  1. I will take "waiver wire" over Gasper, Olivar, Cardenas, Winkel, Baez, Cosetti and Ruiz. BTW - where's Pereda?
  2. The Twins defense looks pretty bad. I started looking through the Steamer predictions for good defenders. The top free agent defender, by a large margin, is JT Realmuto with a 10.3. He's the #5 ranked defender in the entire set of projections and the #1 catcher. He would make every pitcher on the roster look better. The next highest free agent defender is also a catcher - Reese McGuire. If the Twins signed McGuire and traded Jeffers to the Phillies it would improve their defense but not much as it hurts their offense. Alex Bregman is the highest ranked non-catcher with a 1.8 Def ranking. Next on the list is Isaiah Kiner-Falefa with a 1.1 Def rating. Bo Bichette is next with a 1.0 Def, then Jorge Mateo with a 0.7. Harrison Bader is the top ranked free agent outfielder by DEF with a 0.7 rating. Byron Buxton gets a -1.4 for comparison. Josh Bell is ranked 4168 out of 4193 when you sort for defense with a -11.3 rating. DEF is a combined positional and defensive ability metric which means time at DH will hurt your rating. Nevertheless, that's terrible. Trevor Larnach gets a -8.4 rating. Matt Wallner -7.0. Alan Roden -3.6. Kody Clemens -3.5 (good for a 1B), Miguel Andujar -3.8. Eric Wagaman -2.2 (but only 117 PA of projected playing time). Austin Martin -2.8 which is average for a LF.
  3. 1) Culpepper or Tait. 2) Joe Ryan. Ryan, Pablo Lopez and Buxton are all declining assets, but Ryan loses the most trade value after this incredibly cheap season. 3) The 2026 #1 draft pick. If not him, I will pick Dasan Hill.
  4. If the Twins trade Jeffers to the Phillies, who else would be in the market for Realmuto? It looks like the Padres and Red Sox are the only known suitors. The Twins could jump in. They have the cash.
  5. Pitchers are more difficult to assess but the Twins are especially bad at acquiring pitching through international free agency.
  6. Looks like they also avoided arbitration with Jeffers ($6.7M). Too bad they couldn't get him to sign an extension.
  7. It's worse than being #34 in the draft. About 2/3 of MLB players come through the draft and 1/3 are international free agents. That means it's more like the 68th ranked player in the draft. It is really difficult to guess at which 15- and 16-year-olds will be future MLB players. I wish international free agency started at age 18.
  8. Beats the hell out of acquiring guys who produced negative WAR last year. Brooks Lee - the guy with chronic back issues.
  9. Is it going to hurt Culpepper's development to play every day in MLB?
  10. Schultz would be a good addition to the 40-man roster.
  11. Culpepper can help the 2026 team if he produces more than negative 2 WAR.
  12. I didn't think "no half measures" meant "We won't make a move that could even be called a half-measure. All our transactions will be non-factors that are neutral at best or perhaps make the team worse".
  13. Signing Isaiah Kiner-Falefa and Miguel Andujar is a 3-4 WAR upgrade on Orlando Arcia and Eric Wagaman. That's like adding an All-Star to the roster.
  14. Hate this move because they will think they're done shopping now. Shortstop will be brutal for the Twins in 2026 unless they promote Culpepper to the majors.
  15. Festa isn't good enough to pitch in the rotation and he's 26 years old. That's exactly the guy you convert to a reliever.
  16. For Canterino, retirement is more likely than pitching again in the minors.
  17. Arcia and Lee combined for -2.0 WAR last season. That's not "fine", it's really, really bad. That's an incredibly low "success" bar for Culpepper to get over.
  18. Lee already faltered last season and Arcia was horrible. How long do they need to be terrible before people will believe they're terrible? What more does Culpepper need to do to "earn" a roster spot over the worst infielder in major league baseball in 2025? Give Culpepper the starting SS job and use Lee as the utilty infielder. Keep Arcia in AAA in case someone gets injured and you need a backup for 2 weeks. Arcia can be outrighted off the 40-man roster when the injured player returns because nobody will claim him off waivers. Does this make sense? Seems obvious to me.
  19. I posted a list a few times around here. Just give the job to Culpepper. It’s one thing to block the rookies with competent veterans. It is something else entirely to block them with the worst MLB players from the previous season.
