  1. Mom's bringing the heat, signalling that he needs first-round money. Savvy veteran move by a parent.
  2. Good point, but...I'm struggling to remember the last time Baldelli had a 4-5 run deficit to worry about. Maybe he'll get to make that mistake himself but he's not had many opportunities so far. What a season.
  3. Yeah, and it looked like his head-first "slide" was from a starting platform in an Olympic pool, and he did the last 20 feet of the double through the air and then sliding on his belly. That was an incredible finish to that run. Replay of the hit from my living room: Ball takes second hop in outfield Big Dog says to Mrs Big Dog "That's a double" Screen shows Buxton doing Superman dive/slide into second Big Dog giggles uncontrollably Steve Stone says "For any other player in the majors, that's a single, but it's a double for Buxton" Big Dog rewinds DVR to show slide to Mrs Big Dog. Three times.
  4. Thanks, I was remembered that story but had never seen the clip. I remember hearing something about Tony Oliva doing it, but I'm not sure he got a hit. I'm far more sure that there's nothing about it on Youtube.
  5. I might rather have an actual outfielder in the outfield, personally. It will be fun to see how long this experiment last. I'd love to see Tyler get a real chance somewhere.
  6. Larnach seems to be a real outfielder as well.
  7. I think Kohl Stewart is going to take the next step this year and become a solid major league pitcher. Just a feeling. Slow to develop, but keeps working and getting better. I don't disagree with the current ranking (because what do I know) but I'd bet he moves up a ways by the end of the year. And if he doesn't because a bunch of other guys improved a lot I'm ok with that.
  8. Yeah, I remember (or mis-remember) the dialogue as being he's a risky choice for a starter, but at least he'll be a high quality reliever. ...still waiting...
  9. Tony O's OPS+ for his first eight full years (including his first knee injury) was 141. He lost almost all of the next year, then played 3 full seasons with an OPS+ of just over 100, playing on one leg. Then he played a half-year. Give the Twins, say, 5 more years of Tony with a normal decline and I think those early '70s teams go farther. Liriano's a good choice, but I don't think his arm injury could be chalked up to bad luck. More like inevitability. I would put Mauer's concussion second and Morneau's third, but both were pretty devastating to a team with some chances. Kirby's eye was tragic, but it wouldn't have mattered to the team's standings- that whole era was pretty tragic. I just wanted Kirby to have a shot at 3000 hits.
  10. The only thing I can add to this post is...whatever.
  11. Totally agree with above sentiments- when I said I liked what I heard and found it encouraging, I meant some level of growth/maturity in Stewart and an apparent and probably dramatic change in how the organization developed young pitchers. Both changes are potentially very good news for the future.
  12. OK, that was an awesome post. Thanks. Love what Stewart said- all aspects of it. Really interesting and very encouraging.
  13. As I said, efficiency is important. This would be the antithesis of efficiency. But I agree, who cares?
  14. It's important to be efficient, but who cares if you are the team that spends the least to win 80 games? I am really underwhelmed so far, and barring a significant trade I don't see how this team is going to take the next step, other than our traditional two-tiered strategy of Wait & Hope.
  15. OK, that split-screen idea is incredibly fun. Thank you.
  16. If you are in the batter's box and you take one hand off the bat on your followthrough you could just about hit the umpire. The catcher can't get far enough back.
  17. Amen. A team is penalized if a batter interferes with the catcher on a ball in play. Shouldn't the team be penalized if the batter hits a catcher in the head with his bat? I'm looking at you, Adam Jones.
  18. I get that Gordon is unlikely to be a big star, but I'm hoping he can be Greg Gagne for a while. That would be ok with me. I would like that regular top 10 in Def-WAR that Gagne had, but I'd rather have the two WS titles.
  19. If you don't think Gardy "showed fire" you weren't paying attention. #8 all-time in ejections. Famous incident during the Angels playoff series when he went to the mound, signaled in a reliever, and then had Mientkiwicz say "Isn't Kyle Lohse on the team any more?"- went ballistic. Fire- check. Playoff results- unchecked.
  20. Not implying that makes anyone an awful person. Just saying that if that were my multi-million dollar player and potential franchise cornerstone I would prefer that he not get into those situations. Regardless of any values or ethical judgement, it's a risky situation.
  21. Well, I still wish he was in Fort Myers, and I still wish he wasn't in clubs at 3 am. That's independent of what happened or didn't happen last night. Hopefully the summer nutrition work hasn't completely fallen away from him. If he takes any supplements this winter I hope they come from Fort Myers. But again, he gets to live his life and I get to wish my wishes.
  22. I really wish he were spending this off-season in Fort Myers, and he were spending the hours around 3 am at home in his bed. He gets to live his life, but I get to wish my wishes.
  23. OK, that works. Let's guarantee that as an average performance over the next 6 years and sign that long-term deal!
  24. bonus points for using the phrase "squinty hope" in a sentence!
