    They would consider Snell because he just won a Cy Young Award and he wants to give the Mariners a discount to go back home to Washington.

    The Mariners gave up quite a bit to get Castillo. I don't think they want to move him. I am pretty sure the Twins could get Robbie Ray from the Mariners if they wanted him. That's a better target. The Mariners have been packaging talent with their high priced players just to free up room in their budget. With the salaries starting pitchers are getting I could see Ray opting out after 2024. FYI - The Mariners just recently announced they now own 100% of their regional sports network Root Sports.

    The Twins definitely had superior strategy in the Toronto series. Baldelli clearly out-managed Schneider. Houston figured out how to get to Sonny Gray and that was enough to beat the Twins.

    I am guessing Raya ends up in the bullpen as well as Varland. If they have too many good pitchers they can trade Ober and Ryan as they reach the end of arbitration to open up spots. Imagine the ransom the Twins could demand if they were the team with the proven, cheap pitching this offseason.

    They have a mixed trade record. Nelson Cruz for Joe Ryan was a steal.

    I think quite often Baldelli is playing his hunches when you think he's following the script from a spreadsheet. Baldelli uses a modern strategy - "using the spreadsheet" Baldelli acts like Tom Kelly - "playing a hunch" I don't think that's the case. I think he's wired to be a modern manager. He came from Tampa with a philosophy that the front office agrees with. I do think he has learned over the years and changed his approach. 2023 Rocco Baldelli is probably a better manager than 2020 Rocco.

    Bobby Witt Jr beat the Twins by himself last year. He'll be even more dangerous with better teammates.

    Alcala, Moran and Sands were all on the opening day roster and had options remaining. There was a slot available by moving Canterino to the 60 day injured list. I believe Celestino was also a possibility for the 60 day IL.

    Maybe for this front office but there are much worse trades throughout Twins history. They took a risk and Mahle was injured. If he had been healthy it would have been a fair deal. I have my doubts that the Rangers will get much out of this contract. I know they fixed his elbow but the shoulder is still a potential problem. They're paying him like he's a cinch to be healthy.

    Las Vegas might be the most disgusting town I've ever visited and MLB just decided to move the Oakland Athletics there. Rampant drug use, prostitution, garbage everywhere and it's hotter than the surface of the sun.

    It may be distasteful, but if it's legal it isn't a crime. I really hate walking through cigarette smoke and seeing cigarette butts on the ground but it isn't a crime to smoke a cigarette. I will agree that homelessness is up which means people are going to be more likely to interact with people who are homeless. Not having a home is also not a crime.

    I hope so. His health has been holding him back. Hard to develop when you can't pitch.

    Anyone can express their opinion. If you put an opinion out into the world expect it to be critiqued. If your opinion can't stand up to critique then it isn't worth much. This applies to discussions about cities as much as it does discussions about who the 26th man on the Twins roster should be.

    Would you believe that New York actually has the lowest crime rate of any city that has MLB? It's true.

    There's also a shortage of nurses, teachers, mental health specialists and bus drivers. Unemployment is really low and wages have increased faster in the private sector than they have in public sector jobs.

    Well, you can since the "defund the police" folks didn't get anything they asked for. The budget for police officers in Minneapolis actually increased substantially.

    Grisham is a decent 4th outfielder but at his contract cost they shouldn't give up anything to acquire him.

    I agree, but the starters are also increasing their effort. They're not pacing themselves for a 9 inning game, they're throwing harder knowing they only need to provide 5 innings. It's the difference between running a 1600m race with one runner versus a relay between someone running the 800 and 4 sprinters running a 200. There is the desire to give starters a "throw" day in between starts to practice their craft. I still think that could be: Game, off, throw, off, Game and fit into a 4 man rotation.

    There is crime everywhere. Thinking cities are crime all the time is just as accurate as believing rural areas are nothing but wife-beating rednecks cooking meth while high on Oxycontin. I don't know why San Francisco is singled out as a particularly high crime city. St. Louis has by far the highest crime rate of any major league city and we didn't hear about that when Sonny Gray signed with the Cardinals. Baltimore, Cleveland, Kansas City and Detroit aren't particularly attractive when it comes to crime rates either. If free agents were only concerned about crime rates they'd be flocking to Tampa, FL. Every major city has high priced neighborhoods catering to rich folks so they don't have to interact with the rest of us.

    I've been thinking more about the qualifying offer and the Ohtani contract. The QO is calculated as the average of the top 125 paid people in MLB. For Ohtani do they use the $70M number or the $46M for this calculation? That is a difference of $200,000 increase in the value of the QO. In 2023 the 125th highest paid player was Joey Gallo at $11M. MLB Salary Rankings | Spotrac Replacing him with Ohtani's $70M will move the value of the QO up by $470k. Every player who signs for more than $11M (including arbitration eligible like Soto) will bump out someone in the 2024 list of the top 125 highest paid players. MLB trade rumors is predicting 8 arbitration awards above $11M and we are likely to see 20 more free agents get $11M or higher. The 125th highest paid player will probably earn $12.5M in 2024. With the number of $20M+ contracts handed out this offseason I would not be surprised to see the QO top $22M next winter.

    Kershaw is going year to year. It's common knowledge that he prefers to pitch for the Dodgers or for Texas (he's from Dallas and has a home there). I guess if both the Dodgers and Rangers pass on him then maybe the Twins could get involved.
