This note from MLB.com is worth thinking about - "Archer hasn’t lasted longer than five innings in any of his 25 starts this season. Early on, he was successful in short stints, but lately his short outings had started to tax the bullpen. Archer was 2-3 with a 3.14 ERA in his first 14 starts and the team was 7-7 in those outings. In 10 starts prior to Saturday, Minnesota was 1-9 in Archer’s outings and he was 0-4 with a 6.23 ERA."

Matt's Top Prospect List (August) + Writeups
mikelink45 commented on Matt Braun's blog entry in 80MPH Changeup
Prielipp too hign, Varland and Wallner too low. The last ten are just names to me. And the second 10 are really a lot of disappointments and question marks. Truly a list that lacks what we are used to, but hopefully they will light things up and suddenly grab attention. Balazovic is the biggest disappointment on the list along with Sabato ranking so low on a list that has so many unknowns.- 5 comments

Minor League Report (9/10): Wichita Wins on a Walk-Off

Like others in this post. I wonder why Wallner isn't brought in to replace Kepler or fill the DH.- 8 replies

That was my take too. I can't figure out how he gets credit for a job after he starts out like that. I still don't trust him

When you expect them to be bad, what is there to complain about? When we are told they are good, when the team expects to make the playoffs we have the right to expect more from everyone involved. The Twins are in third place - it is not the fans fault.

I disagree - this is not about pulling pitchers when they are going well, this is about the end of a pennant race where you cannot allow a pitcher who is failing to stay in and give up more runs.

Where was our manager when Bundy was getting blasted? He has now left Ryan in for 10 runs and looks the other way when Bundy is getting blasted in a game we need. Does his spreadsheet say that starters can't go six, but they have to go 4 or more? Sanchez did great, Bundy did not. The bats and team really fought for this one, but the hole was too deep. On the total standings list, we are now 16 - the top of the bottom half of teams. Lucky for us the Guardians and White Sox are 14 and 15 - the bottom of the top half! What a division. The Guardians were a mess in the field, it was like playing the no-glove white sox. Miranda looks better and better as the season goes on. He has star potential and Correa has heated up at the right time. If only Arraez could get out of his second half funk. I worry that his launch angle adjustment to get power in his game is lifting his dink and dunk flies too much and allowing them to be caught. Cave - 205/267/397 is not someone we should be starting - how about giving Wallner the spot and maybe he can crank a couple out.

The Twins Top Prospects in 2024 Will Be...
mikelink45 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Miller and Prielipp still have to do some proving in the minors before I would put them top five. The other three are looking really promising. I am bothered by Rodriguez having a knee injury. We have too many injury prone players - Buxton can't stay in the field, Lewis can't get onto the team, Kiriloff lasts for short stints along with Larnach. I hope this trend can end soon.- 23 replies

The 2022 Twins Are Now Built For October
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Ted, you keep trying to get us all on a positive vibe, but the team works against you. So we are going to get all these injured Twins back and they are going to have their timing back with them. Sit out 60 days and you are ready to go? This time of year there is no time for rehab. We have already seen Maeda taken off our hoped for list. Jeffers keeps moving further back like Larnach. Polanco and Buxton have already demonstrated that whatever nagging injuries they have it is limiting their production. Mahle is not coming back, Paddock is not coming back. We have already had a season of losing to teams that have a chance for the WS. How is that going to stop? Lopez is doing his Pagan imitation and the BP is overworked. Rocco has not adapted as the season progressed. I hope you are right, but from my chair it does not look good.- 41 replies

I hope this helps the next generation of fans - as one of the really old fans I am delighted. Anything that creates action and reduces the time of the game is very welcome to me. For skeptics - let me say that MLB games were 2 1/2 hours during the days of Maury Wills and other base stealers. Stealing bases is not going to make the game longer. This is great, if only the robo ump was put in too! Next - limit tv commercials. Have them figure out a new way of getting advertising - fun banners at the bottom of the screen, but keep the commercial break to 1 minute.

How Dire is the Twins Catching Situation?
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The amazing thing is that a year ago we thought we had the best catching situation in the majors - Rortvedt, Jeffers, Garver - now all three are on the IL and none look like they can really improve our situation. We have to hope Jeffers continues to develop and someone from the minors - not Hamilton, can rise to at least back up.- 36 replies

Twins 4, Yankees 3: Fourth Time's the Charm
mikelink45 replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hamilton - caught stealing, Stumbled at third, and picked off. Some addition to the team! He and Davis are an example of a FO weakness when it comes to picking up and even just picking players to add to the roster.- 32 replies

Is Joe Ryan Who We Thought He Was?
mikelink45 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
First I must reiterate that Covid has a long term impact if he had a bad case - I know from experience and some heart procedures. Second, he is still a rookie and the real question is whether he is open to change and third, do we have the coaches that can help him change? I expect improvement and also recognize that the team really put the pressure on him to make him our opening day starter and matching him against the best that other teams start. I expect next year to have Gray, Mahle, Ryan as our top three. Then I would love to see Ober and Varland, but who knows. -
Nicely done. This really does show our ineptitude against class teams. But the fact our division mates can do so much better really raises the question of why? We know the Yankees have a psychological edge over us, but the Dodgers and Astros do lose periodically. Is there something management can do? We won the last game with Garlick leading off while in a slump, Correa at DH instead of the field, No Arraez. Lopez doing his meltdown act, Fulmer being mediocre. And we won. Maybe the scrubs are the answer. Sit the regulars and let the guys who are desperate to survive play. (Just kidding).

Twins 4, Yankees 3: Fourth Time's the Charm
mikelink45 replied to David Youngs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It was so pleasant to get this win. It is one of four so perspective is needed. We are now 2 - 15 against the Yankees, Dodgers, and Astros and both wins are against the Yankees. Is it just me or: Do you get the Pagan shakes when Lopez enters the game? I am enjoying Gordon at 2B more than Polanco It feels like they are pushing Hamilton to get into each game even though he has nothing since we got him. Hamilton with -0.1 WAR for us and Austin -0.`1 WAR for us and 6.71 era might not have been the best adds for September. We won despite a very questionable line up. It felt like Rocco did not think we could win and then they did anyway.- 32 replies

How Dire is the Twins Catching Situation?
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is a mess and reflects a lack of real planning for the long term. Sanchez was a hoped for solution, but his history and pending free agency meant he was short term. Leon is dreadful at the plate - can we just have him bunt every time. Are there any minor leaguers that are close? I thought I read about two on TD recently.- 36 replies

Short Starts Are Not a Minnesota Twins Thing
mikelink45 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I love this - Ted continues to be the Twins cheerleader finding ways to justify what they are doing, but when you do the same thing that everyone else is doing and it doesn't work I think it is time to change. I loved Danny Gladden saying to Falvey last night - shouldn't we be teaching how to pitch to the lineup a third time. What are the statistics for overworked BPs? How much can you use the BP pitcher and have them be effective? How many BP arms can you rely on? When you go 4 you have more pressure on the BP which is usually a few good arms and then a lot of failed starters. I posted on another thread - Archer is 2 - 7 and the team is 8 - 16 when he pitches. Bring on the BP!- 86 replies

Twins 1, Yankees 7: Twins Strikeout in Game 2
mikelink45 replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Two stats - we are 789 - 1174 versus the Yankees in franchise history. 40 %. In the playoffs we are 2 - 16. Out inability to beat the Yankees is not a new phenomenon nor is it SSS. Versus the Yankees, Astros, Dodgers we are 1 - 16 (yes we are playoff ready). since the all-star game we are 3 - 16 on the road according to the post game show. Maybe our strategy is not working.- 27 replies

Yes he should have pitched more - two games, BP already used up from the last few games - Trevor Megill and Pagan ready to throw HRs if Lopez doesn't. I was listening to Falvey talk to Dan Gladden tonight. Sorry, but the third time through the lineup might be less productive, but so is going to the BP a third time each game. Once again the offense is weak - Arraez, Gordon, Miranda, Celestino and nothing. At least we get to participate in the Aaron Judge HR contest.

I am not judging Enlow by this year which is not good, but the previous years with 4.39 and 4.75 eras and Whip near 1.6 each year. That is not a top prospect showing. I have never been impressed with him and his potential.
