    Mike Pelfrey is 30 and hasn't been good as a starter since 2010. I think he'll quickly realize that it's the bullpen or get out of baseball. I agree that he could do better in a bullpen role if he can dial up the fastball.

    I'm tired of the Twins pinching pennies by using AAAA talent. Arbitration salaries are generally a steal unless the player is awful and if the player is that bad they should be replaced regardless. If anything they should be looking to upgrade on their bench by spending more money. The Orioles are a good example of how a contingency plan can lead to wins.

    Turning away free agent talent this offseason might be regretted in June. There is a lot of room in AAA for young players with options. This team should look at all opportunities to improve and that includes free agent talent. The idea that the Twins should only look internally and consider Danny Ortiz and AJ Achter as real options seems ridiculous to me.

    Gardy didn't platoon because he was a player motivator first and foremost. He liked telling someone they were the starter rather than having two "bench" players. It also made his job easier to pencil someone into the same lineup spot every day. Making the manager's job easier is not a good reason to do something.

    Taylor Rogers is the next Brian Duensing. Upside is not high enough for the top 10.

    Left out in the analysis is the two years of Shields were pretty expensive. They could have extended Ervin Santana or spent that money elsewhere. It isn't a strict talent-for-talent trade.

    I like the suggestion of Jose Oquendo. If you're going to steal from another organization why not the Cardinals organization?

    They should spend the other $20M+ on Colby Rasmus and a pitcher to replace Nolasco of course. Andre Ethier is a slightly below average CF who is likely to rate well in LF. He is much, much better than the Kubel, Willingham, Colabello and Parmelee levels of poor defense the Twins have had lately. Ethier is definitely not a "poor" hitter. He's a really good hitter who had a bad year. The whole point here is to buy low. His down year was still better than any other outfielder on the Twins 2014 roster.

    The guy you want from LA is Andre Ethier. Shorter, cheaper contract (only 3 years left with a vesting option). Good defender coming off a down year and mostly benched at the end of the season. If you deal Ricky (I want to be in LA!!!!!) Nolasco for Ethier you only increase payroll by $5M a season. The other benched outfielder I'd like to see in a Twins uniform is Colby Rasmus. LF Ethier, CF Rasmus and RF Arcia is an outfield I could get excited about.

    A good way to approach it would be "We feel bad that you fell just short of the final innings pitched incentive and to make it up would like to offer you a two year $25M contract extension."

    Garver only 4 slots away from Navaretto? Results matter.

    Perkins doesn't have a big contract. He has a modest contract for a relief pitcher. Papelbon makes $13M a year. Perkins is getting $4.6M next year and $6.5M after that. Even if he declines slightly he will be useful for years as a lefthanded specialist. I wouldn't be surprised to see Perkins pitching for a long time to come. Lefties with closing experience get nine lives. Guardado got by on a lot less stuff.

    I agree with the poster that mentioned the bullpen. The Twins bullpen may not look like the problem now but they're below average, aging and trending in the wrong direction. Overhauling the bullpen should be an offseason priority.

    Stewart pitched 87 innings in 19 games. Thorpe threw 71 innings in 16 games. Both averaged less than 5 innings per start. There are legion ball pitchers who throw more than that. Yet both pitchers ended the year hurt. I wonder if we will ever understand how to keep a pitcher healthy.

    In a park that suppresses HR like Target Field a good OF defense is a must. No more DH types in the outfield.

    Does it concern anyone that Thorpe and Stewart were both used about as lightly as you can use a starting pitcher and they both ended the season injured?

    I think MLB expands benefits with 60 days service time. If the Twins get him those benefits he can probably afford to go into coaching in the low minors.

    Why not Stephen Pryor? 7.1 BB/9, that's why.

    Bringing up Polanco edges him closer to Super 2. You never need worry about that with Bernier.
