  1. is that pitch selection or hitting mechanics? Parker Hageman’s gifs in the comments were especially helpful for me. http://twinsdaily.com/_/minnesota-twins-news/process-set-to-yield-results-for-kepler-r7105 The mechanical contrast between Kepler and Rosario were especially enlightening for me. I’ve been of the opinion that the Twins need to acquire a big hitting RF this offseason and let Kepler and Buxton compete for CF/4th OF. I wouldn’t wait to find out the answer to this question, i’d accumulate as much talent as I can and trade strength to improve weakness. If Kepler and Buxton both suddenly figure it out and you have two all-stars additionally, great! More is better. If Buxton needs more time to figure things out, Kepler is a very adequate CF with approximate league average bat. He’s certainly a valuable player you hold onto.
  2. in a more general way, analytics lead to the optimal launch angle concept which has been a driver in swing mechanics adjustments and pitch selection for countless teams and players. It predates this FO, but Dozier/Brunanski are prime examples of success here.
  3. seems like the "Scoop" definition could be a little narrow to answer the question asked. The quality of a first baseman's fielding play would be similar to that of a hockey goalie - how many thrown balls did the first baseman stop from getting past them? What was their "save percentage"? What is the WPA to the first baseman standing on their head? How many runs does save failures at first base cost you over a season? Frequently errors get attributed to the 3B/SS/2B, but what we want to know is how often does the first baseman stop things from getting out of hand. As Mike said, the data is out there, but the analysis is tricky. Scoops may be a solid leading indicator. Much like OPS is a leading indicator to contribution to runs created, Scoops might be a leading indicator to runs prevented. I wish I had time to dig in....
  4. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. The Twins have Jeff Pickler in place as the designated disseminator of data, but we can't really answer to the quality of the data or the reception by the players and coaches. That is significant change management and systems improvement. A team like the Astros with that type of mentality for several/many years has already been through that change management process. There is long history of conservatism in baseball youth, amateur, minor league, MLB, independent... it doesn't change quickly
  5. following the Brewers lead, pair Mejia with Odorizzi as a tandem and change who starts/who relieves but pairing them in starts could get you 7-9 strong innings per turn through the rotation and mitigate platooning.
  6. Need to commit to a direction and stick to it. With approximately 3 players on veteran contracts for 19 and 75-80 mil in salary, it seems like a stretch to make a push for contention in 19, doesn’t it?
  7. the motor city kitties lost 98 games. There’s gonna be some of those with that level of ineptitude.
  8. Development isn’t linear. That goes for players and coaching staffs. Just because Acala backslid and Pressly stepped up doesn’t mean one coaching staff excelled and the other screwed up. That being said, the rumor is Eddie isn’t sticking around the bullpen for next year. I’ve heard anecdotes that Eddie helped Rogers and Pressly with their secondary offerings quite a bit. I do agree the Houston has the better coaching staff already in place. I would caution that 2 months of results in only two players is evidence of it, or should affect Falvine’s attempt (if at all) of Gray. It sounds like more coaching changes are in process with the Twins and Falvine need to have faith that their solutions at Pitching Coach will be effective. Edit: to the subject. I’m a fan of getting a starter like Gray who could be very effective, front of rotation type, and outside of injury will be mid rotation type, still in Arbitration at least his last year. Trade for him, try to extend him right away.
  9. In RF I don’t value fielding as highly as BBRef. Kepler OPS .727 last year and has career .730. Cutch last year was .792 and career .859.
  10. I’m in the let Grossman go so you can aquire an upgrade over Kepler in right. Maybe Kepler is your starting CF or 4th OF depending if Buxton can get his poop in a group. I’ve heard Cutch as an option that I could get behind. Maybe a trade. If the roster is going to improve, there has to be some change
  11. Castro's knee makes me agree with you that he won't be putting on the tools of ignorance in '19.
  12. I think Pineda is enough of a question that the Twins sign a free agent for the rotation. Maybe Garret Richards, not front of the rotation type, but reduces your dependence on Pineda. If Pineda isn't ready for the start of the season, Mejia is there. If Pineda looks good, Mejia goes to the pen. The Pen needs an overhaul this season and I think one of Slegers/Gonsalves/Stewart gets converted to the Pen in a non-swing man type of role. It would be great to see a trade, but unfortunately the pieces you'd like to trade aren't really valuable, but the depth is so valuable.
  13. It’s a comedy and hilariously tragic
  14. Non-tender Grossman and trade-for/ sign a RF push Kepler into the 4th outfielder role/Buxton insurance. Non-tender Adrianza. There’s a bunch of middle infield FAs available this offseason. Forsythe as utility isn’t all bad. There’s options. The bullpen needs improvement badly, as do SS and 3b/1b but that’s another subject
  15. Just to play devil's advocate, what if the gun shots reported were fired by somebody else, and spooked Sano, who drove off to avoid the gun fire, and accidentally drove over the officer? What if the officer was shaking him down for a bribe? Lots of unknowns - I'm not a fan of Sano, with the stuff that went on last offseason, but it's too early to say what happened here.
  16. I'm a fan of the FO so far and generally like the direction they've taken the Twins. That said, they tend to come off as cold. baseball is a business, and you gotta be a little cold sometimes... but, it's still a business of people, as all businesses are. Case in point: Buxton. I understand the individual decisions made, but the cumulative treatment was bad for him and bad for the organization.
  17. http://m.startribune.com/twins-seek-pitching-upgrades-and-an-update-on-jake-mauer/463409553/ Jake left, so not really internal
  18. TK retired then took the role inside the org?
  19. https://www.mlb.com/news/paul-molitor-out-as-twins-manager/c-296881192 Per Bollinger: “It's unclear how many coaches the Twins will retain next season.”
  20. So you say that Molitor is friends with the Pohlad family?
  21. I'm not giving up on Gordon, I'm not counting on him to be a starter in 2019, or 2020 either. agreed on Dozier
  22. I’m not sure Gordon can be a big league starter at 2b or SS. Seems more likely a utility guy, but I’d like for him to get as much polish as possible b4 the twins make the call. Lewis looks like he could be a legit SS or 2b, but is at least 2 years away. I’m in 100% agreement with Platoon. Get SS shored up with Iglesias (or someone else) move Polanco to 2b. If Gordon surprises me, then there’s a great surplus of assets in a difficult to find up the middle position. No such thing as too many SS.
  23. I’m assuming they don’t go big on a starter, and instead go big on bullpen.
  24. I think the bullpen needs a couple impact signings My goal for 19 bullpen Kelvin Herrera Jeuris Familia Trevor May Addison Reed Taylor Rogers Gabriel Moya Trevor Hildenberger Matt Magill
  25. Pineda: 9 SO per inning? That’s the greatest pitching EVER! But seriously, I anticipate the FO going after a start and a couple bullpen pieces this offseason.
