  1. Mike i was about to post the same thing. Lessons learned. One, draft a starting pitcher instead of a relief pitcher (if you want a starting pitcher). Don't try and ram a square peg into a round hole, almost never works out. Two, All drafts are a crapshoot regardless of whether its a pitcher or a position player. Three. There's absolutely nothing wrong with drafting "what you need" as long as it makes sense and you aren't passing up a top talent at another position. Understand your immediate deficiencies, what you have in abundance already and then decide. Now some live and die by the phrase "draft the best player available regardless", but this does little to help a franchise so devoid of pitching talent. Drafting "toolsey infielders" and outfielders destined to be DH's that are YEARS and YEARS away from helping the major league squad at this stage of a rebuild is just crazy. Especially when there were plenty of good college starters available and high draft picks.
  2. It would be nice to see them called up to AAA sooner rather than later. Although with Romero that may happen next year.
  3. Why don't they move him closer to the plate? I mean he's got 10-12 inches from his toes to the edge of the batters box.
  4. So a plus curveball, 91-94 mph fastball (prior to spring 2017) and a seldom used change. Several draft forums have documented a significant decline in FB velocity, down from 94 to low 90's and bottoming out in the upper 80's. This is one of the reasons he fell out of the 1st round and into the hands of the Twins. Reminds me of Tyler Duffey (a two pitch reliever).
  5. By the time either one of these guys (Enlow or Leach) make it to the majors it won't matter as the current offensive core will be departing via free agency.
  6. Given that Romero, Gonsalves and Jorge have not pitched above the AA level makes any chance of a fall callup unlikely. If they had started the year at AAA the situation would be different.
  7. They may not have said it but several of these guys were college guys so the expectation is that they will move faster to the majors than high school draftees. They also can't hide behind the injury bug forever.
  8. Agreed. That said I would not offer him an extension come 2020 if he continues like this. Hopefully by then they have better options.
  9. mmmm.....that's debatable. I guess the question is whether or not the guy will stay healthy. He's had neck and forearm issues for a season and a half. If he can't stay healthy and return to 2015 numbers then yeah he's not worth Sano. That said the A's aren't going to give him away not when you have the Cubs and Yankees driving up the price for coveted starting pitching.
  10. It's all a moot discussion anyways. No-way the A's give up Gray. That is a pie in the sky acquisition by this team unless they were willing to give up Sano and one other piece. Every team the Twins try and approach about a quality starter is probably going to ask for Sano point blank. Buxton is not really on the radar anymore given his atrocious major league numbers so far. What else is left as trade bate? Dozier, Kepler, Santana, Polanco? Everyone is convinced that Dozier is not tradable, that Kepler is too inexperienced, that Santana is too old and Polanco is playing out of position. If that's all true there's not enough pieces to pry away a good starter from another franchise without blowing up the rebuild. I've said it before and i'll say it again. This situation is looking more and more like the early 2000's Rangers. A team that had all the hitting in the world but virtually no pitching. By the time the pitching started to arrive their hitting core had started to break up. Hate to say it, but the Twins should have drafted a couple of college arms early in the draft this year at #1 and #35 instead of a toolsey shortstop and outfielder who looks destined to DH. Just my opinion.
  11. Certainly a good problem to have. I like what I've seen from Berrios so far and in the future (if he keeps this up) he's unquestionably the #1 starter in a playoff series in my book. Right now though you go with experience and the calm cool nature of Santana in that first start, unless of course this downward trend continues. Then you might have to rethink things. Just illustrates the fact that Falvey and Levine need to go out and acquire a legitimate #3 starter. Santiago, Hughes and Gibson are much too wild and inconsistent to be dependable #3's. Perhaps May factors back into this equation next season along with Meija, but that's blind hope at this point.
  12. So judging by the comments on this forum the only trade able (not saying we should) assets for pitching are Dozier, Santana, Buxton, Sano and Kepler. Oh wait, the market is so narrow that Dozier is really untradeable because he's a 2b, nobody will give us anything for Santana because he's 34 and was suspended a few years back for PEds and is in the second to last year of his deal, Buxton has not taken off yet, and Kepler is still relatively raw. The rest of the roster is full of garbage players and prospects not worthy of being trade for a major league starter and the front office won't draft a college level starter with the first or supplementary picks. Man we are in a pickle here aren't we?
  13. How is the thought of trading Dozier (has several guys behind him that can play 2nd or short) or Santana (free agent after next season possibly) "pie-in-the-sky"? I get that there might be limited options in trading either one but "pie-in-the-sky"? come-onnnn
  14. I get what you are saying, but when an organization is so deficient in one area at all levels you SHOULD have that at the top of your wish list of drafting priorities. I'm not saying every pick should be a college level starting pitcher, but it should have been the first couple of picks in my opinion in this years draft because there were plenty of good options available worthy of top 5 picks. No amount of spin can make Lewis a consensus 1:1 pick (which he's not).
  15. You gotta give up something to get something. Who are they going to give up to get a quality third starter and a couple of relief pitchers? It will come at a premium cost too as we are inching up on the all-star break. No. This team is not there yet. Not without giving up Dozier and other pieces and that may still not be enough.
  16. They better MacGyver the rotation and bullpen this offseason as well because they used their top two picks on a toolsey SS with a questionable bat and an OF who will likely end up as a DH. Their third and fourth round picks are pitchers but both high school age. No help there.
  17. Completely disagree. Overused cliche. As has been proven the last couple of games against the Indians and all of last season the Twins DESPERATELY need pitching, pitching AND MORE PITCHING. Drafting Lewis does nothing for this organization for the next 4 to 5 years and by then Sano, Kepler, Buxton, Berrios, etc. are all hitting free agency and knowing this organization they are not going to keep this core together. Sorry, I just can't agree. Should have gone with a college arm with the #1 pick and supplementary pick as well. I could have accepted rolling the dice on Greene because of the potential upside too.
  18. Excuse me? You better take a long look in the mirror and read up before telling someone to be smarter! Yes the Twins did want McKay at 1:1, that was there first preference. Now you may not like that and it seems to have your knickers in a twist, but i've read multiple reports including one on baseball America stating as such. Yes, they wanted him badly at 1:1 but were not willing to pay him slot. Don't like the message, don't read my post, but it is true like it or not Alarp. The rest of your post is pointless. I don't care what they are trying to save in later picks by paying under slot with the 1st pick. At 1:1 that is not the pick to be skimping on in order save money for later signings.
  19. Your opinion is not valid because the site owner says so ....so there!
  20. They refused to pay McKay slot and that was THE GUY they wanted.
  21. True, but the wrong ones. They drafted a reliever and attempted to turn him into a starter. The other is a type one diabetic (big red flag for any athlete) and to be honest Stewart was over hyped and never lived up to the scouting reports from day one.
  22. That's not my point. I didn't say that i wanted Greene as the #1 either.
