  1. Teams usually pay a premium for less risky players, not more risky players. Bell has averaged -0.1 WAR over the last 3 seasons so I was giving the benefit of the doubt that he can produce 0.5 WAR. Plus, it makes the math easier if I'm not using 0 WAR as the divisor. His defensive value is non-existent so he's going to have to do it all with his bat. His 80% projection is what he did in Arizona: a 120 OPS+, 1.5 WAR season. The Twins are paying him like that performance is a lock. Nobody has found Bell attractive in the trade market. The Nationals weren't able to trade him last season. Arizona gave up nothing to Miami the previous season to obtain him. He returned a grade C utility outfielder prospect the season before that. This isn't surprising. Contenders are looking for good players to improve their chances of winning, not stopgaps who are barely worth a roster spot. Pushing a big chunk of his salary into the option buyout will make him more difficult to trade since the cost is backloaded. Do you think he'll be more or less attractive than he was last season with an extra $1M commitment?
  2. The Twins can't afford to pay players $14M per WAR.
  3. This is where a LH throwing 1B has an advantage. They'll naturally be better going to their right - where their glove is. Stand on the line and you never have to worry about fielding a ball with your backhand.
  4. Partly because balls down the line turn into doubles and triples while balls between 1B and 2B turn into singles, especially with the shallow RF in Target Field. They are maximizing the run value of their defense.
  5. I will take the under on the projections of 1.3 WAR for Outman, 1.2 WAR for Julien, 1.1 WAR for Keirsey and 1.0 WAR for Gasper. For reference, Royce Lewis has a 1.4 WAR projection. It is interesting that ZIPS thinks Emmanuel Rodriguez is a better player on offense and defense than Outman. Kody Clemens projects as the best glove on the entire team. I think they're too pessimistic on Austin Martin (0.3 WAR).
  6. The minor league free agent SS are coming off the board. They need to grab one.
  7. The Twins are already on record that they believe Luke Keaschall is a "future star". If they believe that, they need to put their money where their mouth is. If they won't extend him, then they don't really believe in him.
  8. If this team is going to trade someone, they should trade the oldest and most expensive player and keep the youngest and cheapest player. That means they should solve the DH conflict by trading Josh Bell.
  9. None of these are as good of candidates for an extension as Jeffers was last season.
  10. Correa is the highest paid player who isn't actually on the Twins. Bell is the 3rd highest paid Twin.
  11. The arbitration projections for each of them is less than the $7M they gave Josh Bell.
  12. Lewis is clearly the most talented player in the infield, but he gets ignored in all of these articles.
  13. Much more often the opportunity is a runner is on 1st with two outs. Arraez can't drive that runner in, but Bell can.
  14. Brooks Lee was "versatile" if you mean equally bad at every infield position. They don't need players to move between the infield and the outfield. They need someone who can actually play shortstop.
  15. Cool, then we'll just move Josh Bell to shortstop and coach him up since, according to you, he's athletic enough to do it.
  16. I think it's a bad bet, but at least it's a bet with a future payoff if it succeeds. Better than betting on retread 30-year-olds with no future.
  17. More articles about how the 3rd highest paid player on the team isn't so bad if you hide him in the lineup and in the field.
  18. Nobody wanted Josh Bell last year at the deadline and he was owed less money than he'll be owed this year.
  19. If they had Juan Soto on a 1-year deal, at least they would have something useful to trade at the deadline. Nobody wanted Josh Bell last year and Arizona only wanted Bell the previous year because their starting 1B had season-ending injury. That is the other advantage of signing better players - they can be traded for prospects.
  20. "He was okay 5 years ago" is a really dumb reason to add someone.
  21. You can give top tier athletes a lot of repetitions and improve their consistency on defense. You can't take bad athletes and "coach them up" to become good. The competition is also working hard and they're better athletes.
  22. So far the Twins, in their drive to contend, have added a bad manager, a bad catcher, a bad first baseman and a mediocre relief pitcher. Start printing playoff tickets!
  23. But there is hope that Arraez can get pickier. He can choose more wisely, and his numbers should improve. He's not going to get faster or better on defense, and he's still not a good choice for a long-term contract.
  24. Me too, but Josh Bell is also pretty much the worst choice they could have made to fill first base this offseason.
