Scouting Twins Prospects: Gilberto Celestino
mikelink45 replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Thanks for the report. I like him. Based on what he did after leaving the team for AAA I think he learned his lessons well and will be ready to come back for much better results in the future. I take him over Jake Cave. -
Nice summary, you really showed the flaws and for the money that they want and will get it is not worth it. This is not the time where a SS will put us over the top. Use what we have - Polanco, Gordon, Martin, Lewis - piece it together for another year and see if the prospects can take over. Then invest in one very good SP and one very good RP. I can see teams paying a lot of money for players who are past their prime in this scenario. How has Lindor or Bauer worked out on big contracts? Mookie Betts played great his first year in LA - This year a 264 with 23 HRs output is not at the value of his contract Years: 12 (through 2032) Total value: $365 million Signing bonus: $65 million Average per year: $30,416,667 (11th in MLB) Contract details Everyone was excited about D J Mahieu - he signed a big contract and then batted 268 with 1.5 WAR. The Brewers were happy to sign Jackie Bradley, Jr and managed to get -0.7 WAR. Marcell Ozuna looked great then his personal issues damaged the Atlanta Braves like Trevor Bauer and the Dodgers. I am not a big contract guy. Paying for past performance makes no sense and MLB has really fallen into its own trap. Look at the Angels - Rodon, Trout, and now Ohtani will have monster contracts and no post season. Some sense has to prevail.

I enjoyed this essay. All four are good ideas, but Lewis is the one that worries me. I wish he could have gone to the AFL and got some diamond time in. I do not look for him this next year. I also question why Martin was not in the fall league as well as Richardson. I like your take on Jax. A RP from our minor leagues would be great.

I am shocked - this does not look like a real prospect list. Wallner is interesting, but so is Rooker and that does nothing to move the needle. I had to look back to see who we chose in past years and we usually have one or two real prospects and then question marks so this year is not too different. 2019, Royce Lewis, Jovani Moran, Luke Raley, Dakota Chambers, Zack Neff, Moises Gomez. In 2018 - Brent Rooker, Jaylin Davis, Travis Blankenhorn, Hector Lujan, Alex Robinson, Devin Smeltzer, Luke Raley, and Griffin Jax were the planned players. 2017 - LaMonte Wade, Tyler Jay, Chris Paul, Andrew Vasquez, Ryan Eades, Tom Hackimer, Sean Miller.

The 3 Best Moments For The 2021 Twins

Nice choices. Too painful for me to go back and try to find any others, but Joe Ryan's debut would be another highlight.- 8 replies

Reliving the Twins' Most Embarrassing Moments of 2021
mikelink45 replied to Allen Post's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
there is a season full of early hooks and BP meltdowns. I am not a Rocco fan. -
I was a Milwaukee Brave fan and my family journeyed to see them for one series every year. Loved all those great players. You are right - he and Yogi Berra at the Battle of the Bulge. What a career and what a life. Without the war he might have won 400, but Koufax and others got their days of fame while he just annually did great. So consistent that he was overlooked.

There are many guys who have succeeded without throwing 95+. On Baseball Savant I see the speeds of Tyler Rogers, Kyle Hendricks, and Zach Grienke with 4 seam speeds well below 90, yet they are very successful. What I see at the top is an amazing change in velocity from fastball to curve - DeGrom 99.2 to 83.3,, Cole 97.7 - 83.4. To my amazement Griffin Jax had and average 4 seamer at 92.6 and curveball at 79.9 - which should be really good. Is that what the team sees in him? John Gant has 92 - 74.7. Michael Pineda had a 90.6 4 seam and no curve ball, but an 81.2 slider. Bailey Ober was 92.3 with a 75 mph curveball. Joe Ryan is the slowest of all these pitchers - 91.2 and had 72.7 curveball for contrast. Lots of stats, but the results say Pineda Ryan and Ober were our top pitchers last year.

Not an ACE, but the way Baldelli handles pitchers an ACE would not work here. I just want a steady strong and relatively young arm with experience.

I enjoyed this, but would not bring Cruz back. I have proceeded through the misery and disappointments that aging creates and I think we have enough history to know that Cruz is on the downward slide - as much as I loved to see him in the lineup, it is time to more on. So glad you stuck a pin in the Simmons is an elite fielder balloon! No more needs to be said. Pitching is everyone's guess. I really want the stress on our young prospects - not Jax, Gant, Barnes - they are not in my SP rotation thoughts, but there are many others in the minors who are ready and need to grow in the bigs. Old pitchers like Greinke, Kershaw are not my wish. I want a young steady player with years ahead of him - kind of like Berrios. Oh well.

Houston, Does the Central Have a Problem?

and the difference between 89 losses and 90 losses means???? Bad is bad, if they played against better teams they could have achieved the magical 90. ?- 16 replies

Who Can the Twins Deal?

True, but if I was a pitcher I would not come to the Twins if they are absent Polanco and/or Buxton.- 74 replies

Who Can the Twins Deal?
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am not pushing for him, just using him as an example of how easy it is for teams to fill the corners in the OF, DH, and 1B. That is why their value is so low. However, before you knock C. J. - he had a 3.4 WAR last year. Only Buxton and Polanco had more for the Twins.- 74 replies

Who Can the Twins Deal?
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am not advocating their trade, just assessing trade value and they are the most valuable non-pitchers we have. Young, under control, middle diamond positions. DH/1B/LF/RF are not positions of high value. So how much do we want to get a really good pitcher?- 74 replies

I just cannot be excited about these three - Stroman is the only one I would sign. Kluber is at the end of the road and we do not have to continue to offer long term care to aging pitchers. Thor has too many injuries and just cannot be counted on the way Berrios did making every start.

Houston, Does the Central Have a Problem?
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
You made me laugh. Of course we have a problem. Winning 90 in a division in which teams 2 - 5 are all below 500 is not a monumental feat. When the Rays win 90 in the American East that is a feat. There is something that impacts the central teams when they get into the post season and maybe it is the fact that they are not hardened by the competition during the season. We were 13 - 20 versus the East, 37 - 39 in our own division, and 13 - 20 versus the West. And 10 - 10 interleague. We often fool ourselves and think we are better than our record - even this year that might be true.- 16 replies
