Minnesota Twins 2026 Position Analysis: First Base
Nshore replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It'll be interesting to see what Zoll does with some of these messy situations that amount to baseball malpractice. There are multiple players - Outman is another one - who shouldn't be anywhere near the ML roster. Is Zoll part of the problem or part of the solution?- 43 replies

I'm still rooting for Roden. He wouldn't be the first player to go to a new team and flat line before getting his feet on the ground and taking off. I'd love to see the the athleticism of Roden and Martin give a charge into this team for a full season. .

They aren't playing for anything this year. You might take that in a bad way. However, it's kind of freeing. This is supposed to be entertainment. Give the kids some experience. Who would you rather go to the ballpark to see - Wallner, Larnach and Lee or Gonzalez, E-Rod and Culpepper? Calvin Griffith had to force his manager to play a young Rod Carew. Free the baseball talent!

Whatever happens, I hope they ditch the Wheel of Fortune batting order of the previous regime. Real baseball teams don't seem to do that. Everything in its proper place.

I'll probably be eviscerated for this comment. But these days I think back with appreciation to the Calvin Griffith/Sherry Robertson/Jim Rantz days. Obviously Calvin had his issues, but he was an owner who was a baseball man to his core. He understood the game. Killebrew, Carew, Oliva, Blyleven, Kaat, Puckett - Hall of Famers who could compete with anyone. Now, I'm thankful when a new year comes and the Twins haven't moved out of state.

Grading the Minnesota Twins' 2025-2026 Offseason
Nshore replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If they're serious about "contending" as their boss keeps saying, 2 or more months of slow footed Lee won't get them there. I think people are being pretty optimistic about Culpepper. He probably needs more than a couple months. And there's some thought out there that he's not even a SS - at least at the ML level. I'd have invested a healthy chunk of the budget in a solid SS, but it's too late now anyway.- 66 replies

Grading the Minnesota Twins' 2025-2026 Offseason
Nshore replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Most surprising to me is that they watched the underperforming Brooks Lee last year and didn't do something - anything - to upgrade the position for 2026. A good SS can give a lot of bang for the buck and really help a young pitching staff. They already know Lee is a step too slow.- 66 replies

I know we should normally keep politics out of baseball, but these aren't normal times. If you happen to be standing in the wrong place in Minnesota now and legally carrying a firearm, you can be called a terrorist and summarily executed by the federal government. You can be pulled out of your home or car and handcuffed, beaten and jailed for no reason at all. And those in Greater Minnesota who think they're safe from all this couldn't be more wrong. One thing the Pohlads could do is forfeit one of the home games in protest of what's happening to this state and country. It would take uncommon courage for billionaires to actually take a moral stand. But the danger is profoundly urgent and effects every single one of us and our families.

When Buxton started out, he and Sano were to be the foundation of turning the be Twins into a consistent winner. As it turned out Sano wasn't good, and Buxton couldn't stay on the field - so the Twins didn't win. In spite of that, Buxton scored a 100 million dollar contract, which he probably wouldn't have gotten anywhere else. Now he has a good year and maybe wants to jump ship because the team isn't a winner. The "moral code" thing makes me a little nauseous.

Whoever their SS is, it should be some younger player with a potentially higher ceiling, not a guy like Kreidler or Fitzgerald. I'd hate to see the Twins become a team where hope goes to die. If they're going to become one of the development teams for the rest of the league, embrace who they are.

3 Free-Agent Fits For Minnesota Twins In The Bullpen
Nshore replied to Cody Schoenmann's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Last year Falvey demonstrated his urgency and said "what the heck, might as well have a first baseman", and signed France during spring training. The Twins'll probably have 7 open spots on their 40 man roster the day before the opener.- 34 replies

The Twins Seem to Hire Well, But Can't Actualize Impact
Nshore replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I liked it better back in the prehistoric days when I was younger, and fans barely knew who the manager's staff was. It was all about the players, and the players being good enough and performing well enough to win. Pretty much still the case. Most likely the established millionaire players have their own support team for every single thing right down to the food they eat.- 24 replies

My mother, who knew nothing about baseball, ran into Kirby in a grocery store. She knew who HE was though, and walked up and shook his hand. Kirby was a superstar who drew even non baseball fans into the sport. I convinced her to go with me to Game 7 - which was the first Twins' game she had ever been to. She was kind of in shock - the crowd was like sitting next to a jet engine.

The enormous kitchen, and top of the line coaching and nutrition the Tigers shoved into whiner Paddack didn't make him a better player though.

Between you and another commenter I consider myself soundly corrected on this point. I forgot about Matthews - probably because he hasn't been very good. However, I still think the Twins should do a lot more.

Trey Yesavage began 2025 in the lowest level of the minors. The BlueJays aggressively promoted him so that now he's performing brilliantly on the brightest stage in baseball - the World Series. That would never, ever.....ever happen with the cautious Twins. What can Shelton do to change that culture?

After the dysfunctional situation in Pittsburgh in which he was not given the tools to succeed and from which he was eventually fired, why on earth would he apply for what is virtually the same toxic job in Minnesota?

I see poor Derek is a bourbon drinker. It'll be time for him to go when the bottle becomes visible in the dugout during games. Shelton won't have much control over roster construction. So the players he gets from the minor league system better be developed to a razor sharp edge. That puts focus on the performance of the director of minor league operations, which IMO to this point has been rather underwhelming.
-
Speaking of "uncomfortably complete reinventions", I think some of these guys, including Ober, would benefit from an expansion of the "bullpen days" approach to managing pitching. Limit pitchers to three innings in two out of the five start cycle (or more). Plan for it in roster construction from the start of spring training. Ober doesn't have the strength to last a full season as a traditional starter.

Watching the WS and a great Blue Jays team go toe to toe with the LA Dodgers (the best team money can buy) it's very hard to believe the Twins beat them in the playoffs just a couple of years ago. So things can change fast. But looking at the Twins' 40 man roster - they obviously have an awful lot of work to do - and quite possibly weak ownership support to do it. So....their next WS window will come when there are flying cars.

BREAKING: Twins to Hire Derek Shelton as Manager for 2026

Shelton is about to go through the baseball version of The Revenant. I just hope the man survives. He can always take shelter inside a dead horse.- 250 replies

How Low Could the Minnesota Twins' Payroll Go?
Nshore replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How low? As low as the German U boat in Das Boot. Each game, a fan will be picked at random out of the stands to play first base.- 63 replies
