  1. Great demonstration! Yeah, with Gibson and Hughes both banged up but still wanting to make their next starts, there's no good reason not to reshuffle the rotation a little and get either May or Meyer up here to pitch the KC series Tuesday.
  2. It was a relief to hear Jim Pohlad's comments that were published right after the All Star festivities. Seems like Pohlad himself will be the one to lead us out of the Comfort Zone, which is how it should be. So let's see what actions the Twins take in the next few months. To paraphrase Pohlad: "Prospects? Don't talk to me about prospects. Win baseball games."
  3. Right. I hope Jim Pohlad's recent comment that "prospects aren't players until they're players" was a wake up call. Maybe Pohlad is the outside voice many fans have been waiting for? Talk is cheap though. We'll see. Also, this is what scares me about talk of Mike Redmond or Doug Mientkiewicz coming on as coaches. Two more guys from the good old days. Please, no.
  4. me too - I just jumped in at shortstop. We seem to have assets at short for the present, the near term, and long term. No longer the black hole. I agree with you on Escobar. He shouldn't have been shifted to third. Wouldn't have made much of a difference either way, though. At this point I'd let Escobar play full time and see what happens. He's done well enough. And there's Santana too (who might as well stay in Center at this point). Gardy likes to "mix 'n match" lineups though I'd prefer writing guys into the same spot day after day. Escobar and Santana ought to bridge the time until Polanco is ready for a chance, and right behind him Gordon. Shudder to think that Stephen Drew might have been playing SS full time this year (and taking at bats yada yada)
  5. Guerrier was good at times, I thought it never made much sense to bring him back, but it's still a little jarring to hear the news. Best of luck to him - very nice career.
  6. LOL Is that like the old trick when the nose tackle barfs on the football just before the center snaps it???
  7. I wonder if this afternoon would have been a good day for his debut. Would only have been 3 days rest but he has a fresh arm and will be on pitch count and full of adrenaline regardless of when his debut is. I can understand the Twins wanting to wait until the last minute to determine Gibson's status though, which would not leave much time for May to fly here. Maybe next time. Sigh.
  8. Does Keith Law hate the Twins as much as Jim Pohlad does?
  9. Re Alex Meyer: Like spycake said, Garza has gotten very good results his entire career. Was he rushed in 2006? Not sure it matters, but, by his third year (in TB) he pitched well enough into the ALCS to win an MVP and go on to the World Series, all this at age 24... The Twins are not mishandling Meyer in any way, shape, or form, but I do hope they see fit to get him some MLB experience this year and let him compete for a job in the rotation spring of next year. Which is pretty much what most of us are hoping. Re Brian Dozier: Like I said about Perkins, keep him and build around him, but if we get an offer that would cause even Dozier to say "Wow, they offered what!?" then deal him.
  10. I don't see any takers for Correia. I assume Morales is playing first base in order to make him more marketable, since Parms has been playing a pretty good first base too. On the Perkins question: I also say keep him. He's a reason to watch the games, if nothing else. Only if you get an offer you can't refuse, an offer that Perkins himself would say "wow, can't pass that up / am I really worth that much?"
  11. I agree with you too. Much more continuity in baseball offices than on the ball fields -- that includes both players and coaches. There is nothing unusual about any of that. But team owners do not change the front offices frequently, or lightly. Pohlad is obviously not going anywhere. Ryan likely not going anywhere either, nor St. Peter. Souhan's article I believe is basically asking "isn't it time for a new manager?" Like it or not, that's the only question that really matters to many people come the end of the season (again). The GM's you cite above have all cycled through different managers periodically. This organization boasts that they are all as close as family, and they mean it. So it's been a more difficult question than it should be. If Gardy had offered to step down after last year or the year before, I bet everyone in the front office on up would have been a little wistful, but ultimately relieved and would have let him go, and been able to give him a glowing reference to boot.
  12. I'm happy for Suzuki and he's been fun to watch, but it's time we give him a chance to play for a contender and trade him asap, get something good for him. Pinto and Herrmann are not young and we don't honestly know yet if they can be full time players. Will they even have options after this year?
  13. It looks delicious. I thought it might be a Spinal Tap album cover, though.
  14. What do people see in Mientkiewicz other than being an ex-Twin and a funny nickname? I didn't see anything in him as a player that screamed manager material. I wonder if people might be confusing "fire in the belly" for something else.
  15. It's also gotta be tough in a media/clubhouse atmosphere where a series in Detroit in May becomes a "huge series for us" and homestands become "critical" and "we really need this game" and stuff like that. Every time I catch the radio pregame show, that's what I hear, from broadcasters, players, whoever. I'm not as familiar with the tv/Fox presentation but maybe it's similar. It might explain why we can look so good in one stretch of games, and then be completely flat in the next. We're a long way from the light touch, long view approach of Tom Kelly and Herb Carneal in that regard. and this is actually how Maddon is rallying the Rays back into contention. Just an idea.
  16. Love it. Here's another link http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/mariners-angels-trade-arrow-celebrations?ymd=20140720&content_id=85515492&vkey=news_mlb
  17. At least recognize that Santana won two Cy Youngs in two separate years?
  18. The five players Mr Brooks named above all played together from 2004-2007. There was no patching those years.
  19. I liked Pam Oliver. But if Fox does anything well, it's to unfailingly find women with fake blonde hair who are always the most qualified to present the news to us.
  20. Good work jorgenswest.. is the league +/- percentage right at 0.0? If so I'd say Pinto is just fine as a pitch framer. (selectively throwing out Correia and Pelfrey, both who will not be around here much longer.)
  21. I agree with your four points except that I think depth is very sexy But to your first point we will disagree. I'm suspicious of this team's culture. I've gotten really uncomfortable with all these guys like Pelfrey, Kubel, Morales, ("and frankly lots of others") etc, who seemingly are just dying to get in here, and never leave. If they are any good they should be marketing their talent to the highest bidder. Also consider that Correia and Willingham have also expressed interest in signing long term here!
  22. I don't know. I'm fine with the Jeter sentimentalism. I loved the commercial and the ovations.
  23. No, if he's reasonable I see the logic, I'm just ready to move on. Rather win 80 games next year with 20 yr olds than 30 yr olds.
