  1. Ohio native Larry Hisle played five seasons for the Minnesota Twins, from 1973 to 1977. Hisle was productive during these years, providing power and never dipping below an OPS+ of 111. He played left field and center field in equal measure. In 1977 Hisle led the American League in Ribbies with 119. Hisle signed with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1978. Very well liked across baseball, Hisle retired prior to the 1983 season. From there, Hisle was immediately invited into coaching and staying involved in MLB. Heading into 2024, Hisle continues with the Milwaukee Brewers in community youth outreach.
  2. good post, @jharaldson I look at this not as a broken promise, but as a signal, from Pohlad to the front office, that their time is up. I see this through the lens of the Correa signing(s). I have no insider knowledge, but I am guessing that the quarter of a Billion with a B dollars they will be transferring to Correa over his stay here is not sitting well, nor should it. Fans who loved the Correa signing have very little standing to complain about no money being spent this offseason-- plenty was spent in 2022 and 2023 and plenty of prospect value went out the door with it. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the Twins fail to advance to the ALCS in 2024 and Pohlad will keep them around anyway. Time will tell.
  3. Also, worst football take I’ve heard in a long time, and PST nomination, from none other than Ben Leber: the KC kicker should have won the MVP award 🙂 The thing is, I don’t even necessarily disagree that much, except that the only reason he presented was that Mahomes didn’t have a good game. Umm, what? Did he not see the 4th quarter and overtime? I agree with Leber that it’s lazy how QBs are just given the award automatically. However, Leber could have mentioned how Aaron Donald should have won it two years ago. (Kupp actually won it that time.) Didn’t bring it up. Everyone I think agrees that Butker is a Top 3 nfl kicker but the kick at the end of regulation was very short. I don’t think kickers need that extra recognition, even for being clutch. Leber also said KC should have run one more play with six seconds at the end of regulation, and attempted the FG with one or two seconds left if necessary. Hard disagree. Too much can go wrong trying to get fancy. Ask Pete Carroll and Malcolm Butler. and just the humor factor. Even disregarding how Mahomes engineered that touchdown drive in overtime and deserved the MVP, hearing someone say the kicker should get a MVP in the Super Bowl just sounds funny. Kudos for sticking your neck out and saying it though! But, no. Also, Mahomes calling out “we’re good! we’re good!” before motioning Hardman on that final play (hard to hear because Romo talks over it). Mahomes is basically telling the whole offense ‘This is it Boys, this is the Touchdown. We got it.’ Kelce didn’t even turn around when the defender picked him up instead of tracking over to Hardman. Kelce just watched the TD happen on the Jumbotron and threw up his arms. (Kelce is one of the two reads on that play.) Unbelievable the awareness all these guys have. Mahomes is the rightful MVP. Man I love greatness. Anyway, still tons of respect for Leber and maybe the most entertaining Super Bowl I have ever seen. Thanks everyone for your company on these football threads all season. Go Twins! Edit: Actually Kelce was not the second read on that last play either. I will try to stick to my hot baseball takes!
  4. I heard that the San Francisco front office wanted to win the coin toss so that they could take the ball, and have the third possession of overtime. San Fran thought it was most likely that the first two possessions would end the same. Which didn’t happen, and which as Mike said above, KC did not seem intent on letting that happen. KC was going for the win. Dan Campbell would approve. So the best way that San Fran’s thinking works is if they thought both teams would punt or settle for field goals on their first overtime possession, and then San Fran could drive down and kick the final field goal on the third possession. Never mind that some of the San Fran players were confused about the overtime rules.
  5. Purdy was great last night. Mahomes is the goat. I was trying to picture the Vikings positional guys playing in that game last night and trading blows, and I couldn’t. I would be fine saying goodbye to Kirk (but ask me tomorrow) and finally tearing it down for a year as long as there is a plan to be good in 2025. A boom/bust cycle in the NFL doesn’t need to last more than a couple seasons.
  6. Anyone can get around on a fastball. Like most, the problem with Sgt. Duckett was that he couldn’t hit the breaking pitch
  7. My understanding is that MLB declares every square foot of the United States to be in some team’s market. I pulled this off the internet - so obviously you know it is true haha - but I think this map is accurate
  8. That does seem like a good comp. However, I am high on Varland and not as high on Gonzalez. I also have a bit of trade fatigue. I’m not sure why Milwaukee does this trade. I am not one to worry about capturing future value from good players heading in to their free agency seasons— I think a team in the Twins or Brewers position ought to field their best teams for the present.
  9. Many have already pointed this out, and we always forget, but you need to take those sugary commercial top-100 lists with a grain of salt. Jose Salas and Simeon Woods Richardson were on those lists. After sleeping on it, Gabriel Gonzalez — I’m sure he’s a great guy personally — feels a lot more like one of those guys to me, than a guy still on the rise.
  10. That’s interesting, thanks. I will make the comparison that trying to acquire that fielding skill as an adult might be a bit like learning a language as an adult or trying to pick up a new instrument. You can practice enough to get to a level where you can get by, and enjoy yourself, and might experience a few graceful moments, but that inherent fluency will never be there. Julien could take a million ground balls at this point and many of us still would not trust him. I think Julien is a terrible pairing for Correa (or conversely, Correa is great for Julien). If Julien’s bat is good enough, he might be able to carve out a few season in the field like Schwarber did. Otherwise I see Julien as a guy with a DH-PH career, nothing wrong with that.
  11. Excellent contribution, thank you for digging it up. Shannon Drayer is no ordinary talking head. She said (paraphrasing) the Twins had been pushing for Bryce Miller or Bryan Woo all offseason, but the Mariners would not budge on that. That the Mariners really have loved Polanco for a long time and this fixes two positions for them, 2B and 3B. Also that they didn't want to part with Topa. At first glance I thought the same thing, Topa is really the best piece of this bunch coming back. Thanks again.
  12. After every trade, somebody posts these values, and they always seem to be a big win in the Twins favor. With all the trading this front office has done over the years, and all this future value accruing over time, the Twins must be forecast for like 230 wins this year! 🙂
  13. It was lockdown in the first half. San Fran was just too good in the second half. That’s how I see it anyway
  14. I actually think Detroit has looked fantastic except for the sudden butterfingers their receivers got
  15. Yeah passed on the FG. But they probably don’t get this far without him
  16. So sad for Lions fans. Any of us can easily see this unraveling like Baltimore did.
  17. Unbelievable drops. That’s like five or six huge ones now in the third quarter. Just. Unbelievable. https://www.theonion.com/tony-romo-regrets-eating-greasy-fried-chicken-during-cr-1819568891
  18. Nice finish to that run by Purdy
  19. I don’t want the Lions to lose on plays like that
  20. We are also seeing a San Fran D that cant stop a single thing. Either that or Detroit is working magic. Possible.
  21. I gave him a pass last week for the wet conditions, but he hasn’t looked good in this game either
