  1. There isn't really a spot for Varland in the bullpen at the moment. Topa is likely to come up at the end of his rehab assignment which will send Dobnak back to AAA. Sands has pitched well enough to keep a spot. Richards is the new guy. They aren't releasing Okert or Thielbar to add Varland. He will have to wait until rosters expand in September.
  2. I keep seeing "regression" used to indicate worse performance. In math the term just means that over a large sample a player's performance will tend to their long-term baseline. Christian Vazquez has "regressed" by hitting with a .910 OPS in July which brings his stats UP to his baseline expectation. If Woods Richardson is a good pitcher, then his statline is right at expectations and regression would just mean continued performance at this level.
  3. If his chase rate can get to league average, he'll be fine. I'm fine with some swing and miss in the zone if it comes with huge power when he connects. Only a few players (Vlad Guerrero) can connect for power with pitches outside of the strike zone.
  4. Surprised they weren't able to get an accounting firm to sponsor the banner.

  6. The way you have described it sounds like the umpire got it 100% correct. If the batter is out of the box and the catcher's throw had a reasonable chance to get the runner then the runner should be out due to Kepler's interference. I watched the play The umpire was 100% correct.
  7. Which is really weird since both teams ended up settling for prospects MUCH worse than those players from other teams. If true it is like they were more interested in hurting the Twins in 2024 than they were in improving their own ballclubs in the future.
  8. Any team except the Twins. Snell remaining on the Giants was the biggest surprise of the deadline for me. That is a huge lost opportunity for San Francisco. Now all they have is the downside of the contract.
  9. They didn't have to trade away a lot, just a little. A few prospects they probably won't miss and $5M would have brought the help they needed the most. Why is it Arizona, Seattle, Kansas City and Milwaukee can do this but not the Twins?
  10. There's always next year!
  11. He won't be cheap enough for the Twins to sign.
  12. The lack of action at the deadline, combined with Falvey's contract up at the end of the season feels like a vote of no-confidence in this front office.
  13. Thielbar has put together a decent July. Hope he can repeat it in August and September.
  14. I would rather give the innings to this guy than Winder or Henriquez but it doesn't help much. If they want to improve the bullpen it will need to come from within the organization (Topa, Varland).
  15. They don't look for top pitching at the deadline because it is too expensive. They don't look for top pitching in the offseason because it is too expensive. They don't look for top pitching in the MLB draft because it is too risky. They don't sign top pitching as international free agents because it is too risky. Their plan for developing top pitchers is to grab a bunch of mediocre pitchers and hope some of them get better.
  16. Ober and Ryan are fine. Pablo is good enough. Who's the 4th starter for the playoffs? Who's the 5th starter for the rest of the season?
  17. Now would be a good time for the Twins to get something out of the Polanco trade. Hopefully Topa can pitch effectively down the stretch.
  18. Twins acquire a bad reliever who should be left off the postseason roster in exchange for a non-prospect more likely to be released than to play in AAA. I guess we'll see if Pete Maki can make chicken salad out of Trevor Richards. He couldn't out of Staumont.
  19. And $150M he would be walking away from if he opts in.
