Brooks Lee, Moving to the Saints ,
chpettit19 replied to mrtwinsfan's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Helman plays all over. 3 games each at 2B and 3B this year in St Paul. 1 in LF. 5 at SS. Last year was mostly 2B and CF. He's a true super utility guy for the Saints. Martin has been splitting his time between LF, CF, and 2B this year. 15 games at 2B, 3 each in CF and LF this year. -

Agreed. Very weird that it's not spelled out pretty clearly (as far as lawyer talk goes at least) somewhere in there. Guess we'll just have to wait for Lee to win the ROY aware and find out then! 😀 -
The Breakout Isn't Coming for Carlos Correa

Illegal substance to add to the ball for pitchers?! Although I've heard there's no crying in baseball because there's no crying in baseball. -

I'm choosing to not think about such a possibility. Can only handle so much before I cry. And I hear there's no crying in baseball. -
The Breakout Isn't Coming for Carlos Correa
chpettit19 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
But Correa is the one asking for specific data. He knows what numbers he wants. Popkins doesn't make up the numbers. Correa has built a routine and the numbers he wants over years playing with an even more analytically driven team than the Twins. He tells the coaches what numbers he wants, they don't tell him what numbers he should look at. Almost the entire team is performing to recent career norms. They're simply not very good career norms. Gallo, Farmer, Solano, Kepler (is Popkins now a genius since Kepler is performing great recently?), Castro, Larnach, MAT all within normal range of recent numbers. Jeffers having career year. Julien, Kirilloff, Wallner, Lewis all performing very well as rookies. Correa, Buxton, and Vazquez only 3 guys really having bad years. Just happen to be the 2 most important players are in that group. 3 out of 15 guys sure doesn't scream "coaching is killing this team!" to me. Was apparently washed with the Giants and Mets orgs this year, too, I guess. And the Yankees for multiple years prior. Dang, crazy that the Padres are struggling so much with such a brilliant hitting coach. Turned back the clock on Sanchez while also turning Kim into a star. But destroyed Machado and Bogaerts. We've veered off path a little for the thread topic, though. I don't think Correa breaks out this year, but I don't think coaching has doomed him, nor do I think he's declined overall for his career. I expect him back much closer to a 130 OPS+ next year. With the same coaches or not. But reasonable minds can disagree. -

Are the Front Office's Jobs Secure?
chpettit19 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Their inaction either means they feel comfortable in their job security (would be my bet) or the Pohlads put a governor on them because they're either making or breaking with the team they built. I would move on from the whole regime even though I like what they've done with modernizing the org, and I think they draft pretty well overall. I just don't think they have the needed ability to adjust quickly enough to succeed. They make a plan for the year and hardly change from it at all. And when they try to it turns out like last deadline (I didn't mind the trades at the time, but boy have they turned out bad). Since I do think they draft well I'd like to see Sean Johnson remain as it's my understanding that he basically runs the draft. But Falvine needs to go, in my opinion. I don't think they will, though.- 79 replies

The Breakout Isn't Coming for Carlos Correa
chpettit19 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Don't let your general love of coaching get in the way of the facts. Carlos Correa isn't some rookie. He's not new to obsessing over data. He's fully capable of adjusting before August if it's the info from his coach that's causing problems. My point was Correa is a bad example of your point. Is Jeffers ignoring Popkins or why is he having a career year? -
The Breakout Isn't Coming for Carlos Correa
chpettit19 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He had the same coaches last year and put up his second best season ever. He's been an information junky for years. Carlos is not a good example of the point you're trying to prove. -
The Breakout Isn't Coming for Carlos Correa
chpettit19 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If they're going full rebuild that means Lewis, Kirilloff, Julien, Lee, Wallner, Ryan, Lopez, Ober, Jax, and Duran couldn't form a new core. That'd be quite the disaster. -

chpettit19 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
April- .633 OPS May- .884 June- 1.012 July- .614 August- .776 September- 1.001 July was certainly bad, but August was solidly above average. That doesn't look like decline to me. Especially when you consider his overall OPS+ was the 2nd best of his career. -

chpettit19 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If this is him being "ravaged by the effects of physical aging" this org is in a terrible spot. Having your 2 franchise cornerstones both shy of 30 breaking down physically is a nightmare. If they think that's the situation they need to see if they can sneak their way out of some of the Correa deal by moving him. You can't have a broken down Correa and Buxton on your team. Simply can't do it. I'm not convinced this is Correa breaking down, and expect him to be back closer to normal next year, but if he's breaking down already this org is about to have nearly $50 million going to 2 bench players real soon. -
Twins Top Prospect Brooks Lee Promoted to Triple-A
chpettit19 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Zach Neto has an argument as well. Depending on how you view their respective upsides. He's got 1.6 bWAR and a 99 OPS+ in 66 MLB games while playing a more than reasonable SS. Only question is how much more there is in his bat. Lee is doing just about everything we could've hoped for, though! And if Jenkins can be this year's Holiday I'm going to be quite thrilled. -
A ball this year, and end at AA next year and we're really onto something! I'd be awfully happy if he follows the Jackson Holliday path in his first year and a half as a pro.

I have no idea if they can beat Cleveland "when it matters" this year, but that's a weird narrative in general. They certainly couldn't beat them last year, but they were 11-8 against them in 2021. Including going 6-4 against them in the second half. They're 3-4 against them this year in 7 incredibly close games. Completely collapsing against them last year has nothing to do with how they'll play them down the stretch this year.

@Jocko87 and @FlyingFinn I couldn't find the exact answer in the CBA. Only real talk of the Rule 4 draft is centered around qualifying offers, and the international free agent signing pools. The talk about the ROY voting just explained that anyone placing first or second automatically receives a full year of service time. -
Twins should act quickly and sign Trey Mancini and dfa Joey Gallo.
chpettit19 commented on tarheeltwinsfan's blog entry in Blog tarheeltwinsfan
I'm with @LA VIkes Fan. I'm all for moving on from Gallo, but Mancini isn't the answer. His defense is significantly worse. He can't play OF. He has an 11th percentile sprint speed this year. For reference, Vazquez is 9th percentile. Could you imagine Vazquez trying to track down a fly ball? He belongs nowhere near an OF. Trey is an absolute class act, and seems like a wonderful dude. But he can't cut it in major league baseball anymore. No thanks on bringing him in. -
Is Byron Buxton Turning into Giancarlo Stanton?
chpettit19 replied to Hans Birkeland's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Molitor managed Buxton for 4 years. How long was it going to take for him to turn him into Puckett? Buxton was pulling the ball 45% of the time by the time Molitor left. If Molitor didn't have him doing all those things after 4 seasons I'm not sure why we'd think he'd do it over the next 4. Was Molitor going to go Mr Miyagi on him and magically heal his knees, or stop him from getting hurt in the first place? -

I believe he can only create 1 pick. There was a possibility of 3 had they added an international draft, but since they didn't it's just the 1. I believe anyone who was promoted early enough to qualify for the ROY bonus pick can earn a pick over the next 2 seasons (if they don't earn it for ROY) by finishing top 3 in Cy Young or MVP voting in their first 3 years. Even more motivation to make sure your elite guys are up and qualify! -

https://www.mlb.com/news/draft-rule-changes-with-new-cba That article from sporting news has some inaccuracies (there's no international draft). Really weird considering it was just written this spring and we already knew there was no international draft like he talks about. My understanding, and according to the MLB.com article, is they have to be on the opening day roster, and be top 100 prospects to qualify. But the criteria is different in a number of different articles so I'm going to dig up the CBA and take a look. Will report back soon! -

I really hope the draft pick incentive leads them to have him up, but I really doubt we see him on opening day which means he wouldn't be eligible for the compensation anyways. I'd guess we see him at some point next year, but doubt it's opening day. I really hope I'm wrong (assuming he does well in AAA and Spring Training). -
Weird thing is that he is missing bats. His K rate sky rocketed in July. Since his shutout (so the stretch where he's been brutal) he has 52 Ks in 32.1 innings. For comparison he had 36 Ks in 32 April innings. 40 in 33 innings in May. 29 in 31.2 innings in June. He's missing bats and getting Ks at his best rate of the season. But when they hit it they crush it now.

FYI, they haven't played Martin at SS this year. I think that experiment is finally over. They've had him at 2B, CF, and LF. I'd bet Lee takes over as the fulltime SS in St Paul now. I don't expect to see Lee in a Twins uni this year, but he'd be a September callup for me if he does well in St Paul for a month. He's going to be eligible for the draft pick compensation attached to rookie of the year voting next year, but you have to have him on your opening day roster for that (if I'm remembering that rule correctly). I'd like to get him a little exposure in September so he knows what adjustments he has to make and can work on them in the offseason/spring training to hopefully hit the ground running in Minneapolis starting opening day. Don't expect this to be the Twins plan right now, but it'd be mine. -

Twins Minor League Hitter of the Month: July 2023
chpettit19 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
4th OFer feels like his ceiling, but he also makes me think of Terrance Gore from those KC WS teams. If you have room to stash him on your 40-man for the year you can use him as a base running threat in the postseason. Not suggesting the Twins force that kind of thing with the 40-man, or that he hopefully doesn't get a crack at the 4th OFer job next year, but true base stealers can get themselves a ring without really ever having a major league career since playoff lineups usual shorten (although this regime probably wouldn't want to shorten their PH options in the playoffs).- 19 replies
