    I'll be pretty surprised if they go 15 bats in September with a clearly tiring pitching staff. Especially if they're able to give themselves a big cushion early in the month. Resting some arms, and getting them lined up for the playoffs, would be a lot easier with 14 arms.

    I'm not rushing to judgement. I haven't said he should be suspended or anything. I have no idea what the facts are, or how old she was/is. But he's going to get the biggest suspension in MLB history if it's found that he was sleeping with a 14 year old. The league won't care what documentation there was. The league won't care about anything. If they find out one of their players was sleeping with a 14 year old they're going to absolutely bury them. It is that simple. Now I have no idea if that is the actual fact of the situation, and I'm going to let all the info come out before I judge Wander. But if the allegations are true he's not seeing an MLB game for a very long time.

    Yeah, I disagree whole heartedly. The age of 18 is absolutely the tipping point on the scale in this case. Maybe the DR justice system is different, but MLB is not going to accept "I didn't know she was 14." They don't care about blackmail schemes, whether she tried it on other players, or how old she "portrayed herself" as. The communication doesn't matter. Don't get ensnared by 14 year olds. You're a multimillionaire professional athlete with every resource possible at your disposal for finding out the age of anyone, and are warned about being a likely target of blackmail schemes. The league won't care 1 bit if he claims he didn't know. The "I didn't know" excuse is used all the time. And never works. MLB won't care. If she was 14 Franco is getting the longest suspension the league can give him. They're not taking the PR hit because he says he didn't know.

    Oh, all sorts of unknowns still for sure. My thing with the "moral deviance" thing is that it comes down to the same thing as a criminal investigation. Either she was 18 or she wasn't. I think MLB would have a very hard time getting a suspension through if she was 18 and he didn't do anything illegal. I don't think there's any precedence for that. The ones where there's no criminal charges, but the guy is still suspended, are over violence and the league basically says that their required level of evidence is different than a court's. That's a lot harder explanation to give when it comes to someone's age. That isn't he said/she said. That's simply a fact. Her age is her age so I don't see how they would get away with suspending him if she was/is 18.

    Thanks! That certainly does make things a little different I'd think. But then immigration things could be at play, but I'm no immigration specialist. Certainly complicates things I'd think.

    I guess my stance on it is that I'd hope it's an all or nothing situation, and that comes down to a criminal investigation. Either she was/is 18 or she wasn't/isn't. If she was/is 18 MLB likely has nothing to suspend him for and he'll be back after this road trip. Or she wasn't/isn't 18, and then he's committed a crime and should be in prison. I don't see a violation of their domestic violence, child abuse, etc. agreement if he was sleeping with an 18 year old. So, based on my understanding of everything (which is admittedly very little on this specific case as, like you said, it just came out yesterday) this is either a crime or he'll be back when it's determined he didn't commit a crime. Although, I guess I don't know the details and whether or not these things allegedly happened in America. That could certainly change a criminal investigation while not effecting the MLB investigation. Although that should effect his immigration status (I believe he's still a Dominican citizen, and not US, but could be wrong) so then we'd be back to the original all or nothing answer.

    Has the legal system gotten involved yet? I'd think that's the only way we've seen the end of him in MLB.

    Why do you think he can judge a pop fly? Not everybody can. The Twins have tried him at other spots. I know it's popular to just assume they're completely incompetent so they're making a clearly wrong decision, but multiple coaches have seen him play these other spots. I don't like him at 2B either, but he's the 1 guy they aren't playing all over after having tried it. Isn't it at least plausible that the reason they aren't doing with him what they did with Arraez is because they've seen him at these other spots and it's even worse than him at 2B?

    And LFers also field grounders. But those certainly aren't the skills you're looking to develop at those positions. If a 2B is fielding a fly ball there's a very good chance that at least 1 of 5 other players on the field (P, 1B, SS, CF, RF) can also get to that ball. And the balls in the air a 2B is fielding are very different than what a LF is fielding. I have no idea what you're trying to suggest here.

    I'd have left Gray in for 1 more. I do think it makes sense to get the rotation a little extra rest here and there for the stretch run, but they also need to get the pen some rest. Jax and Duran have been awfully wobbly lately. I know they have a number of off days coming up, but those 2 look to be in need of a reset of some sort. Come playoff time they're going to need them available to throw in basically every close game so they need them well rested then, but they also need to get them used to throwing up to 3 days in a row. It's a balancing act as it's also going to be vital to have the starters with as strong of arms as possible to get 6 or 7 innings out of them in every start. Will be interesting to see how they manage the pitching staff from here on out. I'm not going to freak out over 1 start where I'd have left Gray in an extra inning than they did as I can see a number of legitimate reasons to have done so.

    I think the spirit of this list is high minors/current Twins roster type guys. The immediate future over just a prospect ranking type situation.

    I think I've been pretty clear that I disliked the Keuchel experiment from the jump, but I won't be convinced it's done until he's officially off the roster. I wouldn't at all be surprised to find out that Ober has a very similar groin issue to Ryan that he didn't tell the team about that happened just before he started to struggle. And with the off days they have coming up it's pretty easy to shift Keuchel to Ober's rotation spot when Ryan comes off the IL (hopefully this week). This FO loves it's washed up vets, so I'll believe Keuchel is done when they actually cut him.

    I'm not blind. Does Rocco discuss players with the FO? Of course he does. But the FO doesn't need Rocco to tell them who's available and who's not. He absolutely is not telling them who to call up and send down and IL. That is factually incorrect on how things work. I promise you. The medical people tell them all who's available, who's not, and how long the injuries are likely to be a problem. FYI, Solano just hit so I'm pretty sure they're not short 2 guys.

    I think he's better than a 98 OPS+ hitter so I wouldn't view it as "dumping" him on another team. But if you think he maxes out as Delmon Young then I understand that stance.

    FYI, Rocco doesn't put anyone on the IL. It's not his job.

    I don't know if he can read a fly ball. If he can't and he's turning flyouts into doubles I'm not sure LF is the better choice. I have to assume he was brutal in LF if they haven't tried him there again. They put Arraez out there, and move guys around like crazy. Him being the 1 guy they aren't willing to move around says they think 2B is his only shot at having a position. And I agree, it doesn't look like he has a position. But if he can hit like they hope I'd keep him as the primary DH who can fill in at 2B a couple times a week.

    You still need good hands, and feet, to play 1B. Those are things Julien doesn't have. As others have said, he doesn't at all look like he'd be a good candidate for saving poor throws from his IF teammates. I read him playing 181 innings at 1B in the minors, and likely the 119.2 in LF as well, and them seeming to have no intention of putting him back at those spots, as it being pretty clear that he's worse in those spots than at 2B. Which is entirely possible. I don't want to see him try to work his feet on a throw up the line the way he'd have to to try to stretch for a miss-thrown ball, and then also have to pick that throw out of the dirt with his hands. There's nothing at all with the way he moves, and how his hands work, that suggest he could handle 1B. With the IF logjam we hope (<-still a really important word here) is coming, I'd think LF and CF are the open spots (assuming Wallner is first in line to take long-term RF duties at this point) most up for grabs right now. I'd think getting Julien and/or Lewis an offseason of OF work is the better move than figuring out how to fit them all on the IF. Edited to add: I also don't understand the calls for trading Julien. This team has no business trading young, controllable bats that are better than basically all of their short-term vets. Trade a young bat with 5 or 6 years of control left for a bullpen arm?! Come on now. This team needs so much offense, but people want to trade Julien? I don't get it.

    Disagree. They need extra arms right now. The pen is being overworked, and Ober is already at his career high in innings pitched. When is Ryan going to be back? If Keuchel is in this rotation for much longer the pen is going to be shot. If you option someone down they're back in AAA for basically half the month automatically so you're only able to do it with a couple guys. And they don't really have that many guys to cycle in the first place. And they already platoon, pinch hit, and mix up the lineup enough. They don't need 15 bats. You don't have to platoon 7 lineup spots. Arms are far more important right now.

    They can all hit flyballs, yes. But league average for driving in the runner from 3rd with less than 2 outs is 50.4%. The Twins currently have a 47.3% success rate in that situation. I'd argue that this lineup is at least 3% worse than average. So they're succeeding at their talent level. Fans make it sound like these guys should be succeeding near 100% at this. The guys on the mound get paid, too. It's not that easy to just hit a fly ball and score the run. We can be as disappointed as we want with the Twins, but the rest of the league is only succeeding 50% of the time anyways. It's not that easy. And I don't agree that they teach every hitter to swing for the fences every at bat regardless of the situation. I think that's a dramatic exaggeration fans use because they're frustrated. Jeffers isn't doing that. Vazquez isn't. Farmer isn't. Julien isn't. Polanco isn't. Solano definitely isn't. Castro isn't. Kepler isn't. Luplow isn't. That's 9 guys on the current roster that aren't doing that at all. Lewis and Kirilloff don't do it. Larnach doesn't do it. Not Miranda style (although he got a little power happy this year I think). I get that we have a need to blame someone, and look for reasons why things aren't happening. As fans we also want to have faith that are team can be good (otherwise why cheer for them?). But the reality of the situation is that many of these hitters simply aren't that good. Not every strike out, or failed AB is because they're trying to hit HRs. League average pull rate is 38.7%. Twins are at 39.7%. They aren't trying to pull and launch everything. Not that it'd be terrible if they were as the Braves are currently at 41.1% and I think we'd all be ok with this team having a Braves type offense. League average oppo rate is 24.9%. Twins are at 24.7%. All stats according to Baseball Savant, btw. They aren't doing anything crazy. They're just not very good (compared to other major league lineups) at hitting the ball well. And many of us voiced concerns about that coming into the season. When you add the 2 guys everyone was counting on having abysmal seasons it accounts for all these numbers easily.

    I don't know what this has to do with what I said. Is your belief that the Saints just randomly started playing Royce Lewis in CF last year when he was sent back down? Do you believe they randomly started playing him at 3B this year? Do you believe they are randomly playing Martin in CF, LF, and 2B? These decisions are made by the Twins organization. There is no debating that. The Saints obviously want to win, why wouldn't they? But the discussion was about Garlick playing 1B instead of Larnach. Your argument was that it was the Saints making that decision on their own because they felt Garlick was the better player. You are wrong. That is not how those decisions are made. The Twins FO tells the Saints, and all their minor league affiliates, where to play prospects. The coaches in the minor leagues are Twins employees. Gardenhire was assigned to the Saints by the Twins. Those coaches provide feedback, and suggestions, to the Twins FO, but the Twins FO is the one who tells them where to play guys.

    To me, they're just a severely flawed lineup that lacks the skills necessary to succeed on a regular basis. I don't think it's shocking to anyone that a number of these guys strike out often, or aren't everyday players. Not sure why we'd then be shocked that they strike out often with guys on 3rd and less than 2 outs, or aren't able to drive in runs at a high rate. They're not a good lineup. Especially when Kirilloff and Lewis are hurt, Buxton and Correa are having horrid years, and Polanco has been in and out of the lineup. Are we surprised they're not a great offensive team when Castro, Solano, Taylor, Gallo, and Farmer are all in their top 8 in PAs this year? That's a lot of part time players getting fulltime run. Of course they're inconsistent. They're worst in the league at getting guys to 3rd with less than 2 outs in the first place. If they can't even get guys there why are we surprised they're not good when they finally do? To me, they're just a bad lineup. So, as the argument against clutch hitting would say, they're bad in clutch situations as well. Bad hitters hitting bad in clutch situations shouldn't be surprising.

    The argument against "clutch hitting" isn't that everyone would perform the same with a large enough sample size, it's that they perform to their "non-clutch" norms. Basically guys who are good without runners on are still good with them on (assuming a large enough sample size). The Twins just don't have a very talented lineup. Especially when Correa and Buxton are this bad. The Astros hit a grand slam to beat Bautista. The game they beat him they went Singleton Walk-Altuve Pulled Single (soft contact, though)- Bregman Strike Out- Alvarez Missile up the middle-Tucker pulled grand slam- Diaz strike out. So 2 of the 3 balls in play were pulled, including 1 for a home run, and the other one went up the middle at 102 MPH. That isn't going to the opposite field and not pulling. They pulled the ball, struck out, but hit a homer. Pretty much exactly what people complain about the Twins doing.

    He's done it once (July 14, 15, 16). But, yeah, he wasn't going to pitch in every game of that series. He hadn't pitched in nearly a week. Just needed to get an inning.
