  1. The ability to speak a half dozen languages doesn't do much for the ability to play ball.
  2. A better stat would be total possibility. A runner on 3rd is 1 possible base. Runner on 2nd is two possible bases. Runner on 1st is 3 possible bases and the batter himself is 4 possible bases. The batter has anywhere from 4 to 10 possible bases each time he comes up. A grand slam is 10 of 10. Divide the bases achieved by the possible bases. Seems even better than RBI % to me.
  3. Young guys got to prove it before you let one of them take over. Will take an injury or major slump for them to get the opportunity.
  4. I'd be much happier with Kepler in CF and any of Larnoch, Kiroloff or Rooker in RF.
  5. I think Chacin was brought in to compete for the 5th spot. Don't think that to this point the job has ever been his to lose.
  6. Would love to see 3 of the top 6 contributing before the end of the Summer and coming north next March / April.
  7. Kind of depends on the gap between your "best" arms and the rest. You could use your best arm(s) every 5th day and the rest on a different rotation. Just because it's not a conventional strategy doesn't mean it won't work.
  8. Resign Pineda. Sign one top FA. Trade for one starter. Somebody from within has to step up and become part of the rotation. Don't have a clue who any of those guys are going to end up being but this the formula we'll likely have to use. Signing more than one guy to a big FA contract is not likely, not so much because of the dollars needed but more because of the number of years needed to commit. Trading for a starter likely gives you a guy with two to three years of team control without committing big dollars for five or more years. Many will call that cheap but in reality it's smart. Keeps you from being hamstrung at the back end of multiple long term, big dollar contracts. Probably won't be popular but is the smart way to build.
  9. It also seems like said key players are adept at not performing up to expectations. Nothing wrong with the FO calling them out for that instead of leaving it up to the fan base to do so.....
  10. While not sexy the strategy is solid. Which players and how much would they have to pay them to be legitimate World Series contenders in 2019? Stay the course, develop the core, and don't block the advancement path of guys like Royce Lewis, Brusdar Graterol, Nick Gordon, Akil Badoo, Blayne Enlow, Lewin Diaz, Jose Miranda, Tyler Wells,Jaylin Davis, DaShawn Kiersey & Tyler Watson. Also need a little luck in hoping some of the young guys develop and hit the show and contribute a little sooner than expected.
  11. Austudillo's a nice story. But if you're counting on him you might as well pencil in another 90 loss season.
  12. May has 26 career starts and has started ONE game in the last 3 seasons. MIGHT be a stretch to call him a failed starter.
  13. I get that Austudillo is a fun guy to have around. So was Mickey Hatcher. Coincidence that we won a World Series AFTER Hatcher left?
  14. Bottom line is this move merely gives you another option when the balls start flying in March. Might make the club, might not. Same as Tyler Austin. Might make it might not. In a perfect world he gets 600 plate appearances, hits 25 home runs and drives in 85. Any move that decreases the chances of Robbie Grossman's 5 home runs being a vital cog in the lineup is a move worth taking.
  15. Still don't understand the infatuation with Grossman. .255 with a dozen home runs and 60 RBI would be a MONSTER year for him. Need to find a better option if you plan to go to the next level.
  16. "there aren't any glaring holes on the team now that Jason Castro has filled the void at catcher." WHAT? Signing 29 year old catcher who hasn't hit higher than .222 since 2013 because he frames pitches well is the signature move that is going to fix a 59 win team? They could have hired ME to run this team. I could have done that. Obviously this ain't rocket science. Just go on Facebook or Twins Daily, see what the first rube says to do and do it. BRILLIANT.
  17. Totally different. Established, 7 year veteran with a thousand big league games under his belt only asked to start 2 games.
  18. The only thing that has any bearing on Miguel Sano's career is where HE plays.
  19. Bottom line: It was stupid to take a guy who you are counting on to be the offensive cornerstone of your franchise for the next 15 years and move him to a position he'd never played. And to have his only preparation for such a move being "go learn it in the offseason." The fact that we're talking about a young Latin American ball player who already spends much of everyday life in the big leagues dealing with unfamiliarity only compounds the error. You either make the kid a DH or you leave him at the position he's played for most of his minor league career, where HE is comfortable, happy, enjoys and takes pride in playing. You leave him there for 3-5 years and see how he develops. If you're not satisfied you eventually move him to the other corner of the diamond and after that to DH. You can rationalize and assess the situation all you want. At the end of the day it was a dumb move. End of story. Move on and hope like hell the new front office is a little smarter than the previous one.
  20. Bottom line is that no sane person thought Sano in the OF was a good idea. Also if Molitor was complicit in that decision and not just following orders he should have been fired along with Ryan. As far as Schwarber goes he hasn't really played enough game in the OF to make any definitive decision on whether he can or should play out there either. He probably needs to play on an AL team.
  21. The only benefit those types of guys offer is to keep some guys who should spend more time on the farm doing so. This club does a great job of advancing guys thru the low minors in an orderly fashion. But it seems that once they hit the high minors management starts reading the blogs and promotes too many of them too early. If the presence of Dean and Albers kept Gonsalves from getting screwed up too soon at the big level I'm OK with that.
  22. Grossman might be OK as a platoon/DH but keeping him in that role means taking big league at bats away from the likes of Vargys, Park, Walker, Palka and even Rosario & Kepler. No thanks. Nothing to see here. Move along.
  23. Have to disagree just a little bit with the statement that Napoli is the type of guy that Ryan could never get. Someone else mentioned Thome in response to that statement but actually Josh Willingham's first year here was almost a mirror of Napoli's first in Cleveland, right down to the salary. Granted, the next 2 years didn't work out so well but I'll take 35 home runs and 110 RBI for $7 million six ways to Sunday.
  24. "Some of the Twins' top prospects have made the jump from Double-A to the big leagues but Gordon still has some flaws. Huge issue with this team. Guys work thru the lower minors in an orderly fashion, one level a year and when the get to the upper minors we promote within a half season or less and then wonder why they struggle at the big level. See: Buxton, Byron.
  25. If May is not in the rotation he's your closer. And somebody should be fired.
