  1. I heard another team's TV announcer say that in general Twins hitters have a reputation for poor pitch recognition. If it's true, I wonder if it's something the Twins are failing to do in their development system or just a lack of talent.
  2. Between Festa and Ober, the experiment in Wilt Chamberlain tall pitchers hasn't gone too well. Maybe they can delete that one from the computer models.
  3. Pohlad said they would contend this year - but I'm not sure he specified for what exactly. I was at the opener, and with the lousy weather it was a near death experience. I thought the crowd was pretty good despite the conditions and despite the off season pessimism. I think people want to get out there and enjoy the Twins. But the Twins have to show a pulse and play some decent baseball. And as many of us have been saying all along, in order to do that they need a major personnel shake up.
  4. Zebby Matthews was known for absolute pinpoint command in the minors and looked unstoppable. The Twins got ahold of him and now he's a total mess. What did they do to him?
  5. The Twins are the baseball version of "Apollo 13" - "What do we have on the ball club that's good?"
  6. 90% of the game is half mental. Somebody needs to convince Abel that every game is a revenge game against the Phillies. Abel is only 24. Even Viola and Santana took their lumps when they first came up. He'll be alright - I think.
  7. When the Twins had Sonny Gray, he made a point of making it a goal for the rotation to pitch deeper into games that year - and they did. How much of it is mindset and how much is talent, who knows - probably a lot of both.
  8. Even though the performance of the Twins' bullpen hasn't been stellar so far, they've still been better than I expected - and are trending in a positive direction. May the force of the Easter Bunny be with Latroy Hawkins in his quest to accomplish the impossible - a solid Twins' bullpen.
  9. Festa seems to be sliding toward needing an arm transplant or something. Too bad.
  10. When I was a kid, my mother used to pack me a paper bag lunch to take to the Twins game. Seems like completely out of another time. I guess it was. Enjoy your shawarmas.
  11. In the off season it was obvious the Twins needed to rip the bandaid off and get more athletic in the outfield to generate some fan interest and at least start a transition. IMO that meant starting Martin/Roden and E-Rod, and jettisoning Larnach, Wallner and Outman. Instead they kept the old guard. Outman is "out of options" - as I'm afraid are many of the fans. They will stay home.
  12. There are some players who relish the high impact moments and want to swing the bat and take their shot and whatever happens, happens. Then there are those who appear to tense up and are knee shaking terrified. For whatever reason, Wallner fits firmly into the terrified group.
  13. Rod Carew was one of the greatest hitters OF ALL TIME, and there were still ongoing complaints about his glove and lack of power. It's always something. The Twins have a million problems, but Keaschall isn't one of them.
  14. With regard to all the mistakes, in defense of Shelton - and Baldelli - IMO it's almost impossible to manage your way out of low IQ baseball. The solution is to find better ballplayers.
  15. Wallner's strikeout with the bases loaded is a signature at bat for him. Just when the situation calls for him to have an aggressive "eye of the tiger" approach, he crawls into a passive shell and barely takes the bat off his shoulder. It's happened time and again. The man needs a sports psychologist.
  16. Wallner could shut up skeptics like me. Just put up Lou Gehrig style numbers - maybe 35 hrs. and 140 RBI's. I don't ask for much.
  17. In the early games I saw in Ft. Myers, Lewis often seemed to be his usual befuddled self and was sometimes missing pitches by half a foot. By the end, he was at least putting the barrel of the bat on the ball more often - one faint glimmer of hope.
  18. If the Twins aren't careful, the main question about the fans at Target Field will be: "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"
  19. Players like Lewis or Lee, etc. are probably very used to naturally being one of the top players or THE top player all the way up from high school. Then all of a sudden they aren't even league average or barely hanging on to a job at all. It must be quite a shock to their egos. It might be the first time they've had to dig down deep and really work at it. We'll see if they have what it takes.
  20. And now a word from Ty Cobb: "Baseball is a red blooded sport for red blooded men. It's no pink tea, and mollycoddles had better stay out. It's a struggle for supremacy, a survival of the fittest!". Have a nice season.
  21. I've been seized by what is probably going to end up being delusional optimism about Brooks Lee. He looks better this spring. It's obvious he's working hard at it. I hope it pays off.
  22. Josh Bell is built like an NFL linebacker. He and Wallner could take on the entire opposing team in a bench clearing brawl. So we have that going for us, which is nice.
