  1. I think Mejia is a given to have a pitching role with the Twins. I’m not sure what that role is or if it has been defined in the organization yet Agreed with others, May, Reed, Rogers are given. Hildenberger needs to impress to not have his option exercised
  2. i disagree, Greinke only has 3 years left, free agency tends to be 4 years + for high end starters, no matter the age. According to mlb trade rumors, Twins are favored to sign JA Happ, who’s 36 and is projected to get a 3 year deal. I’d definitely prefer Greinki. Low prospect cost or bringing in additional prospects depending on how much salary the Twins take on.
  3. in a recent Doogie pod Falvey sounded like he was very involved in the process.
  4. if the Twins take on Grienke’s full salary, the snakes need to throw in a prospect or two, decent ones
  5. If your strategy to succeed is to invest heavily into analytics, then the coaching staff needs to be the conduit into the clubhouse. You can't say it's your strategy then dabble in it as a coaching staff. You must be "all in" on strategy. I like that the FO is finally implementing the strategy in earnest. I get the concern of work load changes between major leagues and minor, let alone, college - I was a vocal critic of Molitor's excessive usage of Pressly - I'm more concerned with the pitching coach and bullpen coach is if they can actually teach and provide valuable and new things to the staff. can they get through to the players? Time will tell, but at least at first blush, these two already will be evangelists of the strategy.
  6. its been like this for years, but agree for the likelihood of the hot stove season being slower longer because of the changing market for mid tier free agents
  7. adding two teams without reducing games means even greater gains
  8. agreed, but there are 3 other guys on that same plane that could replace Gonsalves, maybe it’s Littell... Maybe Pineda is still injured and the 5th battery is Littell and Slegers
  9. I get the FO side of the service time thing. I agreed with the Oncler when he kept biggering and biggering, that biggering was the right thing to do. However the Onceler failed to heed the Lorax that biggering needs to be sustainable. Consuming human beings’ output without considering their needs much like the other Bill James discussion.... James is right, just like Falvey is right, but they’re going about it wrong. Sustainability with human capital requires treating them well. I hope Buxton does a LeBron James and not a LeVeon Bell, but I don’t think Falvey can afford to find out which direction he goes, and will trade him.
  10. the ebbs and flows of rebuild, going down a similar path as the NBA and NHL are about to test your hypothesis. Of course i don’t hear much about growing popularity of any of MLB, NBA or NHL... which might prove your point.
  11. it’s not the “if”, it’s the “how”. Harper’s service time was managed on the front side, instead of getting demoted and not brought up for September with two weeks to go.
  12. He said it poorly, but if he were wrong, why do we have all of the different developmental leagues, drafts, free agency, and trade mechanisms to acquire new talent?
  13. Enjoy your retirement and cherish your kids Joe!
  14. Buxton is super 2, not arb 1, I get it. The point is that extra year came at the cost of trust. Money doesn’t fix trust.
  15. I think Buxton could be a superstar for someone else. If this was even a remote possibility why would Falvey screw around with arbitration timeline/eligibility? The value in an extended arbitration eligibility comes in lower contract, or return on trade. It might have been easier to negotiate a lower extension value after the team proposal being chosen by the Arbiter, and Buxton wouldn’t feel screwed by the Twins. 50 mil can fix a lot of things, but is trust one of them? If this is the plan now, why wasn’t it the plan in September? If it was the plan in Sept, why not bring him up to work with Rowson on the side and collect his two weeks? My guess is, the plan was to extend him or trade him, when extension talks failed, Falvey went down the trade route in August.
  16. Great exercise! It would be interesting to see trends over time. If certain teams over or under perform more than others over periods. You could do so much over 3 or 5 year periods!
  17. if he was cool like the qb he’d definitely be a starter And thanks a bunch for running sheet!
  18. you absolutely want buy in. Preparation is key to change, which doesn’t come in earnest without buy in. I’m with Mike though, it’s happening... get on the train with the org, or get left at the station.
  19. I’m proposing this trade to get Beede who’s K rate and BB rate look really good. All I know of Suarez is stats. He’s more major league ready than Romero, so should slot into the rotation right away, where Romero is still depth and would look to use him first with injury. I’m slotting Romero for ‘20 opening day rotation. Suarez is a decent mid to back rotation starter plus number 1 or 2 prospect in the system (plus some throw in guys that i couldn’t begin to identify) seemed like a decent return and Giants have a need for CF, so my hypothetical works in my mind.
  20. Free agent Jose Iglesias SS 3 years 21 mil Josh Donaldson 3B 1 year 20 mil Kelvin Herrera RP 1 year 8 mil Jeuris Familia RP 3 year 33 mil Andrew McCutchen RF 2 year 16 mil Trade Byron Buxton to Giants for a package including Tyler Beede, Andrew Suarez. The relationship is so hosed, they have to trade Buxton. C Garver 1B Sano 2B Polanco 3B Donaldson SS Iglesias RF Cutch CF Kepler LF Rosario DH Austin Bench Castro/Astudillo Adrianza Cave Rotation Berrios Gibson Suarez Odorizzi stacked with Mejia Pineda stacked with Gonsalves Bullpen Familia Herrera May Rodgers Reed Moya
  21. I still have fielding concern on the left side of the infield. Either Polanco or Sano but both... woof... lots of uncovered real estate
  22. mean or median? Mean weighted by innings pitched might get you three, more likely four. In the “plus” metrics where you lineup your players in order, Median seems like a better average. That might be 5 or 6 being that the mode number of starting pitchers used per team is usually 10 or 11 (prior to openers) and mean is usually 11+
  23. Hildenberger wasn’t prepared/conditioned to throw 100 innings. How many Quad-A type starters have rolled through the Twins rotation over the last decade that might have been perfectly serviceable or maybe even good stackers? 4-5 per season at least, that we’ve all gone “Geez why do they keep trotting Littell (or insert other name here) out there?” Those guys are starting 20 or more per season no matter what. Most every team uses 10+ starters per season. Maximize what you can get from your depth.
  24. I’m tendering Odorizzi. He paired with Mejia is a great stacking duo. It’s rare to see the 5th through 10th starters being 7-8 inning per start no matter how good the rotation. I like the idea. That being said, the rotation need at least 1 upgrade, and I don’t see it feasible to stack 3 rotation spots, mostly due to inflexibility with the bullpen
