    So, since he doesn't hit well, I'm guessing the Twins traded for Farmer because of his glove then?? I'm trying to figure out why we have him?

    I think this is why Farmer is on the roster. I mean he would have been the starting SS if they didn't re sign Correa. I see no reason to not give him the starting 2B gig with Gordon occasionally spelling him? Gordon will get at bats in the OF, DH and a little 2B too. But I think Farmer should start 85% of the time. JMO. I mean the Twins got him for this reason right here.

    Victory sports one. The Twins and Carl Pohlad started it. They were trying to copy the YES network, (Yankees). The cable and satellite companies denied them in their packages because they were trying to charge too much. It soon folded.

    I think Donnak is the guy who is kind of a longman type of relief pitcher. I just think he can come in and throw a lot of pitches and eat quite a few innings in games that the Twins are getting blown out in. He could be a bullpen savior during those blowout type games where you want to keep your other relievers rested and healthy. I don't really think being a starting pitcher is in his cards going forward. I also don't think he's some relief pitcher that can come in and shut someone down for an inning. I really think he's the guy that comes in during the 3rd of an 8 to 1 ballgame and throws 5 or 6 innings to finish the game out.

    And Ober started too. He didn't come in during the later parts of the game. So I'm pretty sure they are going to start him somewhere. Either in the rotation with the Twins then Maeda will be starting in the bp like he did with the Dodgers, or he will be starting in St. Paul until he gets the call up.

    Bailey Ober is starting his age 27 season. So if you compare him to Francisco Liriano, yeah he spent some time in the bullpen, but at age 21 he started 4 games and was in the bp for 2 games. In his age 22 season he started 16 games and came out of the bullpen 12 times and then I don't really think he was ever in the bullpen again for the Twins, in fact by the time Liriano was 27 the Twins were looking for places to trade him because he had a 5.09 era. Santana is also a little different because he was brought over as a rule 5 draft pick. So as a 21 year old he had to stay on the roster somehow and that wasn't going to be as a starter. But by the time Santana was 27 he had started like 152 games for the Twins. So yeah if Ober was 22 and he was bouncing back and forth between the bullpen the the rotation then you could make that analogy pretty easily. But he's in his age 27 season, if he is going to be a starter he needs to start 30 games this year. Now if the Twins are planning on making Ober a relief pitcher for the rest of his career in Minnesota then that's fine to put him in the pen, but if they have any hopes of him being a quality starter going forward (at his age) he needs to get those starting assignments.

    I mean, wouldn't it kind of hurt Bailey Obers development of he was put in a long relief stint or if he was piggy backed where he only throws 3 or 4 innings? Seems to me that you would want ober to be put on a routine to start 30 - 32 games this season. So if he isn't in the starting 5 coming out of spring wouldn't you want to send him down so he could start every 5th day and get 30 - 32 starts? I mean maybe only 15 of those starts are in the minors and the other 15 are with the Twins when someone gets hurt or becomes ineffective. It just seems to me that you would want to train him to pitch 6 - 7 innings not 3? JMO. Also, if you go with a 6 man rotation then I think you need your pitchers to average 6 to 6 and 2/3rds of an inning everytime out so as to lower the dependence on using 4 or 5 relievers every game. I mean I know someone will say if the starter goes 5 then you only need 4 relievers that day, which gives you like 3 un-used guys for tomorrow. But let's be honest, when you stroll out 4 relief pitchers in a day one of them has a likely chance that he is off that day. So when the Twins have a 3 - 0 lead and they bring out their second relief pitcher of the day and he walks two guys and gives up a hit and now it's 3 - 1 you get his butt out of there and bring in another dude which will make you use 5 relief pitchers in that game. So with a 6 man rotation and one less relief pitcher they have to throw more innings in their less frequent starts. Again JMO.

    Yeah, I don't really care when in the game it happens and it really doesn't matter how high the ball was hit. It was a poor play and that should never happen. I mean we are just fans but if the coaching staff makes these types of excuses then we are going to hear a lot of excuses this season. It's obvious with a play like that, that either their heads weren't in the game or they didn't care, either way that needs to be corrected. Hopefully the coaching staff got on them about that because plays like that will lose a lot of ballgames. I am fully expecting to not see anyone tag up from second and score on a fly ball again this season. I mean it wasn't a strong throw to the cut, it was ho hummed to the cut because I'm pretty sure he didn't think the guy was going to try and score. So yeah it was a heads up play by the Red Sox player or maybe the 3rd base coach? But again that shouldn't happen. After a couple of poor plays and a snowball fight I hope the Twins left feeling a little disappointed with their play in the field. I expect that they will be better and sometimes it may take a poor play like that to wake them up and get after it a little bit better. Again I get that it's spring training but I can't get used to hearing excuses for plays like that.

    Speaking of little league, I was astonished when a Red Sox player tagged up and scored from 2nd on a fly ball to center. I mean they hopefully are embarrassed with those types of results from major league ballplayers.

    Yeah I'm not exactly sure what the fascination is with Reds players? It's not like they're any good??

    Well us Twins fans really need to hope that Kirillof matches Arraez's totals, but I think that is wishful thinking right out of the gate. Kirillof has over 300 AB's and has a .295 OBP and a .694 OPS where as with Arraez high on base and low power numbers still produced an .838 OPS in his first 300 AB's. So Kirillof has some adjustments to make but he has the talent. Lewis won't be available until July so he misses the first 60% of this season at least. That's kind of why I'm thinking the fruits of this trade produces next year. Because guys like Kirillof get more at bats and can figure things out this season.

    Yeah that's what I'm saying. Kirillof, Lewis and Julien aren't going to lead the Twins to the promised land this year. But they are the future of the team, so in a year or so those guys will be leading the the squad hopefully and then this trade looks great if those guys become great. Either way, I feel the twins got more value back than they gave up. But in the short term the Twins are going to struggle to replace Arraez and his on base percentage.

    Honestly, I think the Twins lineup got weaker and to me it's their lineup that is the glaring hole this season, I hope that players like Polanco, Gallo, Kepler, etc.... all have renaissance seasons and this comment looks stupid. But I think the Twins got weaker in the hear and now. But I also feel like, and again I could be wrong, but I feel like the twins fleeced the Marlins on this one. I think Arraez is one of the best pure hitters in baseball, and the twins have no way to replace him and his OB%, no way. But Arraez, asuch as I love him is always battling nagging injuries, (knees), and is a suspect infielder. So to get a starting pitcher and two prospects for him is like a gold mine. But at the same time like I said the Twins have no way to replace him in the lineup. If the Twins were coming off a season like 2019 and the lineup looked stacked, I wouldn't worry a bit, but these guys haven't performed up to their capabilities recently, only Arraez has so it'll hurt the lineup in the very present. Even though I think the Twins did very well on the trade.

    I know I came late to the conversation here, but what I don't get is how we constantly talk about the Twins players and their deficiencies, (Arraez can't field, he has no power, injury prone, etc.... ), but yet we want some other team to trade an MLB starting pitcher for the Twins deficient player?

    I mean why wouldn't it be true that they contacted them? I don't see how that gets made up.

    It's cool that the Twins went all in and got him, he will definitely help in the here and now. I have a couple of concerns. Mainly, the Twins have a bunch of middle infield prospects who are now basically blocked. Lewis, Lee, Martin, etc ..... So these guys may rot in the system because there might not be any opportunities for them. Second, he should be a huge asset for the Twins, say 3 - 4 years down the road the Twins are in last place and put him and a bunch of other guys up for trade at the trade deadline. I'm assuming that the Twins would get lowballed because of all of this nonsense. So I think he won't have big trade value even though he's valuable.

    Looking at his stats, Wacha doesn't even really seem to eat innings. 127 last year, in a good year.

    I mean I get your explanation here, but if that was really the case, wouldn't the good relievers out there have a higher WAR than the good starters? My thinking is that a good starter, like a Verlander, can lock down 6 - 7 innings of a ballgame where a good reliever can only usually lock down 1 inning. Now usually a good starter can do this because he has multiple ways to get guys out, they have 3 - 4 maybe more plus pitches so the hitters are unable to really lock into something. Now if it's true that Duran is incapable of using or developing more than 2 pitches, if he is not good enough to get a solid 3rd or 4th pitch then yeah I guess relief is all that he can do. My thing is why not give him a chance to try, it isn't going to effect the 2 good pitches he has, but if his body incapable of throwing 3 or 4 pitches then leave him where he's at. But if his body and his drive says that he could, then why not give him a chance?

    Has anything been written about that? Because I mean last year was his first as a reliever? No? I think he's started something like 80 games in the minors? It would be interesting if he got a crack at it like next season after all the free agents leave, I mean if he's not good as a starter they can always put him back into the pen. But it would be worth it, I believe to give him a shot at it.

    With those vesting options and guys like Julien, Martin, and Lee knocking at the door. Seems like Polanco should be considered trade bait towards the deadline. I mean seems kinda similar to the corner OF situation with 2B?

    So I know Duran is in the bullpen right now, but has it been made clear that he will never start ever again? Or did they just put him in the bullpen for experience sort of like they did with Johan Santana? Just curious, because obviously his worth becomes a little different if he still has the potential to be a starter?

    I agree, seems like they had less injuries back when they played on the Metrodome carpet/concrete.

    I look at it like this, what good does it do to trade someone with no trade value? So after looking at the trade values I'd trade Kirillof or Larnach. I mean if you trade Larnach then you still have Kirillof; if you trade Kirillof then you still have Larnach. They are worth the most, so then we'd get the most from them?? Kepler is still under contract for this year and next because of an option. So you can go with Gallo, Buck, and Kepler in the OF with Kirillof/Larnach whoever stays splitting time in the OF, 1B, and DH and Gordon also splitting time between the OF and a little INF, and you have Garlick also sitting on the table. Walner and Celestino are both strong depth pieces in AAA than can come up in case of injuries. If they are going to trade someone, might as well trade someone that can actually bring something back??

    But the Phillies, Mets, White Sox, Blue Jays, and to a lesser extent Tigers all come from pretty big markets. If they have such an advantage from the big markets they are in, why have they been so futile? In fact Minnesota is probably more in the middle of the pack than in the bottom of big to small markets in baseball.
