Pitching should be the strength of this team. We've got more legitimate depth than we've had in a long time, especially with near MLB ready pitchers. The offense and defense in the real question mark. If our big 3 of Buxton, Correa and Lewis can stay healthy for long chunks of the season we might be ok. I still think we need one more big bat, most likely at first base. Maybe if we have new owners by the trade deadline, and we're in a position to go for it, they make a splash and grab an impact bat. As always, healthy will be a major factor in the teams success this year.

I think Paddack could provide some real value this year. I'm thinking maybe he pitches well the first couple months, until Festa looks ready, and then Paddack suddenly goes on the IL for a while giving his rotation spot to Festa. Maybe Paddack comes back in the bullpen if there's an opening. Maybe another team comes calling and offers us some kind of trade that would benefit the major league club at the trade deadline. Paddack will be doing all he can to pitch a career year as he's entering free agency and wants to land that lucrative deal

If this is ever going to happen he's going to need to stay on the field for the whole season. If we could ever get just one full year of Correa, Buxton and Lewis together, we might have a shot.

2025 Twins Prospect Previews: Billy Amick
LambchoP replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Would be nice if he can develop into a power hitting first baseman. We need a long term solution there. Seems most of our upper level prospects are pitchers. Aside from the big 3 of Jenkins, Rodriguez and Keaschal, it'd be nice to see the Twins develop a few more impact bats. -
I could see it going either way. And average defense with Miranda/France as passable 1st baseman. A good 2nd baseman in Lee. Correa is elite and Lewis should improve at 3rd. Castro looked good pretty much everywhere Or it could be a mess if Julien is our second baseman. France is a butcher at first. Correa gets hurt and we have no viable SS.... hopefully it doesn't come to this. I still think they should have signed a backup SS like Iglesias. Dude hit like .315 last year and would be a better glove than Castro. At least our outfield defense should be elite. Especially if Buck and Vader are healthy and playing. Not many balls are going to land between Bader in left and Buxton in center:)

After what he did last year I think SWR has earned the #5 spot, unless his spring is disasterous or something. This leaves Festa and Mathews first up as reinforcements. I think it's probable that Paddack is injured or ineffective enough to be replaced by mid season. I'd like to see consistency with Festa and Mathews in St Paul first, but I think they'll both make MLB starts at some point this year. St Paul should have an interesting rotation with Festa, Zebby, Adams, Morris, Raya and Lewis. As others have said, Varland is cooked as a starter and should let it fly as a reliever out of the pen.

It's got to be so hard jumping three levels and playing with three different teams in one year Morris and Zebbys numbers had to have suffered a little bit because of the added stress. I'm excited to see what both of them can do in a full year in AAA. The 2022 draft has the potential to be one of the best drafts in recent memory. If even some of these high minors pitching prospects work out the Twins should be in a good position for a lot of years. Festa, Zebby, Morris, Adams, Raya, Lewis, Culpeper, Prelipp, Canterino... The future looks bright :) Now we just need to draft some impact bats!

That's true, I wonder what it would take in order to complete a trade. I know Castellano was their minor league pitcher of the year in '24, but he only reached AA. Seems he's still at least one year away, which makes me think it'll be hard to keep him in the pen all year if he struggles since we will have other viable options in AAA.

It would be amazing to have a lefty handed home grown ace in our rotation. That should be the goal. If he can't seem to sustain a starters workload though, a lefty handed hard throwing closer wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Either way, Prelipp should be fun to watch progress this year. Hopefully he can stay healthy and put himself in the best position possible for a late season call up
-
I think a full-time role in the bullpen is the best use for Varland. A great spring training would help, but even if he has to start the year in AAA, having him as relief depth would be very valuable. Relievers are especially volatile year to year and injuries happen. Have him let it rip in the pen and maybe he turns into a high leverage weapon. He's cooked as a starter, especially with the SP depth we now have

As long as Rocco isn't so RH obsessed that we get more lineups with Vasquez or Martin as our DH JUST because they hit RH....

Best odds are probably on Castellano since he needs to stay on the roster if we want to keep him. I still think we should work out a trade so we could send him back down to AA or AAA. Eeles would be a fun pick to. If he keeps hitting like he did last year, he could be a great utility guy and Castro replacement next year. Canterino in the pen and Severino at first base could happen if they both can bounce back and if there are injuries. The fact that the Twins haven't given up on either of these guys shows that there is still promise. Keaschal by mid season hopefully. Not because of injury or poor performance hopefully, but because he's performing way to well in AAA to not get the call. Can't wait for games to start! Wish spring training games were televised though.

I think Canterino, Prelipp and Varland should definitely be full-time relievers. All three could be high leverage weapons in our pen, making our relief core even deeper if everyone is healthy. Maybe that depth opens up a trade at the deadline to get a little more thump in our lineup somewhere. As far as starters to relievers I'd say maybe Raya and or Soto? I wouldn't make that move until they are sure those guys cannot handle a starters workload, AND if we have that big of a need in the pen.

Elite offense and Health and / or deep lineup conundrum
LambchoP commented on Brandon's blog entry in Blog Brandon
I think that expecting France to be productive enough to be our everyday first baseman all year is a little naive. I'm guessing Miranda takes over before too long if he's healthy. I just hope we don't stick with the struggling veteran for far too long like we did with Margot last year. Same opinion with second base. Let Lee and Julien battle it out for the starting job, but if they're both struggling and Keaschal or Eeles are raking in AAA, then give them a shot if they earned it. -
Keaschal has the best potential here, but my guess is they're going to take it slow with him coming off tommy john surgery and not playing in AAA yet. Maybe if he's healthy from the get go and raking at St Paul he gets a mid season call up. Kind of surprised how far down the depth chart Severino has fallen. I know he's not a great defender at first, but he led the minors in homers in 2023 and he still hit like 24 last year. Getting some power from first base wouldn't be the worst thing especially if France is a bust. Hopefully in his second full year in AAA he puts it all together and raises his stock a bit. Oh, and the fact they're not giving Eeles a look in spring training is dumb. Maybe they want to see if he can keep raking in AAA a bit longer?

While I obviously would have liked someone much better, im fine with the deal. As long as he doesn't take at bats away from Miranda or anyone else that is outhitting him, he can play a capable first base and if he does struggle badly, they don't stick with him for way too long like they did with Margot.
-
Lack of depth at second base? We have Lee, Castro, Martin, Julien, Keaschal, Eeles, maybe even Ty France. I think Keaschal and Lee will be the long term answer but until Keaschal is ready, I hope Lee can get back to hitting like he did in the minors. It would be a big boost to this lineup, especially since I don't trust Julien one bit until he proves he can hit again in AAA.

I think bunting has it's time and place and can be incredibly valuable to have a few guys on your team that can lay down a good sacrifice or even bunt for hit. Especially if the team is having trouble scoring runs. Then it becomes even more important to bunt, steal, and move runners over. You can't expect to score all your runs on home runs, even in todays game.

Ranking the Top 5 Twins Prospects in Big-League Camp
LambchoP replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
I think the second base battle will be fun to watch. My guess is it will be some combo of Lee and Castro. Julien needs to earn his way back up. At 1b Im hoping France shows something with the bat, but if he sucks I really hope they don't stick with him over Miranda. I'm also excited about the group of young arms coming up. St Paul should have one heck of a pitching staff. Festa Mathews Adams Raya Lewis.... We all know you can never have too much pitching, which is why I hope we spring a trade to keep Castellano. Dudes got great potential. Im also excited to see how Canterino and Prelipp look this spring. If healthy these guys could be major impact weapons out of the pen.- 17 replies

Offseason Status Update: Springing Into Action
LambchoP replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Since it looks like we now don't care about defense at 1st base, we should make a trade for Casas as our long term starter. Give BOS Miranda, Castro or Julien plus one of our up and coming SP. I worry about this team scoring runs and Casas would be a huge improvement over France:)- 25 replies

It Sounds Like the Twins Have Big Plans for Ty France
LambchoP replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As a cheap backup or platoon bat i was fine with the France signing. But this makes it sound like he gets the starting first base job no matter what, leaving Miranda who is the better bat and defender probably as a dh. I just hope they dont pull a Margot and stick with a struggling France for far too long. -
I think if Castellano shows anything in spring, a trade is going to need to be made so we can send him back down to AA. He was the minor league pitcher of the year for PHI and he ranks somewhere in the middle of the Twins top 30. We have a lot of intriguing arms coming up but as everyone knows, there is no such thing as too much pitching. I wonder what it would take in a trade. I cant imagine too much. A good looking A or AA starter?
