Twins (Ryan) vs Red Sox (Bello): 5/2/25, 6:10pm
knothole61 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
dude, we need to put together a 16 -game win streak like the New York Giants did near the end of the 1951 season. 29-20 would look pretty good. But, the Giants were stealing signs with a spyglass from Durocher 's office in deep center at the Polo Grounds. Hmmmmmmmm -
Guardians 4, Twins 3: Yet Another Wet Slap
knothole61 replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think that Buxton has underachieved as a base stealer during his career, but the fact that he's never stolen third probably has more to do with his ability to score so easily from second that it's not really worth the risk in most cases (Manfred Time is an exception) to send him to third. But it's hard to say....- 81 replies

Guardians 4, Twins 3: Yet Another Wet Slap
knothole61 replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Kirby, I agree about Buxton as a base thief, and it is really very strange. Keaschall appears to be a better base stealer at this point and he's certainly not as fast as Buxton. Maybe Luke is better able to time his takeoff at the precise moment that the pitcher has reached the point of commitment to throw home. Perhaps Buxton, for all of his obvious athletic ability, just isn't getting the quickest jump at times? I may be way off base (!) but that's my best guess.- 81 replies

So disappointing--but really, what can we expect with one-third of the lineup averaging .116. I think the over/under bet on hits per week for the trio of Keirsey, Jr., Gaspar, and Clemens would be two and one-half, and Gasper is by far the class of the group. Mr. Keirsey has done what I would once have considered impossible, made me long for Gasper whenever he is in the box...seriously. Is Miranda injured? If not, wouldn't it be a good idea to have him replace a member of .116 Club? After all, he shares an all-time MLB record for most consecutive hits...all-time! 12 hits in a row for Miranda--how long (months) do you think it might take Keirsey to collect 12 hits? Maybe half a season? Let's win tomorrow for a split, and Go Wolves!

Twins 11, Guardians 1: Opening Salvo
knothole61 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great win...it could set a solid tone for this important road trip. This is off topic, so I'll try to keep it short: I hate the ads projected on the back of the mound that match the ads projected on the low walls in back of the batter. I resent them for many reasons, but I'm troubled by anything that alters reality even for something as mundane as selling dog food. And then one is left to wonder where it all ends. Could someone buy the rights to the Zapruder film and project an ad for Dr. Pepper or maybe Nike on the trunk lid? I can hear that young advertising whiz at the meeting declaring: "Let them try to ignore that!" Oh well... -

Bly, I'll bet that you could have popped at least a single off of the Eephus pitch that Clemens turned on! But, yeah, he did hit it well... -
Twins 5, Angels 0: It's So Not Joever
knothole61 replied to Hans Birkeland's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Nice sweep. I refuse, however, to hope for too much on this upcoming road trip. I've set 3-4 as the expected outcome against Cleveland and Boston...anything under that is a bad road trip and anything over that is good. Baby steps are fine right now because, well, it's still April! And, Go Wolves (couldn't help it)!- 30 replies

I offer the words of contemporary writer Jeffrey Aberjhani as an ode to resurrection in the wake of a startling rebirth of the Twins' offense (including two hits from Gaspar!). It's baseball and tonight's resurgence against the average Angels may be fleeting, but, I believe, deserving of praise nonetheless. "A bridge of silver wings stretches from the dead ashes of an unforgiving nightmare to the jeweled vision of a life started anew." Win Twins!

I might move C-4 down to 8th in the order to start. He will have one or two limited hot streaks this summer, but will mostly remain unproductive at the plate, I fear. Regarding Keaschall--I love the kid: Intensity at the plate, stolen bases, shrugs off a fastball hit on his hand, and he's sporting the Roy Hobbs, Wonderboy, lightning bolt motif.

44, credit where credit is due, big homer tonight and his average is now up to .200. I'll wait two or three weeks to declared him full of fire, however. Hey, maybe he could instruct the team in the art of running on the infield grass as they near the bag at first, that worked out quite well for him.

Linus, I dig what you are saying, and I admit that 10 in a row seems far-fetched--but that 8 year-old boy inside of me who refuses to go away thinks that maybe we can win five of the next six and fly into Cleveland with a bit of an edge.

The Twins' current predicament reminds me of that old adage about a missing nail in a horseshoe starting a chain of events that resulted in the loss of a battle and ultimately a war. Bear with me for a second: the Twins left for Atlanta to face the last place, 5-13 Braves with a bit of momentum having just taken a series from a very good, $323 million team. After a day off they came out charging and built a 4-1 lead going into the 8th. I believe that if the Twins had managed to win that game it's likely that they would have taken, if not swept, the series. The gut wrenching loss, however, lifted the spirits of the Braves and put a genuine damper on Minnesota's momentum, resulting at least to some extent, in the ugly sweep we've just witnessed. Analytics and matchups, etc. have their place, but as long as baseball is played by human beings, factors such as mood, motivation, and momentum will play a major role in determining outcomes. Without the Jax/Sands 8th inning meltdown the Twins might be 10-12 right now and heading home with a 5-game winning streak to face the Sox and a chance to move past .500 "For the want of a nail..." .

JADBP, you may be the only person with fewer posts than I have, and I for one hope that you will offer many more. I've been trying for years now to put my finger on the most malignant aspect of Rocco's persona, and to no avail--but I think you've managed to hit it on the head. I've condemned him for seeming to be too mellow like a Grateful Dead zombie, (no, not all Dead fans are zombies, but some are!) or a micro-managing pinhead, or even a leader who is hesitant to fully utilize (let alone push to their limits) his charges due to an excess of caution and empathy...think of Gen. George B. McClellan here. But now, thanks to you, when I look at him staring placidly out from the dugout I will envision him loading kids into a mini-van, bound for an ice cream treat or a "Misty Slush" at Dairy Queen where everyone can admire their participation trophies and blow paper wrappers off of their straws. Brilliant! Look, I think he's probably a nice guy, and that he loves baseball, and that he was an excellent player in his day...I just can't imagine him taking the Twins to the Promised Land.

JD, remember what Mike Zimmer famously said to a reporter who seemed naively mystified after an embarrassing loss "Did you watch the game?" Well, allow me to respectfully ask you: did you watch the game last night, or on Wednesday night, or most any time that this "shut down" reliever with such great stats and stuff has pitched this year? I know that Jax has had some success in the past, but what I'm saying is that he's hit a wall now; that I'm not surprised; and that he will probably never be what he once was, and what we all want him to be. Okay, you've got your stats and I have my intuition...let's let it play out and see who is correct. You with your facts and me with my thoughts is kind of like the battle between John Henry and the machine, but I still like my odds, although I am pulling for you.

Ouch...even during his short-lived "he's the greatest set-up man in all of baseball" phase, there's been something about Jax that didn't sit well with me. This is not 20/20 hindsight--I've never really trusted his stuff. I'm not sure what this makes me, (a Boomer I guess!) but I base most of my MLB beliefs on observation and intuition rather than on today's endless and incredible array of stats. So...my eye test has always told me that there's some fragility in Jax that will keep him from ever achieving any long term success in MLB. Maybe he will right the ship and become of value to the Twins. Maybe his 11 runs in 8 innings and 11.25 ERA is aberrant, but I genuinely doubt it. Time will tell, and I hope that I'm wrong, but please Rocco use him sparingly for the time being and not as the vaunted set-up man. It's all so sad really...I mean, after all of the early season scuffling and ineptitude, the Twins were ready to turn a bit of a corner tonight. A win to start the Atlanta series, that included an impressive rookie debut and a strong performance from Paddack, could well have provided a springboard for this series and beyond. Instead, the much needed come-from-behind win for the struggling Braves has given them the momentum.

Twins (Paddack) vs Braves (Elder): 4/18/25, 6:15pm
knothole61 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
RpR, that's absolutely true...there's nothing so common as a newbie (pitcher or position player) bursting onto the scene in dramatic fashion until the book is written on him. I think that Miranda and Julian, for example, debuted as world beaters but have settled back into something much less reliable. But...maybe we have caught lightening in a bottle with this guy. I remember listening on the trusty transistor radio to Rod Carew's fist game. He had a hit in his first at bat and ended up 2 for 4 against the Orioles in Baltimore. I had a feeling he was going to be something special--and that worked out! While I'm not saying that he will become another Rod Carew (that's impossible) but I do have the same feeling in Keaschall's case; that he's going to be something special. We'll see...
