  1. Darvish's twitter feed has gone silent again -- meaning absolutely nothing.
  2. At this point, I'd try to sign Cobb. Lynn can pitch but is kind of an odd duck and not sure he'd fit in here. All the manufactured drama surrounding Darvish is a red flag for me. Berrios is a bona fide ace in the making, anyway.
  3. True, but as long as they've done their work in AA, I don't personally believe pitchers need a whole lot of time in AAA before making their debuts. If and when Gonsalves falters he can be optioned. In any case, Duffey or Mejia would be much preferable than either Gonsalves or Miley as fifth starters. (assuming Berrios, Santana, Gibson, and trade/free agent are the top four)
  4. I've got it the other way around than you. The way to do it IMO is to sign the broken vet to the minor league deal and let Gonsalves or Romero start the season in the big league rotation. Then if the young guy falters you option the young guy and add Miley to the roster for a few starts. If the young guy doesn't falter then that's a good thing.
  5. If you are referring to the "gets too cold there" unattributed quote, I agree absolutely.
  6. There's another Darvish twitter exchange that I'm not ready to file under "has a home in Texas." Look, I thought the Twins had and still have a decent shot at him, but absent any other insight, it looks to me like he's falling back in love with Texas.
  7. So moving Duffey to the rotation opens a bullpen spot for idk Gibson? Setting the opening day rotation as of now, to: 1. E Santana 2. Berrios 3. Duffey 4. Jim Kaat? 5. ???
  8. Levine should brush up on his Japanese, just in case.
  9. more specifically, Darvish tweeting out a pic of himself in Texas having dinner with Texas Rangers personnel?
  10. It's great to discover new statistics and new ideas. Thank you! It will be interesting to see what this stat tells us. Santana threw what seemed to be a quality slider to Aaron Judge in the 1st inning of the wild card game, Judge was fooled by it, lunged and swung at it anyway, and the ball landed softly and safely in shallow center for a hit.
  11. Counterpoint: Rosario is learning to "play within himself," defining that vague phrase however you want
  12. Reed and Darvish share that agency - very interesting. This offseason is unfolding like a bad, slow, poorly written novel but with some interesting stuff at the end. MLBTR just quoted Luhnow/Astros as being "very happy" with their current roster: in other words, not interested in Darvish (my interpretation). Angels have not been linked to Darvish at all. Dodgers aren't interested. Good cases have been made why he's not returning to Texas or going to New York. Gotta be down to the Twins or Cubs.
  13. I'm glad this conversation is still going. I plan to dive in to your piece this weekend.
  14. Good points being made in this thread. It's quite possible that early extensions for top players will not be as cheap as they were in yesteryear, if they continue to exist at all. If the FO can get one done, great. If it means paying Buxton near-market a couple years from now, so be it.
  15. If the Twins offer Darvish one year for $40 million, Darvish might counter with 2 years for $80 million, or 3/120.
  16. Latest on Gerrit Cole, per MLBTR: I want to believe!
  17. Here is the tweet that I am referring to: https://mobile.twitter.com/pbcbreakdown/status/940390540998250497 What did this second tweet say, the tweet that you saw?
  18. Holey Smokes. Gordon, Granite and Jay are "hardly anything"? True, no one from the Twins side really followed up-- welcome to the world of lazy local Twins beat writers (not including Berardino, and Bollinger works for MLB). I would have liked to seen someone follow up. But the site that reported it is not a blog, it's a news site.
  19. That is a good question, and I appreciate your IFs. There's just too much we don't know. For the first time last season, I followed a few prospects regularly, by box score, to say nothing of attending games in person day after day. I can understand how it might be easy to project success on them, or give them too much rope. And maybe the Katoh projection for Gordon is off base and too low (Granite is already in the hole -0.2 fWAR, leaving him 7.0 fWAR to make up to meet his projection).
