    I'm thinking Bailey Ober would be a good fit as one of those young arms. I don't think he's ever going to be more than a #3/4 starter but he's cheap and proven. I'm ready to sell high on him. Arraez, Ober and two prospects in the #20-30 range.

    They should probably be making these decisions sooner so the pitchers don't run out of options before they try converting them. On teams with established pitchers in the rotation the only option for some is the bullpen. That makes the decision a lot easier. The Twins depth chart has been empty for years but now there should finally be a pecking order established. Players who are not at the top of the depth chart for starting pitching at Double-A or higher and are taking up space on the 40 man roster (Vallimont, Henriquez, Strotman) should get converted sooner rather than later.

    Raya definitely "failed up". Compare to Enlow - at least Enlow had some success on the field before the injury.

    I'm not sure this is true. The payroll gap has exploded but revenues, since so much revenue is shared, have probably narrowed.

    Baseball's new CBA is already failing the spirit of competition | theScore.com So every team gets $230M in shared revenue but only 15 teams look like they'll spend even half of that on player payroll. This is true even with 12 playoff spots. The gap in payroll isn't because the big spenders are spending more. The luxury tax is flattening payroll at the top of the scale. The gap is because the small teams aren't spending at all. The Twins options are try to win, spend $150M or so on a competitive team and make $90M in profit or try to lose, spend $45M and make $180M. It is roughly twice as profitable for the Twins to intentionally suck as it is to go for it. They appear to be splitting it in half, try to put a mediocre team on the field for $100M, hope that they get lucky enough with the young pitching to be the 6th best team in the American League and expanded playoffs gives them a windfall that gets them closer to $170M in profit. If they don't make the playoffs at least they'll still sell tickets in August if the team is .500 and less than 5 games behind the final Wildcard spot. BTW the 12 team playoffs with the top 4 teams getting a bye made it a HUGE advantage to be one of the top 4 teams. That doubles the likelihood of a World Series appearance compared to the #5/6 team and guarantees a 7 game divisional series instead of a 3 game wildcard series.

    There would be no reason to put them on the 60 day IL until they needed a roster spot. Use the 10 day instead. However, they will need those roster spots if they want a full pitching staff.

    The Twins payroll got smaller. That was the goal. They wanted to have roughly the same team, but cheaper. The trade with the Yankees had nothing to do with improving the roster.

    Thorpe is lefthanded and 26. He'll keep finding teams to give him chances.

    I already bet on Garver (I said he was a little better). I assume you're taking Sanchez?

    Garver is better per inning but when you take into account playing time the gap narrows. Sanchez has played 88 games more than Garver over the last 3 years.

    I don't think Urshela is going to be worse than Donaldson the next 2 years. He's either an adequate stopgap at SS (better than moving Polanco back) or he's an average 3B. Donaldson's days as a plus defender at 3B are over. If they acquire a shortstop then Luis Arraez is still not a starter in this infield and Jose Miranda is waiting for playing time. They're worse at C mainly because they now have no depth at all. Garver isn't that much better than Sanchez. They can find a catch-and-throw guy for depth at catcher.

    The "have nots" are making a lot of money while the "haves" compete for championships.

    I am wondering just how much the Padres would pay to get rid of Wil Myers. They're up against the luxury tax and need to move Myers or Hosmer (yuck) to finish off their roster.

    Sanchez and Urshela are now the two oldest position players on the roster. This team got a lot younger. Baldelli is going to be the oldest guy in the dugout now.

    I don't understand this one at all. I had considered grabbing Urshela and Sanchez since I was pretty sure the Yankees didn't want them on the roster but figured the Yankees would be giving up prospects to the Twins to make it happen. The Twins have no reason to dump salary. Their payroll is low. This is like a Mariners trade where Jerry DiPoto is just moving players to feel like he's in charge.

    There were no pitchers as good as Sonny Gray who signed for as little as Sonny Gray has left on his contract. None. Rodon just got 2/$44 which is basically double Gray's contract. Hell, Jon Gray signed for 4/$56.

    I think they sold high on Petty. Imagine if they had traded Kohl Stewart the year after the draft.

    After that trade I'd be content to just acquire the rest of the Reds rotation at those prices. Sign me up for Mahle and Castillo.
