  1. So, the Twins were effectively going to eat $12M for Carlos to pay for a 4th place team this year and another $32M to play for a non-contender next season as well. They only ate $33M, that's actually a really good deal for the Twins. The Astros valued him like a $25M/season player and he's been playing like a $10M/season player.
  2. The Mets gave up more for their lefty as well. This looks like the Twins held out for a lot and got left at the altar.
  3. What good is team control of a player most teams would non-tender in the first year of arbitration?
  4. WTF, this does nothing for the team in the long or short run. Just play Emmanuel Rodriguez.
  5. I think the Twins shed the $3M commitment they had to Bader which will bring their total salary decrease to ~$10M when this is through. Getting paid $3M to take two prospects is a good deal. It’s nearly impossible to mess up a pure rental trade.
  6. Sounds like the ask from Houston was Carlos Correa plus $50M plus Trevor Larnach for nothing.
  7. One nice thing about a LH hitting catcher is it is very easy to sit them when a LH pitcher starts. Easy to find a RH hitting catcher for those starts.
  8. Or, just a suggestion, fire Rocco instead of trading all the players.
  9. What's the downside for the free agent? "If it doesn't work out we'll trade you to a better team" isn't a big problem for most players.
  10. I would have been fine with this return for Jax, but wanted another prospect (Seth Johnson would have been nice) in return for Duran. "Proven closer" still carries some extra weight. I will point out that Duran wasn't nearly as highly regarded as Abel when the Twins acquired him for Escobar. If it turns out well, the Twins just got Jeffers and Ober (or Jeffers and Jax) in return for Duran, however, as has been pointed out elsewhere, the Twins took on more risk in the deal. The really sad part to me is the Twins missed their opportunity to get Duran to sign a deal that locked him up with the Twins until he was 30. They're going to miss out on Jeffers as well. Those are huge failures by the current front office. The Twins have to extend their talent below cost when they have the opportunity. I hope this means they are going to be able to dump Correa's salary on Houston. There is no reason at all to pay him $32M a season to play for a rebuilding team. Sell Coulombe, Bader, Castro, Jax and Stewart as well.
  11. Wallner accounted for all the run scoring in today’s game. Weird that you would single out the one player who produced a run as the problem with the offense.
  12. They will look a lot worse in the short term.
  13. There is basically zero chance that Jenkins gets called up this season. The Twins don’t need to add him to the 40-man roster until next year. There is a non-zero chance they call up Gonzalez. He is Rule 5 eligible in December and is a must-add for the 40-man roster.
  14. Let’s look at this another way. The $4.5M the Twins got the Tigers to eat in this trade can be sent to the Astros to get them to take Correa’s contract. Pretending that cash is useless to a baseball general manager is either hopelessly naive or unredeemably cynical.
  15. If you don’t think money is useful for assembling a professional baseball roster, then I guess we will never agree. Someone should tell the Dodgers they’re spending a ton of money for no reason.
  16. All minor league talent does is marginally increase the value of the team to whomever buys it.
  17. Dollars are a useful return to the baseball team. Dollars can be used to pay player salaries, invest in facilities, pay coaches and scouts, etc.
  18. So, to take USAFChiefs stance to the logical conclusion, we should all be disappointed if the Twins end the trade deadline without paying $100M+ to buy the top 20 prospects in baseball.
  19. If they really want to maximize prospects returned, they should buy down the remaining salary on all the expiring contracts they sell at the deadline. They should also consider sending additional cash. They could get a great prospect bundle if they traded Willi Castro and $20M to another team. Anything less than that would just be saving ownership money, right?
  20. It is possible the Tigers were much more willing to send cash to a division rival than a top prospect who might play against them in the future.
  21. Yes, this is why the Red Sox wouldn’t call up Rusney Castillo.
  22. I don’t think Spotrac is correct. ”A team's Competitive Balance Tax figure is determined using the average annual value of each player's contract on the 40-man roster, plus any additional player benefits.” Dobnak is not on the 40-man roster and doesn’t count toward the CBT calculation for the Tigers unless they call him up and put him on the roster.
  23. Is there a chance they swap disappointments? Correa for Christian Walker saves the Twins $50M and fills the giant hole at 1B.
