  1. If the team is evaluating talent moving forward, I would have much rather seen Astudillo sent to AAA as I don't feel he has a future with this team.
  2. I would go after Syndergaard, but I think the Mets will re-sign him. The other 4 are going to be out of the teams price range, but offers should still be extended. The only guys signing for two years are older vets, and they would more than likely look at a team that is for sure contending over those two years. I see the Twins signing the likes of Steven Matz, Zach Davies, Alex Cobb, Brett Anderson or Tyler Anderson.
  3. Shoot for the moon. Berrios is looking to get paid as #1 or #2 when he's really a #3. Ask a high price and stick to it. If another team really wants him, they'll pony up.
  4. How about something outside the box, maybe 3/$66M with performance incentives to trigger each successive year. They just have to agree on the number of years. And maybe after year 5 there could be an opt-out so he can try FA again at age 34. He gets paid handsomely and if he manages to stay healthy and/or perform on the field gets long-term security ($$$). Don't know if the MLBPA would go for a deal like this but I think it could work well for both sides.
  5. My lip reading skills may need help, but Donaldson appears to ask Arraez what he was looking at. Similar to what you ask a 9 year old playing Cal Ripken level who sees his younger sibling eating ice cream and would rather be doing that than standing at second base waiting for the play to start. These guys heads need to be in the game at all times, case in point the Mets yesterday arguing about a fair ball call while 3 runs scored. There have been many other cases of MLB players looking lost or not ready to make a play this season. There are more aspects to this game than just hitting. Lost season or not, I will side with the veteran here.
  6. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/07/twins-reportedly-disinclined-to-trade-players-controllable-beyond-2021.html
  7. How is Donaldson not earning his playing time? Of qualified 3B, he has the 5th highest OPS, 3rd highest ISO, 3rd best AB/HR, 3rd best BB/K, 2nd BB% and 7th best SO%. I think his numbers have earned him his playing time.
  8. Donaldson may or may not be tradeable because of his contract and injury concerns, but I would wait until the off-season to look into trading him. He is currently sidelined with a nagging injury and that will be fresh on teams minds when discussing returns. What I would look into doing is something like this; Trade Simmons, he is a plus defender and should bring a decent prospect. An infield of Kirilloff, Arraez, Polanco and Donaldson would be in place for the rest of the year. IF Miranda continues his hot AAA start, bring him up to be the utility guy, he has played all infield positions in the minors this year. Keep Gordon up as another utility guy, he has played passable defense at 2B & CF. A Cruz trade or Sano trade/release are subjects for another topic.
  9. This..... the Twins likely need to go at least 10-4
  10. I guess it sounds that way, but no. I would like see players and coaches be more aggressive, especially early in the game. Keep the defense on their toes, make them make plays. I am not a fan of station to station baseball or coasting into a base anticipating that the play is over. Run hard, anticipate the bad throw or missed catch. I couldn't tell by the replay how hard Larnach rounded third, or if he even did until the ball deflected off of Arraez. I am just saying he needs to run hard and both he and Diaz need to anticipate the bad throw/missed catch.
  11. Normally I would say no as players are usually caught up in the moment, but after watching the replay I would agree. However, Larnach needs to recognize what's going on also and anticipate a bad throw. I couldn't tell by the replay I saw if he rounded the base hard or if he pulled up thinking the play was over. It looked like he was about 1/3 of the way home and Diaz put up the stop sign. I understand it was the 1st inning, but you gotta make Cleveland make a play there. I will gladly take "hustle" outs when trying to spark a rally.
  12. I don't think keeping Eddie around for another year would have helped this team, and I am a Rosario fan. Larnach and Kirilloff are getting valuable repetitions because of his absence and this should help going forward. And plays like last nights play at second would have been all to common.
  13. Looking back at last winters FA relievers, there aren't very many pitching very well and there are quite a few out for the season or who have missed big chunks of time. FA is crapshoot at best, especially with pitching. Nobody saw this big of a fall off from Maeda, though he has time to turn it around, or Pineda getting hurt. Happ is a bit of a disappointment, but not much was expected of Shoemaker, who may have found a spot in the BP. Sano's fall off is also highly disappointing, as are the injuries to just about everyone. I believe Simmons was originally signed as a bridge to Lewis, but things happen. I like one year of Simmons, not sure if I like two. To put this year completely on the front office is unjust, only so many players can be signed/traded for. The personnel on the field has to perform.
  14. Twins won 2 WS with Dazzle Man Dan Gladden in LF..... And if you go back in time HOF Goose Goslin manned LF for the Senators.
  15. With Buxton and Kepler due back and Gordon showing (so far) he can handle MLB pitching, and Garver due back in July, I would for sure entertain offers for Cruz and Simmons. I don't think Sano will draw any interest, but DFAing him should also be considered. The everyday line-up could look something like this: C - Jeffers, 1B - Kirilloff, 2B - Arraez, SS - Polanco, 3B - Donaldson, LF - Larnach, CF - Buxton, RF - Kepler, DH - Garver. Bench players would be Gordon, Astudillo, Refsnyder, and take your pick of Garlick/Rooker/Riddle or whoever may have been acquired in one of the trades.
  16. Until he does and they don't.....
  17. Donaldson's was supposed to make $18.75M last year, divide that by 2.7 (60 game season) and you get $6.94M. Fangraphs shows his 2020 season to be worth $6.9M. He is to make $21.75M this year, divide that by 2.7 (59 games this year, basically the same as last year) and you get $8.05M. Fangraphs shows his 2021 season to be worth $7.4M so far. Whether people want to admit it or not, he is not grossly underperforming what he is being paid (according to Fangraphs). Maybe these so-called stat driven people on here are judging him by the old-fashioned eye test, shame on them!!
  18. The same team that gave up on David Ortiz is holding onto a guy (Sano) in hopes that he becomes the next David Ortiz..... Please cut ties with him now, it is not going to happen here. 15-20 games of superstar stats do not offset 120-140 games of K's and pop-outs.
  19. Beat the O's with what used to be there creed; pitching, defense and the three-run homer....
  20. There was discussion on today's game thread about rules changes to try to improve our favorite sport, some for, some against. I would like to hear people's ideas on the subject and the reasoning for their decisions.
  21. Am unable to watch the games at home(thanks FSN/BSN), but do check the highlights. I did catch a couple innings last night after watching the local high school team play and, to me anyway, there were a couple things missed amongst the hubbub of complaints about Berrios, Donaldson and Simmons seasons. Berrios didn't look bad, the Simmons error really hurt. His stuff looks good, almost too good. His fastball had big movement and his breaking stuff had bigger movement, but the hitters weren't chasing. Simmons, despite the error, made a nice block of the base resulting in a pick-off and is always in position ready to make the play. Donaldson struggles, but went oppo for the sac fly, something the rest of the team seems unwilling (unable) to do. Yes, there are no excuses at this level for dropped catches (Simmons and Donaldson), but I feel some of the negativity leveled at these players in mostly unwarranted. Nobody bats or fields 1.000 or had an ERA of 0.00.
  22. I think Berrios is going to find himself sadly disappointed in the actual market he thinks is waiting for him. However, I don't think this helps the Twins. Some team will offer $1 - $2 million more to have him as a third starter then the Twins will be able to offer to bring him back.
  23. So evidently you like Dobnak, Thorpe, Ober, and whoever else gets brought up to toss innings this year! Berrios and Maeda are the only starting pitchers coming back next year, unless Dobnak and Thorpe figure it out at the MLB level. Berrios will not bring back an MLB ready pitcher, nor will Buxton, Maeda or anyone else on this roster. And if you blow up the roster, no FA's will sign here; Simmons, Pineda, Cruz, Happ, Shoemaker, Robles, and probably Colome....all gone after this year. Pretty big turnover already and you want to add one more starting pitcher to the shopping list....
  24. My issue was with the fact that he stood there for a second admiring it, like he just took Aroldis Chapman or Josh Hader deep. He should have just put his head down and run. It was basically a BP HR, not the game winner in the bottom of the 9th of Game 7 of the WS... Contracts are performance driven, you have to get results to get paid. Don't like the result, perform better. Also, that hit could help him win the batting title at the end of the season, resulting in more $$$, whereas it won't hurt Astudillo in contract negotiations.
