  1. This seems a little high for someone who grades out as an average defender at a corner position. We all know he's not going to hit .340 in the big leagues. I'm hopeful for a .260/.330/.480 slash line. That's a solid starter in the corners - pretty similar to current-day Josh Donaldson. I think I'd rather have Kirilloff in LF and Miranda at 1B.
  2. I'm not convinced there is one, just an adverse effect on owner profits.
  3. It would be good if teams had to win games to draw fans and make a profit. The current model is to have your favorite team suck and cash paychecks from the Dodgers and Yankees. Then expand the playoffs so that everyone with 80 wins makes it anyway.
  4. Raising the limit on the tax would allow the teams that actually want to spend money to spend money. If the Yankees share less revenue and aren't taxed they will actually spend the money on player salaries. If you force revenue sharing and a tax on the Yankees the small market teams will just pocket the cash and not spend it.
  5. That's not possible unless they're breaking NCAA rules (11.7 scholarships). Full rides are very, very rare in college baseball and anyone receiving a scholarship above 1/2 is going have to be a pitcher. Position players are usually getting a 1/4 scholarship and they're choosing between several programs who are all offering the 1/4 scholarship. Leaving a college baseball program with debt is a guarantee unless you have rich parents. If you have rich parents then struggling in the minors for low wages is probably not an issue either.
  6. I'm just making the point that most draft picks start out with a lot of college debt. They have to make payments immediately when leaving college. That will eat up a lot of that income buffer you thought they were getting with their bonus.
  7. Interesting. When I looked up some info I found out that before 2021 if you received a baseball scholarship the NCAA made you ineligible for other need based scholarships. College Baseball Scholarship Requirements and Facts (ncsasports.org)
  8. How about Hugh Fisher? 10th round pick out of Vanderbilt ($54,000 per year tuition) got a $100,000 bonus but had to be over six figures in student loan debt from 4 years at that school unless he qualified for some other financial aid besides his baseball scholarship.
  9. You are mistaken. Full ride scholarships for baseball are rare. They have 11.7 scholarships for 27 players. A half scholarship is a very good baseball scholarship and 1/4 is common. Scholarships only cover the cost of tuition/books, not room and board. Louie Varland played for a Division 2 school (only 9 scholarships for the whole team) and left as a junior. Even on a half-scholarship he would be looking at $60,000 in college costs for his 3 seasons. That eats up most of his $115,000 bonus.
  10. Minus their student loan payments for 3 years of college (and no degree).
  11. If it's a mistake it's a small one. I don't know if anyone thought Sano would turn into the worst first baseman in the league. He had been the worst RF in baseball and one of the worst at 3B so people should have considered that he wouldn't look good at 1B either.
  12. I think major league baseball would prefer that players took on $30,000 - $100,000 in college debt to pay for their own development. If they make things too nice nobody would play college ball.
  13. They will be lucky if 1/4 are starters and 1/4 are relievers. If you want a home grown pitching staff of 13 pitchers you should start with 50 pitching prospects.
  14. Don't forget how awful they are at signing and developing international free agent pitchers. That's 1/3 of the pitching talent in the league and the Twins have produced zilch. Brusdar Graterol, Fernando Romero and Edwar Colina are the best they have produced in the last decade. They signed Huascar Ynoa but traded him away before he was out of rookie ball for a pitcher who made exactly one start for the Twins. It's embarassing.
  15. Everything. The minor leaguers would become the overwhelming majority of votes for a contract agreement.
  16. The most important ability is availability. If it keeps him healthy he should back off on the pitch velocity.
  17. Sounds like they are tying that to higher financial penalties for exceeding the luxury tax. So, not a concession at all.
  18. I haven't seen anyone mention Jason Bartlett. The Twins traded him away for Delmon Young.
  19. Duran in AA 2019: 37 IP 4.86 RA9 10.0 K9 2.2 BB9 Duran in AAA 2021: 16 IP 5.06 RA9 12.4 K9 7.3 BB9 He hasn't proven himself in AA or AAA. Winder has pitched a lot better at those levels.
  20. He's running out of minor league options which means he needs to debut this season. That means he's probably headed to the bullpen. If he's only a reliever then he's ranked too high. If he loses this season to surgery then I think he's out of options next spring without any big league experience.
  21. Since when do minor leaguers cost $165,000 a year? 30 minor league players at $12,000 in salary is $360,000. Add in benefits and that's going to be the cost of one rostered minimum-salary player.
  22. You don't have to have very deep pockets to pay 30 minor league players. Any small market team could afford that. Hell, small market teams SHOULD be hoarding minor leaguers. It's the cheapest way to acquire talent.
  23. I hope he never throws 100 MPH in a game next summer. He's too young to be throwing that hard. It will ruin him.
  24. He's easily a top 10 guy. He's top 5 on most lists. Ceiling is higher than anyone except Balazovic.
  25. The track record is scary bad recently. MLB Draft: High school pitchers a bad choice in baseball - Sports Illustrated
