kidding.
  17. Plouffe to RF, Sano at 3B, Mauer at 1B. Trade one or two of our outfielders NOT named Buxton for a legit catcher. It's too early to give up on Mauer. He may still have one, two or possibly three .290 average or better seasons left in him. Plouffe has shown he can play right field, especially since he'll have a speedy CF and LF out there with him. Sano may ultimately move to first, but he'll make his best adjustment to MLB if comfortable in his current defensive position.
  18. Everyone seems to think there is aq choice between Plouffe and Sano and Sano wins. Plouffe, however, has proven to be very versatile, For Example - Why not trade Hicks and move Plouffe to Right Field? The Twins had below average run production in 2015 and cannot afford to lose their #1 RBI guy, Trevor Plouffe.
  19. I disagree with some on your list. Twins should try to re-sign Fien and Boyer, who had adequate to good years.. The Twins need lefties (especially in the unlikely event that both Cotts and Duensing are not with the club in 2016), so they should NOT DFA Logan Darnell. He had good stats at Rochester - give him a big look in Spring Training. Nunez has proven his worth, and should be kept around as a back-up infielder. Otherwise, I agree with your proposed decisions on the 40 man roster. Maybe it's time to DFA Danny Santana.
  20. Thanks to the Twins and Twins Daily for a great 2015. I'm looking forward to a great 2016 for our squad. The Twins have a lot of things they should do in the offseason (signing a catcher for the very near-future,, mentored by Suzuki, figuring out the 40 man roster and addressing the Plouffe-Sano dilemma) and things NOT to do (NO to signing more free agent SPs, NO to bringing back Pelfrey and, barring injury, incarceration or a horrible Spring, NO to looking for anyone other than Escobar to start at SS). I'm so optimistic, I'm thinking Mauer will hit over .300 again with over 90 RBIs, Dozier will start to hit outside pitches the other way, Tyler Duffey and Ervin Santana will tie for the 2016 Cy Young, Byron Buxton will win the 2016 Rookie of the Year and every other top ten prospect will become a perennial all-star before 2018.
  21. He's looked better the last week. Two hits last night. In fact, one hit would have been a single for every other player in MLB, but Byron was thinking Double the whole way and ended out at 2B standing up. He's going to find himself safe at 1B on bunts as well. The Twins should keep running him out there. This is a special player who will not need much time to become acclimated to the majors.
  22. By the way, his agent is Scott Boros. But, I'm not sure that is the dagger in any possible negotiation with the Twins that it used to be.
  23. This unrestricted free agent is still only 29 years old. Came back from Tommy John in June. Great defensively. Switch Hitter with some power. He'd look great as Twins catcher with Suzuki as back-up. Bottom Line: No Way!!!!!!!!!!
  24. Nolasco has very little trade value. The Twins have a bevy of mid-rotation starting pitching talent, and prospects hopefully ready in the next 2-3 years (Kohl Stewart, Gonsalves and more) . I would suggest trading any one or two of the following three valuable younger pitchers: Kyle Gibson, Trevor May, Alex Meyer, & Tyler Duffy. The Twins should target a good young mlb level catcher, or a top 10 prospect,(among catchers) who is projected to be at MLB level by at least 2017 - better if he's ready by mid-2016. The Twins are going to need a catcher soon, probably now. Suzuki has one more year, and could be very helpful as a mentor in a back-up role for at least part of next season (and maybe extend him to be back-up/mentor for another year if can continue to hit 20 points above the Butera line).
