Time to start the Eddie Esckie watch. Unless they really need two utility infielders, Adrianza looks like the #1 option. Escobar has made a great contribution in previous years. It's time to cut him loose. Nick Gordon may be here in September..
I suspect that the college player has more seasoning, and less time to blow out an elbow before making it to MLB. Nevertheless, the Twins have a pretty good flow of players who have just come from the minors and who are nearly ready. Why not take the guy with the biggest upside although arguably farther in the future. That would be Hunter Greene.
Twins have talent almost ready. Not a bad time to take a high schooler with superstar 100mph potential. I don't want to see the new regime "go safe" with a college player like Kyle Wright or Brendan McKay.
Gibson starts for Rochester in tonight's game. I truly think the Twins should see if he could fit in a different role. The definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
I suspect the Twins and Red Wings plan to use him as a starter. Why not convert him into a reliever like they did with Rick Aguilera? This is a pitcher in whcih the Twins have invested much time and hope. Put him in a different setting and see what he can do!
I think Gibson would be able to focus better on 1-2 innings. I'm worried about his ability to focus on pitching many innings as a starter. No amount of time in the minors will do it for him. It's time to convert him to a role in relief. He certainly has more ability than most of this putrid pen. No trades for relievers. Wait for Chargois, Burdi, Reed, Melo, Jay . . . Things will go better as some of these pitchers prove their worth as others prove their lack of it.
Bullpen ideas: Bring up: 1. Gibson to pitch in the pen 2. Mejia to pitch in the pen. 3. Chargois, Burdi, maybe even Reed, Jay, Wheeler, Wimmers . . . Cut Haley, Breslow and Belisle. Pressly waiting to be next Put Giminez in the pen. .
Gibson seems to start out well and then starts to make mistakes. Maybe it's time to consider Kyle for a role in the bullpen, where he can pitch in smaller sample sizes. He could thrive in that environment. That opens up a spot for Berrios, and puts Mejia on the hot seat for demotion or to replace Breslow as a lefty in the pen. Santana and Santiago are worthy to stay in the rotation, Hughes is looking like he's deserving of a spot. So, it's Gibson or Mejia in competition NOT to lose their spot to Berrios. Gonsalves is not on the radar for a big league call-up yet.
I'm sure this has been noticed somewhere at TD, but just in case it wasn't: Ricky Nolasco started opening day for the Angels. That's right, the guy we cast off in the "Alex Meyer Trade". We had to pay them to take him. Did our front office miss something, or are the Angels CRAZY???
Maybe everyone who criticizes Kinsler is anti-Semitic. Or better yet, maybe we can all just chill out a bit about this. There has been commentary about Byung(no-space)Ho Park becoming more acclimated to American Culture, Nishi not having to worry about being taken out during a double play in Japan (why he got his leg broken in MLB)and whether Gary Gaetti became less aggressive after becoming "born again" religious. I have to believe learning to play in the warm climate of Latin America may lead to a different style of play than learning in a colder climate like Japan. Styles differ from the AL to the NL and from team to team. Teams sometime take on the personality of managers or team leaders. Culture does matter Frankly, I'm looking forward to the Brats and Beer nights in honor of Max Kepler.
There seem to be more reports of various Twins pitchers trying different pitches and approaches to pitching (Trevor May watching out for tipping off pitches by how he handles the ball in the glove, for example). Maybe Molitor thinks that announcing his staff lets those pitchers feel free to experiment during Spring Training, without fear of losing their jobs. Nevertheless, I don't think anyone "not named Ervin" has earned that luxury.
I view Sano as the First Baseman of the Future. Someone from the glut of middle infield talent could then take over at 3B, If not Sano, other players can transition into 1B. No need for signing 1B of the future unless the Twins think he us a future Superstar..
Mauer commented on how great he feels to Sid yesterday on the Sports Huddle on 830 AM. He also mentioned that he felt great before last year's spring training. Mauer said it several times since Sid asked the same question several times.
Gonsalves - How can a pitcher who is projected as a #3-4 starter be viewed as the Twins #2 Prospect? Either his ceiling is higher or he should be ranked lower. My opinion is that his ceiling is higher. I'd like to believe that Gonsalves' potential has been mis-underestimated
I think the Twins DFAed Park because he was likley to clear waivers. If he clears, then he is available to contend for DH with Vargas and maybe others. If another club picks him up , then the Twins have shed a contract, where I suspect they think they overpaid. Great move.
Sorry, I must have looked at stale info on Jeren - He has been out of H.S. for a bit and is from Vandy. Still I'd like to see Faedo do well this year and make the Twins decision easy. Twins need pitching help sooner not later. They have enough prospects and young players in the outfield. I'm hoping this is the last year where there is a lot of debate about the draft, because I hope we will be preoccupied with progress at the major league level.
Hopefully, the Twins take a step forward THIS SEASON to where we are debating how they compete in the Central next winter! Nevertheless, our squad does have the first pick again in the MLB Draft. I suspect the new regime will take a college pitcher unless a BPA (Best Player . . .) blows them away. The consensus top three looks like this: 1. Jeren Kendall - OF High schooler from Wisconsin. 2. Hunter Green - High School RHP 3. Alex Faedo - U of Fla - RHP I think the Twins are interested in results sooner than later - before Target Field becomes completely empty. They are already waiting for the high schooler they took last year (Alex Kirilloff) and may never see anything out of fmr high schooler/draft pick Kohl Stewart. So, barring any injuries or poor performance, I think they'll take the Florida College RHP Alex Faedo. If the Twins take him, I just hope he's better than Lenny Faedo.
Buxton is the leadoff hitter of the future for this club. Dozier is best at #3 and Mauer should be #6 or #7 (unless he bounces back and has a surprising .300 plus year - then he's #2).
Mauer's performance in the next two years is \dependent on his ability to stay healthy enough. And that is healthy enough to play well, not just to play. I am skeptical that Joe has this durability. However, if he can reach that level of health, he can put up numbers at age 34 and 35 like Mark Grace, John Olerud and Will Clark. A minimal power guy with decent ability to get on base and good fielding. If he hits .285 with 12 HRs and fields well - I'll take that for four games a week.
