Will we see Catcher at 11 or do they stick with pitcher? Seems like is an area they have taken catchers in the past.- 82 replies

I think the OP is spot on. They didn't sign Keuchel for a AAA role. He signed on because if he performed acceptably at the AAA level he was promised a role with the MLB team. So far he has been performing and OP makes sense that giving guys more rest down the stretch could help. That being said I still don't think I trust the new and improved Keuchel just yet and we can't afford to throw away games. I would like to see at least three more starts before adding him to the 40 man. If those go well then it seems like a worthy endeavor to take someone off the 40 man and put him on. Also not sure they need to go with 6 man rotation the whole way. They could just spot start Kuechel as I think he can go up and down 6 times or so. That might be enough to give arms a bit of a break without relying on the weakest arm every 6 days.

2023 MLB Draft Day 3 Thread
Dman replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
I did find it interesting that most teams in our division took a fair number of high school players especially early the in draft. Very surprised that Detroit went with 5 HS players with their first 11 picks. the most of any AL Central team. The Twins took 4, The Royals 3, Cleveland 2 with 1 JC and Chicago just 1 with 1 JC. I kind of thought Detroit would go college heavy especially for bats as they need help there but I guess Clark could be a fast mover so almost like a college pick? Detroit is getting competitive and I thought they would focus on fast movers but I guess like us they are building for the long haul. I didn't understand KC's draft at all and taking a high school catcher that high seemed very risky to me but if the bat works out it will be a good pick it is just that so often it doesn't. Surprising Cleveland didn't go as heavy on pitching in the top 11 as they focused on value bats in the later rounds. they did steal Clemmey the lefty pitcher I was hoping the Twins were gonne grab in the second round. They took two strong upside shots in rounds 2 and 2B on pitching and then focused in on position players as most other teams started focusing on pitching. Chicago seemed all in on fast moving college players. Guessing they will plan on trading players at the deadline and work on a quick restock of talent and see if it plays better this time around. Still a lot of talent on that team so I guess that makes sense. Like the Twins 6 of their 10 picks were pitchers. With a deep draft the whole Central got better heck all of MLB got better with a very solid top 100 this year. Gonna need our picks to work out well to weather that storm. Hoping for good health and fast development for this Twins draft with 10 more players to go hopefully they find a couple more gems in that mix.- 82 replies

2023 MLB Draft Day 3 Thread

I think the Winokur pick is intriguing. A 6'5" 60 runner with a strong arm and they have him at 55 power but he could easily be 60 IMO. Plate discipline and hit tool are the weakest link but still they rated average at 50 so if he can make some improvement's there they have a 5 tool player in the third round. That would be a huge pick if he turns out. Watching him in video though he kind of almost looks athletically clumsy or maybe a better way to say it is not smooth. It looks like he is still growing into his body but this is a big kid. Kind of a frame like Judge. Not as muscular yet but just a big guy. If he does figure things out at the plate and that's not easy, he is a first round talent taken in the third round. I think he might be a bit slow to develop as he fills out his body and adjusts to pro pitching but again a big "if", that hit tool hits he looks as good or better to me than Jenkins. I like that type of pick in the 3rd round. if he is Cavaco with the bat then no big deal. If he hits then he has all the tools to be an all star player. I think this pick takes time but really do love the potential. I hope he reaches it.- 82 replies

7 pitchers out of 11 picks that should go a ways toward restocking the lower levels. Need to take more tomorrow but I am pretty happy with what they have done so far. All the hitters with above average hit tools with maybe the exception of Winokur who we will have to wait and see. Loved the high school picks and now they just need to develop those young guys.- 126 replies

Looks like a senior sign to save some money at pick 7. I am happy with this draft so far. They got several high school players with good projection and a couple of college players with high floors and solid upside. From here on out I have no info on the players but will likely complain anyway. Hopefully they have drafted a bunch of difference makers.- 126 replies

Looking at his stats he has a good approach at the plate with as many walks as K's. My type of player because the bat should be so strong. Will have to work on the slugging but good get for the 6th round IMO.- 126 replies

Well I wanted a pitcher with a better fastball and I wanted high school players and the Twins gave me both with Questad. Looks like a lot of development needed and I don't see a plus secondary but the Twins wouldn't pick him this high if they didn't think they couldn't enhance his repertoire. I thought they were likely done with high school picks but I like this pick. Hoping for more arms.- 126 replies

2023 MLB Draft Day 2 Thread

Might finally be in pitcher mode. Guessing the Twins think they can add some velocity to the fastball and make the slider better. Seems like he might be a Joe Ryan lite type pitcher. Twins like pitchers that have control and he has a plus, plus changeup so at least one plus pitch to give him a floor as a reliever. Not a bad pick but was hoping for a bigger fastball there. MLB's board has this as a slight value pick for the Twins. At least we know the Twins aren't hunting for money like some clubs who took players way off the board.- 126 replies

2023 MLB Draft Day 2 Thread

I agree the Twins model must like the swing outcomes of both players. Still just a 50 hit tool grade as a high schooler is not a ringing endorsement to me, Kirilloff was rated 60 hit when he went and it hasn't been easy for him. Winokur very well might be better than that 50 grade but it still leaves me questioning the bat. Everything else looks like it will be plus so the Twins obviously think the bat will be fine and if it is they might end up with a 5 tool player in the 3rd round. Pretty nice get if it all works out. If the bat isn't good enough then they get nothing so there is risk there and mainly with the bat IMO.- 126 replies

The Twins draft team finally listened to me and got a guy who is a solid plus runner. Winokur kind of a typical Twins pick. Good power, great arm and some questions yet about the hit tool. I like that they went high school. They are going to have a monster class of outfileders coming up the ranks with all the INTL signings and now drafting two high school outfielders. They went shortstop heavy last year so nice to see them focus on the outfield. If Winokur can play center this pick makes me happy.- 126 replies

2023 MLB Draft Day 2 Thread

I too am hoping for arms but expecting bats. They generally favor bats through the first 5 picks and then start to go pitcher heavy except for the 2021 draft. That draft now decimated by trades they went pitcher heavy up top and I would have liked to see them do the same this year but most of the high octane arms are gone and it is going to be hard to sign High School kids unless you have the money to go over slot or they don't plan on going to college. There are some good bats floating around yet so I think they will go with bats and then do their typical off board small college starter picks and mix in falling bats or senior signs if they need more money to cover their high school signs. Hoping to be pleasantly surprised but most of the picks from here on out we won't have much info on and will have to wait until next year to see if they were good picks or not.- 126 replies

Don't look now but Miller has a .900 OPS so far in July. Granted really small sample size but it is nice to see some extra base pop from him. Maybe he can turn the corner here and get us all really excited. St Paul with a monster game and they did it with plate discipline and not selling out for power. Who are these guys? Was nice to see the bats back in St Paul. Also nice to see Varland get back on track. Some tough luck loses but the bats seem to be heating up.

If you go to mlb.com's draft site they have that info set up for everyone. Even have player rankings included. Tough part from here on out is that teams will have very different grades on players than the MLB.com site does. Once you are out of the top 100 all kinds of unknown players pop up. However this is a deeper draft than most so it might have more value this year.- 126 replies

I absolutely loved the first two picks. I didn't feel Soto was too far off from Meyer so to get Jenkins and Soto was about as good a one two as I could dream up. I wanted Clemmy in the second but I guess the Twins fell in love with Keaschall and if he is anything like Schobel then looks like a worthy pick there as well. Given what fell to them I don't think they could have played the first round any better. I absolutely love those first two picks. Also nice to get some high end high school players in the system as they tend to have high ceilings. Rounds three through ten are where the real scouting begins IMO. The Twins have found some really good players in the later rounds and I am hoping they find some diamonds in the rough today and tomorrow.

Yeah they seem to like trading for pitchers better than developing them. I didn't like the Schobel pick last year and all he has done is lead his league in HR's and battle for 2nd or third in OPS against Rosario. He is doing better than some of the 1st round picks so yeah Keaschall likely has similar traits and was unlikely to make it to their third round pick so I get why they grabbed him there. Still I feel somewhat justified in wanting Clemmy as that is who Cleveland took with their pick and they like to develop pitching. Pitching is also a system need and to find hard throwers you usually have to draft them early. I just think pitching would have been a better use of their draft capital there. They have a lot more info than me and they disagreed.

Not a fan of that pick but every team has their own board. Would have preferred Clemmy a hard throwing lefty which they don’t have in the system. They have plenty of second base types. Seems like a reach for something they don’t need. They need more pitching. Oh well at least I really liked the firs two picks. EDIT: yeah reading more at least he has speed and a really good plate approach I just think more investment in pitching would have been a better use of resources.- 130 replies

Twins were connected to White but he has had trouble throwing. Strikes so a bit more of a wild card if you ask me. Soto a bit unproven but likely can hit 96 to 98 and reach back for triple digits. I think they made the right choice. Several mocks I saw had Soto being taken in the 20’s. Twins might have been surprised he was still there. if White can learn to control his stuff and maintain the velocity he is the better pick as a hard throwing lefty. He is young but pitchers that can’t control their stuff has been something we have seen can be hard to correct for any team. I think Soto was the right choice there but that is just with the little info I have.

Really love the pick! A ton of potential and still very young. The Twins have been good at developing pitchers and he already has good velocity. Very excited to have a hard thrower with top of the rotation potential in the system. just two really, really good picks. Hoping they get another good one in the second round. Still good talent through the top 50 and then a slight drop off but good top 100 as well.
