  1. This has already been decided, but Varland can't have a sniff of the majors until he has had several successful starts with St. Paul.
  2. I get the revenue model is flawed as evidenced by the numerous teams that shrank their payroll. And I think you are correct about DeScalfini as a throw in. I like the trade. Polanco was, at best, an average fielding 2nd baseman with a diminished ability to stay on the field. But this reinforces my beef with Falvine. They did virtually nothing to replace the lost starters. Our starting depth is in the minors and not quite ready (except SWR we hope). Mid rotation starter(s) ought to have been the goal. None of the new relievers have had a significant impact on the team. Our best relievers are from last years team.
  3. Sorry, but I respectfully disagree. Ownership knew a new TV deal was needed and didn't get it done until VERY late...and it's not a new deal. The appears to have lead to cutting payroll. Management made the decision to get a deeper bullpen and not acquire much for our departing starting pitchers. This was a gigantic mistake. The best relievers on the Twins thus far are all holdovers from last year. They acquire DeScalfini as a possible 5th starter (I still favor that trade) but he was probably no more than a 50/50 proposition to come back from his injury plagued season. And that left Varland who has not shown he is a starter and would have made a nice reliever. Consequently, my opinion is the front office should have targeted one or two middle rotation starters either via free agency or trade. And let's not even discuss how awful the decision was to sign Santana when we could have had Solano back. Ownership and Falvine are the primary blame; and no it's not too soon to judge. I remain hopeful that the Twins will turn it around with players returning from injury. However, the injuries do not explain the off season blunders.
  4. The Sano play made me sick. He was so terrible and uncommitted with the Twins. Now he has lost all that weight and looks like a baseball player again. I wonder why the Twins couldn't get Sano to commit to his craft.
  5. I think Farmer struck out 3 times yesterday...so that didn't work out. Nothing has worked out for Farmer thus far. So weird after being a key player last season.
  6. Farmer has fallen off a cliff and I don't get it either. The Twins acquired Margot for a bag of chips and I don't think he will be on the team for long as long as players get healthy. Wallner waking up and returning to the majors could/would hasten Morgot's departure.
  7. Boy, isn't that the truth. Our infield hitting has been awful.
  8. Big mistake not resigning Solano...and he wanted to be here!
  9. I disliked (still do) the Santana signing as well. Especially with Solano having been such a solid contributor lasts season. I would have much preferred Solano returning than signing Santana.
  10. Varland should have been sent down after his previous start. Too much slack to start the season. SWR looked good with his one start. Yup; I get that this doesn't mean he is ready; but Varland CLEARLY is not ready as a starter. Twins have to hope that Paddack gets it together so we can be solid through 4 starters. None of it matters if the Twins continue to hit like they are.
  11. I fully agree; however, the outfield is so thin, we need both of them.
  12. yup; i think the big mistake this off season (once the budget was set), was not pursuing a middle rotation starter through trade or late signing. It seems the Twins wanted to make Varland happy and keep him as a starter. He was soooo impressive late last season as a reliever.
  13. While on the topic of starting pitchers, I thought the Twins should have saved SWR to start instead of Varland this weekend. Varland has proven that he is good once through the order.
  14. Martin has really impressed me. Saw him at spring training and he looks like a player. I suspect he will be hard to send back down. I hope that is true.
  15. Larnach played last night; I think at single A. They certainly could use Lee right now.
  16. Good call out. This series did not set up well for the Twins. Incredible how well the relief pitching has been with all of the injuries. We need 7 innings from Lopez today as our best guys are likely not available out of the pen today.
  17. That's fair, Stewart has been great. I guess with Stewart's success, all extreme long shots are worth a roster spot. And I get with the extensive injuries to the pen, the Twins have next to no options to add to the staff. This guy is clearly on the roster as a warm body.
  18. With the Martin call up, his infield play is most likely at 2nd base...in addition to the outfield.
  19. I think we are going to see more julien with Royce out...bad reason. Farmer will spend more time at 3rd. I hope the Twins call up Martin.
  20. Royce Lewis is just plain snake bit. I'm sad for Royce; sad for the Twins and sad for all of the fans. Darn it!
  21. I like Varland and feel he can be a solid 5th starter this season. Unfortunately, our experienced depth in starting pitching is now diminished. I'm sure everyone noticed that the Rangers signed Michael Lorenzen for 4 - 7 Million (incentives) in a one year deal. That looks pretty good to me and I wonder if the Twins had a shot at him, or if they were not interested. I think given the aspirations the team has this year, that would have been a good signing.
  22. Nailed it. I love Jorge as well, but he could only play 2nd base with diminishing returns. As a competitive AND business decision, it was time to move on from Jorge.
  23. I do think the Twins need another starter now; regardless of how well regarded our youngsters are. Additionally, with the bullpen depleted of two of our best, Varland could start the season as an 8th or 9th inning option if the Twins were to secure depth at starting pitching.
  24. I was at the Twins vs. Braves a couple of days ago and Martin started at 2nd base. He made two beautiful plays and looked good hitting even though the Twins only got a few hits. He is certainly athletic and looks like a solid ballplayer. He's my choice in CF if Buxton goes down. Here's hoping Byron a great season and no need for more than a back up CF!
