Three Creative Options to Plug the Hole at Shortstop
Tibs replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Are any of these players+the cost it will take to acquire them a better short term solution than putting Polanco back at SS? Or are the Twins done playing him there? I love Chris Taylor. MLB Trade Rumors estimates him getting 4/64. I don't love him for the Twins at that contract. He's also 31 and has hardly played SS at the major league level. I'm also not convinced the Twins would be on paying someone like Taylor, who isn't a full time shortstop. $16 million per year and not be in on paying Story 6/126 for $21 million per year (again MLB Trade Rumors projection). I know we're talking about the Twins, but $5 million/yr for a much better player at a premier position is certainly something you can stomach. Nick Ahmed is one year younger than Andrelton Simmons and actually has worse career offensive numbers. If he's available for a random relief prospect, then maybe. After watching Simmons be a black hole in the lineup last year I'd rather put Polanco out there and deal with the defense. Not very interested in Wendle as a starting SS. Turns 32 in April. Again has hardly played SS at the major league level. His arbitration estimate is only $4 million. I think he is a good overall player, so if he's available for cheap I'd be interested. Again, not convinced it's a better solution than Polanco and looking to improve the team elsewhere.- 21 replies

I'm not a fan of a draft lottery at all. Especially in MLB where the draft is much less of a sure thing compared to every other league. I'm also not 100% convinced teams are actively tanking. I would agree certain teams aren't necessarily trying to win, but that doesn't mean they are tanking. Purposely tanking is bad for business. You're also betting that you hit on all of your top picks in the draft, which we all know isn't going to happen. Just look at how the Twins drafted when they were losing 90+ games every year. It wasn't good. I would be in favor of considering a salary floor.

Game Score: Twins 8, Cleveland 7
Tibs replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm sorry for wanting to see the catcher make a better effort to move his body in front of a ball with the tying run on 3rd with two outs in the 9th inning. That's literally all I said. I don't expect every single pitch ever to be blocked by the catcher. It was a horrible pitch by Colome. Everything else you added is putting words in my mouth.- 43 replies

Game Score: Twins 8, Cleveland 7
Tibs replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sure, that's fine. I understand not every pitch can be stopped. It was a terrible pitch by Colome. The problem is Jeffers seemingly made no effort to get his body in front of the pitch. I think the cause of that is how the Twins are having their catchers set up to receive the pitch. Just seems to me in that situation every effort should be made to not allow the tying run to score on a ball that gets by the catcher.- 43 replies

Tibs replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sure Colome didn't have his best outing, but Jeffers absolutely has to make a better effort to block that pitch that allowed the tying run to score. It was not a good pitch whatsoever and that's on Colome. However, Jeffers absolutely has to get in front of that ball. All he did was kind of move his body and throw his glove in front of it. You can't let a ball by you like that when there are two outs in the 9th and the tying run is on third.- 43 replies

Minor League Report (8/15): Smashing Sunday
Tibs replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Matt Canterino is an absolute madman out there pitching and I love it. I love how he sprints off the mound back to the dugout and makes sure he jumps over the foul line. Then he has a big smile for his player picture on milb.com It's great.- 26 replies

José Berríos Traded to Blue Jays
Tibs replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Very sad to see Berrios go. I'm definitely happy with the return. We could not have expected to get more than this. It's obvious Berrios was going to test free agency, so this is likely the best case scenario.- 304 replies

It's hard to choose sides here without knowing the incentives the Twins included on the 7 year $80 million offer. I don't blame Buxton for rejecting that as that's obviously not going to get it done. I'm at the front of the "Extend Byron Buxton" train. The first month of the season he was by far the best CF in MLB. He is the least replaceable player on the roster. The team is clearly better when he plays. I would go as far as to say I'm not against using Berrios extension money to get Buxton extended, if Buxton can stay healthy. As everyone knows, the problem is "when he plays" or "if he can stay healthy" is a huge caveat for Byron Buxton. Taking a peak at his baseball-reference page is rough. Buxton clearly wants a longer term guarantee, and the Twins are attempting to provide him that. It simply does not make financial sense for the team to guarantee him $100 million+ over 7 years with his track record. I want him extended as much as anyone. He is my favorite player to watch and I have been following him for a long time. The Twins will either need to shorten the years or be very creative with the contract for it to make sense.

Would You Do This Trade? José Berríos to the Mets for …
Tibs replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No way. For a couple reasons. I simply think Berrios is worth much more than that. I don't think that is even close to fair trade value for him. I think he provides much more value to the Twins even if he pitches next year and walks in free agency. Secondly, and this is related to the first point, if I looked at the roster correctly for next year, then the Twins currently have 3 SP on salary for 2022. Two of those starters are Berrios and Dobnak. Dobnak has been terrible and obviously Berrios is gone if he's traded. That leaves Kenta Maeda, meaning the Twins almost literally don't have a starting rotation in 2022 if Berrios is traded. That's also leaving guys like Ober, Jax, and Barnes out, but I don't necessarily have the three of them as locks into the rotation. It seems to me in that scenario, if Berrios is traded, then we might as well trade just about everyone else.- 46 replies

I think it's fair to question when we're a handful of years in now and this season all of a sudden starts so poorly. I read this and the article you linked on The Athletic by Aaron Gleeman going over the free agent signings since 2017. This along with Aaron's article are good breakdowns. I don't think it's fair to judge their free agent signings without also looking at how the rest of the league has performed in the same period. We all know relievers can be very volatile year to year, so free agent relievers carry inherent risk. It certainly seems like they have tried to sign the high end starting pitchers. Key word there is tried though. I'd still be very curious to see how the rest of the league has performed in free agent signings during that time period. I could be wrong, but to me it seems like a lot of teams now build from within or trades. I do agree with what Vanimal said about pitching prospects. I'd definitely like to see them be more aggressive with guys like Duran, Sands, Winder, Canterino, Enlow, Balazovic, Vallimont, plus any other SP prospect if they are putting good starts together. Obviously health permitting. The Twins seem to be at a point where we may need 1-2 of those guys in a rotation spot very soon. All those prospects I mentioned are 22-24.

Week in Review: Out of Their Depth
Tibs replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
With Arraez coming back, I really hope Nick Gordon keeps a roster spot. I know short sample size and all that, but he has looked great. He has dealt with a lot of injuries and different things the last couple years from a health standpoint. However, when he's been on the field he has shown he can hit. Someone with his former prospect status playing like he currently is has to stay on the roster. He is still 25 this entire season. If you haven't read The Athletic article Dan Hayes wrote about Nick Gordon recently, I would definitely suggest checking it out.- 64 replies

Minor League Report (6/6): Salvaging the Sweep
Tibs replied to Nash Walker's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Not sure why we're up in arms about a minor league game where the result 100% does not matter, but just from looking at the box score it is clear this was a bullpen game for the Saints. The Twins have had a lot of moving pieces on the pitching staff, which in turn means the Saints have had a lot of moving pieces on their pitching staff. Maybe Toby Gardenhire didn't want to have a quick hook on a guy when he already knew he would be using a big chunk of his bullpen that day. Maybe the Saints didn't have many options at pitcher because of previous days and all the moving pieces. -
Baseball’s Unwritten Rules Are Hurting the Game
Tibs replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think it's pretty lame to hit a homerun off a position player on a 3-0 count when you're up by 10 runs. However, when a position player is pitching, batters need to be up there swinging so they can put the ball in play and get the game over with. No one is striking out. We can't be telling batters to just give up. On the flip side of this, the Twins still have an at bat. There's no running out the clock in baseball. Obviously incredibly unlikely, but it's not like a team hasn't scored 10 runs in an inning before. We can't be asking the White Sox batters to give up and not ask the Twins batters to do the same.- 47 replies
