  1. Brian 12:28 Do you think Will Smith will bring back a big return for the Giants? AvatarJay Jaffe 12:29 Eh, not really. He may be the most desirable reliever on the market, or at least the most desirable lefty, but he's also a pending free agent. They're not going to get a Francis Mejia-level prospect. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/jay-jaffe-fangraphs-chat-6-27-19/
  2. Man, people hate math. If you are running a business, you make decisions based on process and numbers. The numbers are pretty clear, it is better to not bunt there. That's without realizing Schoop has good power.... And isn't a bunter! This aversion to process doesn't surprise me though.
  3. Both fangraphs and baseball America are saying that they aren't doing much ranking here anymore.... Since many players are signed when they are fourteen.... Once players have deals in place, they only work out with their new team. Scouts haven't even watched most of these guys in two years. Also, as BA pointed out, bodies and ability are really in flux at this age. They mention the Twins first pick this year as a guy that want even really in anyone's serious radar a year or two ago....
  4. I think it's pretty clear they thought Mejia and Romero would be good RPs. They then hoped on the back end. It didn't work, not sure why on Romero..... Now they need to pivot.
  5. He's not now, when they need him. When can we expect this?
  6. Of course, they have also traded for players for three or four years, and which of those is helping the bullpen right now in a big way? Missing in the, the RP FAs stink analysis..... How are the random players across the league doing that have been called up, as am alternative? Like, all the AA and AAA relievers, and on the teams that acquired FAs, how would the next minor league player do? That's a hard analysis..... But that's the alternative. Pitching is really hard in the RP area. It's possible that there are only so many arms on the planet that can get out ML hitters. As teams ask RP to do twice as much as they used to, maybe there just aren't enough quality pitchers?
  7. I don't think you should worry about options for someone Rooker's age. The forty man? That's a possible concern. His numbers are crazy good right now.
  8. Which players have come in the last 2 years, as I've been posting? It's been called a good/great system for at least 2 years. Nothing false about wondering where the actual help is.
  9. Did people really think Littel was a legit starting candidate this year? And Gonsalves? Both seem like RPs to me. Thorpe? Yes, I thought he was next up. Having 60% of your rotation becoming FAs, no one in AAA ready, and a limited budget doesn't look good for next year......hence my desire to go more all in this year than they planned, now that they have this kind of lead.
  10. Strong, but not sending good players to Minnesota again this year. They really need them to start sending up good players next year. As you state, other systems are sending good and great prospects up. I really thought Wade would hot better this year. I thought he'd pass Cave at some point, offensively enough, to get called up if there was an injury. Still hopeful.
  11. I'd guess it changes the ETA, given he's not getting promoted to AA any time soon. I really wanted to believe that the Twins finally had their fast riser.
  12. I'd bet Stewart isn't eligible for their rankings..... But I could be wrong.
  13. Yes and no. It's nice to have 5 pitchers that give you a shot at winning, rather than 4. Those extra 10 or 15 good starts a year lead to 6-10 more wins over the season (WAR's biggest weakness for pitchers, imo). For the playoffs, yes, bigger deal at the top. But not having to start guys that give you good starts less than half the time, having to cycle thru them and manage the roster, and saving the bullpen some innings is a big deal over 162 games (or 20-30 starts).
  14. I can't imagine they paid him to be a fifth starter, though. I'm guessing he's their 4th best starter the rest of the way.....Possibly third, but I doubt it.
  15. For years people said Amazon and apple and Google were too expensive.... My thought is that if you don't need the cash, investing in good companies with good leadership is a good idea. I still love Shopify and Okta. I am still a mild believer in New Relic, but they aren't getting traction. Nvidia is no longer my favorite, but they are priced cheaper, so maybe? I can't comment on the rest, as I haven't looked at them. This is, of course, not advice, just observations.....
  16. Perhaps the worst part of a lost year.... Not seeing what the youth had. Given what others have done this year, I can't see any reason not to give him a shot.
  17. I never understood people panicking over a 21 year old getting his first taste of AAA. Sure, Gordon has lost some luster, but many here have doubted that pick all along, despite his rapid rise. I doubt hell be a star, but I would bet good money he's in the majors a long time, barring injuries.
  18. True. But also the pen has been better than expected.
  19. That last sentence is key. Sometimes people think that if we voice displeasure at a decision, that we think it is awful/evil/the end. Mostly it's mild disappointment.
  20. that's different than him being a head liner for a difference maker, which is the post I responded to (without quoting, oops). Of course he can be part of a trade, anyone can.
  21. I don't see a rebuilding team trading for a 26 year old minor leaguer. That doesn't seem like it fits within a realistic timeline at all to me.
  22. From what we're told, MN would go two years. Not sure why we don't believe that's the reason. In other words, they wanted him, just not at three years. It was about the money.
  23. Which had nothing to do with the fact the Twins generally have had less money to offer. But the fact that Cruz, Shoot, and Perez all signed here means someone wants to. Just not maybe always who we want, one way or the other.
