  1. Varland faced 83 batters and had a 9.87 ERA as a reliever with a .859 OPS against. He was horrible, even worse than he was as a starter. Henriquez faced 82 batters had a 3.26 ERA with a .716 OPS against. He needs to improve his pitching vs LHB but was otherwise quite good. If you want a larger sample size, Varland's numbers in AAA are also significantly worse than Henriquez. Is stand by my assertion. Varland was clearly worse than Henriquez in 2024. It's not even debatable.
  2. And yet he ends up with 27.8 WAR (tied for 338th all-time) and 16.5 WAA. Those numbers are inflated by the leverage index WAR gives to relievers and they're still absolutely pathetic for a Hall of Fame candidate. His best season (3.8 WAR) isn't as good as Johan Santana's 7th best season (4.1 WAR).
  3. I'm still trying to figure out Billy Wagner's narrative. Is it "Choke in the postseason and then trash your teammates and blame them for your poor performance"?
  4. He was a 24-year old rookie last season and should be the youngest pitcher in the bullpen. He's younger than Mathews, Festa, Canterino, Varland, Travis Adams, and Christian Macleod. He's a few months older than Prielipp and Lewis. He did just fine in AAA and the major leagues. His youth and success last season mean it would be silly to cut him. If he gets just a little bit better they'll keep him for 6 more seasons.
  5. I would keep Topa in the big league bullpen over Funderburk but I also don't think depth chart speculation matters much. It's nearly impossible to keep the 8 guys at the top of your depth chart all healthy at the same time. I expect more than 1 pitcher on your list will be injured before the season even begins. I agree that the glaring need is a competent LHRP.
  6. I think the problem is they have already fallen too far down the slippery slope. They are overlooking literally dozens of better starting pitchers to induct fairly successful relief pitchers. I want the ceremonies honoring guys like David Cone, Kevin Brown, Dave Stieb, Bret Saberhagen and Johan Santana instead. Billy Wagner is a pathetic joke of a candidate compared to Johan Santana. I would vote for Roy Oswalt, Mark Buehrle, Tim Hudson, Felix Hernandez and Kevin Appier before I would vote for Billy Wagner.
  7. It's just 6 years. The extra 12 years of high performance for Rivera matter a LOT. I am not a fan of electing relievers. My list of Hall-worthy relievers is Wilhelm, Gossage and Rivera. Eck and Smoltz get in because they were also excellent starting pitchers. If you're not better than Gossage then I'm not interested.
  8. Ramon Laureano would be a fit in the outfield.
  9. I would rank them Morris, Raya, Soto, Hill but they'd all be in my top 10. I would trade Cory Lewis (for example) to get another Soto or Hill.
  10. Because $1.3MM is chicken feed when the minimum is $760k. I like Topa as a reclamation project better than Josh Staumont or Jay Jackson. It's a low risk bet with a medium reward payout.
  11. Topa has options. He doesn't have to take up any room on the 26-man roster. The bullpen will have Henriquez, Stewart and Tonkin as pitchers without options. They can stash Topa in AAA until the first injury.
  12. The roster as-is doesn't have a starter at 2B/3B (depending on where they play Royce Lewis) or a 4th OF. They need Castro more in 2025 than they did in 2024.
  13. High risk, high reward. They've had some bad success rates on their prep arms (Enlow, Balazovic, Gonsalves, Kohl Stewart) but everyone has bad success rates on prep arms.
  14. 717 OPS is good for a 102 OPS+. He had a 105 OPS+ the season before. He has an average bat and plays above average defense at 2B, 3B, LF. He gets labeled as a utility infielder but he's an everyday player for the Twins, clearly one of their best 9. He was named the team MVP for 2024 and made the All-Star team. If they can't afford that for $6M then they have completely mismanaged their budget. He has more than $6M worth of value to 20 of the 30 teams in MLB. It is a no-brainer to tender Willi Castro.
  15. Me neither. Are Carlos Correa and Royce Lewis redundant? They both hit righthanded and play infield.
  16. I thought this article was going to be about 4 players on other teams who could be non-tendered today but might help the Twins. That would be a much more interesting article.
  17. You cannot find players cheaper than Headrick or Henriquez. If they find someone better, they can release them at that moment without costing the team a dime. If Headrick spends the season in the minors the Twins pay him around $115,000. The only reason to cut any of these guys is you have someone else you like better for the roster spot. The Twins have open roster spots at the moment.
  18. I would not like Mateo instead of Castro but I'd be fine with adding him in addition to Castro.
  19. If you throw it in a hittable location, you won't walk many players.
  20. Unless they use Jax as a starter, in which case they definitely need to trade Paddack.
  21. That's a nice way to say he has inconsistent command of his fastball.
