  1. Does the logic in the article for trading Polo, also apply to why the Twins should trade Kepler? 1) Kep's health is better than Polo's, 2) Kep's fielding is better, although it is not at a highly valued position, 3) Kep does not seem to have put team first in some decisions I have read about ("I don't want to play CF" and "I can't go with the team to play in Canada because I'm not vaccinated" and "Wandering in Europe to get away from baseball".) OK I admit the last point of "wandering in Europe" is a weak point of mine, but I contend there was more to Kep's decision to "wander" than we will ever know. 4) Most importantly, the Twins are not loaded with young, major league outfielders, ready to take Kep's place, whereas there are Lewis, Julien, C-4, Farmer and Lee...all needing an IF position. For me the 4th point is the main reason why the Twins should have traded Polo and should not trade Kep, unless it was for a much better deal than they got for Polo. (The Orioles sure improved their already good team for 2024 with the Corbin Burns trade yesterday...and gave up very little).
  2. Severino had displayed flashes of huge power at Elizabethton, when he first started with the Twins. In fact, the Elizabethton Twins' GM made it a point to show me an outfield light pole, over which Severino had hit a monster homerun.
  3. Caterino and Staumont are my choices also. I do like the strength of the Twin's relievers going into 2024.
  4. Great article Nick. I enjoyed reading it so much that I am going to vote for it to be the "Article of the Year" , so far, for 2024. I don't know of a statistic which measures a catcher's value to a pitching staff by calling pitches and by encouragement or getting in a pitcher's face when necessary, during a game. The pitchers need to trust their catchers. Leadership is an important quality in a catcher. So is knowledge and so is work ethic. It appears to me that Mauer, Castro and Vasquez possess these qualities. It is hard to come into an organization, or join an established team, and quickly become a leader. A catcher needs to be a leader for the pitching staff.
  5. Any agent who can get $11 million for Gallo in 2023 and then get $5 million for him in 2024 is who I want for my son's agent.
  6. Specifically what did 3 things Rocco say that would be the most interesting to us at TD?
  7. Boras has a duty to represent his clients. Period. The most any GM can hope to gain from Boras, or any agent, is accessibility and trust. A man's word is his bond. Hopefully Boras and Falvine have that type of relationship.
  8. Fun and interesting read, Seth. I like to play the what if game. However, that is what GM's do every day. It's a tough job to predict the future. I do like the caution with which Falvey and Levine operate.
  9. Miller has exceptionally soft hands and just looks so smooth going from fielding a baseball to throwing it on a straight line to 1B.
  10. If Duran were a starter, he would pitch every 5th day, no matter the score. Many of his starts, maybe half, therefore, would be in low leverage situations. Whereas the vast majority of his "closer" relief innings would be in high leverage situations, with the game on the line. Using Duran's "limited innings" in low level situations is a waste of his arm usage. Psychologically it gives the Twins' player a lift to know that Duran will win the game when the Twins have the lead. Why was Mariano Rivera never made a starter by the Yankees? Because he was too valuable as a closer to run the risk of messing things up by changing him to a starter. You may say, "What about Santana?" I would answer that by saying that Santana was never one of the 2 or 3 best closers in the game, before the Twins moved him to starter. Tell me how I'm wrong.
  11. Remember the Twins had the easiest schedule in the majors the second half of the season last year. So naturally many of the individual stats of the Twins improved the second half of 2023, since the Twins played against inferior opponents for the second half of 2023.
  12. Thanks. I'm planning on arriving at Ft. Myers on Thursday the 7th of March, wandering around the practice fields and Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Friday, seeing the Yankees on Saturday and the Nationals on Sunday. I have a young friend, Zack Brzykcy, who is from near my hometown. His mom is a friend of mine. Zack just made the Nationals 40 man roster as a RP. I'd like to say hello to him, but there is no guarantee he will make the trip to Ft. Myers for that game. We'll have to return to North Carolina Monday.
  13. I am curious. Please explain why you feel that the proposed trade of Polo and E. Rod for one of the 3 pitchers mentions, guarantees 2nd place in the AL Central for 2024 for the Twinkies. Thanks. I always enjoy your posts, but this one surprised me.
  14. This core of the Twins farm system looks really good to me. However, the Twins farm system is only rated 22nd by Bleacher Reports, and the Twins are not mentioned in the Jonathan Mayo survey of the MLB executives ranking of the top farm systems from 6 days ago. I'll report back after my annual March trip to Ft. Myers. Hope to see some of you TD writers and readers there.
  15. Keep both Lee and Julien. They both can be useful, productive 2B, 1B, 3B (Lee, not Julien at 3B). Kirilloff is questionable at 1B due to injuries. Polo is worth every penny of his contract. But if the right offer comes along for Polo, take it. Stretch out the most promising AAA prospect pitchers. Keep juggling the AAA pitchers in the 5th /6th rotation spot until one (Varland, Raya, Caterino, Lewis, Festa) proves himself superior to the other 4 and then use that one as 5th SP while the others continue to improve at AAA. And hope no one gets injured.
  16. Oh good grief. I didn't know that. Thanks.
  17. Send these stats to all the HOF voters who have not voted yet. Great article Cody. Thank you.
  18. Since the Twins had the easiest schedule of any team the second half of the 2023 season and one of the most difficult schedules during the first half of the 2023 season, possibly Kep was doing better against weaker opponents, as did the majority of the Twins team.
  19. I wrote him and got an autographed picture back when he was playing. Several years later, out of the blue, I received a Christmas card from him. That was nice of him.
  20. The Twins have created quite the conundrum for 2024. How to get a playoff, quality starting pitcher. without paying big money for a FA and without trading any "fan favorites"? Friends, it can't be done in 2024. The logical choice for us fans, who wrongly assume that the owners "just want to win games" and "who do not care about the profit margins", is to sign a FA stud pitcher and hope he is not a flop. Or don't trade away the promising starting pitchers they do have. The Twins previously had the #2/3 SP they needed in Jose Berrios. Let's look back at the Jose Berrios trade for just a minute. Berrios would have been a perfect fit for 2023 and 2024 and beyond. Instead, the Twins have Austin Martin and SWR. Turns out that was a very bad trade for the Twins. Sonny Gray, Pablo Lopez and Jose Berrios would have been quite impressive as the first three starting pitchers for the Twins this past year. And for 2024 the starting duo of Lopez and Berrios would have been awesome. Sometimes the best trade, is no trade at all.
  21. I wonder how much weight is being placed on a prospect's mental make-up and attitude? I believe there is a correlation in attitude and being successful in one's goals. However, if I recall my mental make-up, as an 18 to 22 year old , it was nothing to be proud of. Sure, I graduated from college during those 4 years, but I did just enough to get by. I finally grew up in the US Army, 1967 - 1969. It was there I learned to be more than "just good enough".
