  1. I don't see AZ weakening their SP going into next year. If anything, they want to add MLB star power at this point. The time to get Galen was when MIA traded him....but that ship has sailed.
  2. He's not settling for a 1 year deal. No chance. Zero.
  3. 200 innings? Hardly no one does that now. Only 40 pitchers started 30 games this year (counting Gray). I think people need to adjust their thinking about SP at this point.....
  4. that's so far from what this post said, it is like you didn't read it.
  5. You planning to find a better catcher? Jeffers put up 2.7 fWAR in 96 games, 77 as a catcher. Those are some elite numbers, 11th overall when playing C, and all but one of those had at least 15% more games as a catcher than him. If he'd caught as many games as Rautshcman at that pace, he'd outfWAR him by at least half a point, and be the 5th best catcher in the game. What are we expecting to be considered elite? Wallner is a rookie....who put up 1.9 fWAR in 79 games......is he elite? No. Is he possibly in the top 5-10 among LFers? Yes. He had 41 games as a LF and put up 1.5 fWAR while being a LFer....let's just multiply that by 3, so 123 games, and he's at 4.5 fWAR. That would make him the 2nd best LFer in the game.....I don't know if he can put that up, but maybe 3.5 fWAR...which is 3rd best among LF while playing LF. Now, you want to fix things? 1B, CF, and DH are your key positions for this team. RF if they let Kepler go, which they won't. 3B if Lewis isn't healthy.....but you shouldn't plan on that, IMO.
  6. Sure, but that has almost nothing to do with the comments in this thread I was replying to. The Astros have an elite team, they've been to the ALCS 7 straight years.....if that's the bar for success, good luck, as like 2 teams have done that recently.
  7. ALL of Vazquez worth this year was in his defense, and while I agree we can estimate it, I'm MORE confident that we know the value of hitting than we do of catcher defense. In 10% more plate appearances, Vazquez put up 0.5 less fWAR, and ALL OF THAT was in defense. I'll take Jeffers over Vazquez all day every day.
  8. Tiny sample size. I'm not giving up on Wallner or Jeffers based on 6 games. If I can only have one of the two things, I'm getting a number 1/2 pitcher. You need to get to the playoffs, and you need to pitch there.
  9. It is the opposite....good pitching makes it REALLY hard to string hits together. Fangraphs published an article on this....looking at playoff teams and how they should be built. These series are TINY sample sizes, and conclusions shouldn't be drawn about future performance. We weren't lulled into forgetting the first three months, the roster was totally different in the 2nd half with Lewis, Polanco, and Wallner in there. Nick can accurately state what didn't work, but that doesn't imply anything about what should work in the future.
  10. I'd certainly be open to trading for a SP, but I couldn't guess who that would be at this point. And, the FO can work on that and offense at the same time.......not to mention the dozens of other things they are working on that aren't even on teh field related.
  11. No team looks at W-L records of SP to make decisions on said pitchers. No organization.
  12. I'm with most of you.....2 years with an option for 3. Or, sign Nola, but he'll want 7 years or so.....do people have stomachs for that? I don't know..... There are like 2-4 other good SPs I'd spend money on, and I definitely want one more GOOD SP, so, ya, good luck to all sides! Big fan of Gray and the trade to get him.
  13. Gray is getting a QO, but I don't think he counts as on the 40 man? None of those other FAs NEED to be signed, but I'm betting money they sign Taylor and DON'T trust Martin to take over (with Castro and Buxton).
  14. It's also about willingness to take chances on youth .... Can Martin start in center? Can Lee be the backup SS and 3b if there is an injury? I see no way they give up on Miranda..... He was hurt all year. This year they refused to trust youth, largely, keeping Gallo around and avoiding playing Wallner as long as possible. What will they try next year?
  15. SWR isn't being cut.... He's 22, I think. All the other pitchers? Does it matter if you lose them if they don't have options, or even if they do?
  16. With Castro and Martin, you don't likely even consider Gordon at this point. He's replaced already. Y'all are likely right on Prato though.
  17. Good point. I'd have to look at numbers to see if I do it anyway
  18. Camargo, Martin, Salas, E Rod, &Severino
  19. Wow, I've never succeeded like that with carrots. I'm about to plant garlic....
  20. sigh. whatever. No matter why, I don't understand it.
  21. i understand that perspective, but don't use it myself. I made the mistake of coming into the game thread yesterday, I won't be doing that if they are losing today. The thread was unreadable for me.
  22. Not one pitch and the thread is already filled with negativity. Have fun everyone....
  23. They literally swept TOR, carried the team to the division title, and hit well most of the year. It is more likely a small sample size than choking or not being ready.
  24. My theory also, but some people here are sure it is something more devious....
