  1. If he was a competent pitcher in his 20’s he’d have that opportunity. …….I like Caleb but it’s not “baseball’s fault” that he left the game due to essentially washing out and then found something and came back at 31. Am really glad he has had success!! I agree - unless Okert tears up his arm this year - I don’t see Thielbar back with the Twins next year, regardless of his possible success this year. ……..Okert is signed & Funderburk looks good in small pieces of 2 different years.
  2. When the Team isn’t winning, I’m not reaching and sitting the guy I know is going to catch at least 70 games for me this season to HOPE a rookie can get a hit, before he’s sent back down as guy’s get healthy over the next 10 days. Vazquez top 10-12 defensively in ‘23 - right or am I way off? …….compared to “Camargo must be able to catch”……..”let’s give him a shot” ……..it’s not Legion Ball and Camargo is a Sophomore. I might let him travel with the Legion Team in case a guy gets hurt - that’s it though. If we’re up late 7-1, he’s in there. Down big as in Baltimore, he should be in there.
  3. I love Kiersey after last year in St Paul - wasn’t sure what he’s doing this year. He’d have to displace Larnach……..may be a while. Frankly, .280 in AAA may translate to .270 all the way down to .100 in the Show. Nobody knows. I get it, give him a chance! Vazquez throws (has done it in 3 different games I’ve seen) guys out - handles the pitchers well & is familiar. Camargo has an uphill challenge unless they give him a shot at DH when Jeffers catches. With platooning catchers daily, there is no fatigue issue. He doesn’t move the needle hitting .210 and being no better, for sure, defensively.
  4. So you think $2.5M spread to Farmer (3.75 - 6.25) is somehow a number that moves the needle to make the Team better elsewhere? Don’t see it. He was out a month last year after getting hit in the face………..still played in 120 games. If you start as a Platoon guy & the team goes to a RH pitcher, you get PH for by Julien every time…….if you bat 7th-9th in the line-up & nobody hits, you get 3 AB’s max. His AB’s through 17 games are 31 with 6 walks & on via error once. Not sure where you are getting the 12 & 10 PA data = 22 PA’s……. his total is 38. He’s played in 13 of 17 games as well. Santana & Vazquez are the offensive disaster signings. $5.5M & $10M………but I firmly believe these guys aren’t overpaid, because you can’t pay them little enough to have value, offensively. They are a disaster - Vazquez not quite as bad. Farmer plays 15-20 games at 3B with Lewis healthy. He plays 15-20 games at SS with Correa healthy. He starts 40 games as platoon 2B. Defensive replacement late, maybe 15 games. That’s 85 assuming the minimum.
  5. Kepler - Wallner (Larnach) - Lewis - Correa all in the line-up allow Castro to play OF or DH from the left side of the plate, in front of Santana as an option. Kirilloff at 1B v. RH pitching. Santana is a back-up when being considered as a left handed hitter…….under normal circumstances. He starts 4/2 - 4/3 or whenever because of the ripple effect of Lewis being out & Castro playing 3B v. RH pitching……,if Lewis plays Castro is in line-up v. Santana, IMO.
  6. Just because Farmer didn’t expect the “organization would pay him” with their salary contraction doesn’t mean he’s expensive. $6.5 million is not expensive when you have roughly 15 guys making the minimum. He’s the depth at 3B - SS - 2B, not just a short side of a platoon. With a fully healthy roster Farmer starts 80 games minimum. What if they signed him for a frugal $1.5 million reduction to ‘23’s salary for $3.75 million - is that more tolerable? He isn’t hitting - that’s the sole problem. Whether he’s playing 3B - 2B - SS seems immaterial to me. If Lewis were playing, IMO, Farmer would play SS in Correa’s absence. Castro would be in the OF as was the plan coming into the season. That frees up, on current roster, Kirilloff to play 1B whenever Rocco sees fit. I guess, if they think Santana’s a good option from the left side as “the every day guy” he would have started v. a right handed pitcher yesterday instead of right handed hitting Miranda……good bet anyway.
  7. How many games did Julien play - has he ever played at 1B? The Team’s comments in the Spring was “defense” would matter in playing time. (certainly doesn’t suggest Julien’s jumping ahead of anyone at 1B with his history) The Media - TD people theorized he was playing everyday. He can’t hit from the left side - appears to be questionable from right side. His role was depth with Miranda being a big question mark. He fits perfectly as a right/left platoon with Kirilloff. Injuries have forced him into the line-up. Kepler (injury) - Wallner (ineptitude) - Larnach (injury) have pulled Kirilloff into the OF refularly. Farmer is expensive on a team that cut payroll 20% ….,……how much more costly is he this year v. last year? Maybe $1.2M? Farmer isn’t hitting right now or he’d be “a great value”. April 17th.
  8. If you just want to be contrary say so. He’s a ROOKIE! Am assuming they have more confidence in interaction with the pitcher from a guy they signed due to his defensive prowess AND the ability to interact with the staff. Obviously, I think he’s physically capable of catching in MLB. If Camargo is sent down this morning it has no affect on the Club. He’s insurance to not get into a pinch with Jeffers forced into DH spot.
  9. I just think they are afraid of what pitcher to start him with……when would it make sense? Having him DH instead of how Vazquez did the other day is absolutely mystifying. He’s easily worth a shot in that scenario! He may get a pinch hit opportunity soon. If Jeffers keeps hitting everyday, his time will come. ……,Martin didn’t see the field for a bit - he’s playing now after circumstances changed. Kepler & Wallner, with minimum expectations of .230 BA & Correa minimum at .260 & Lewis minimum at .280………..,without these guys and LEE being out, the Team can’t absorb Zero from those 5 guys. Looking to Camargo to fill any void isn’t the answer (I get he deserves a chance) ………how about Buxton & Vazquez & others picking it up a bit?
  10. He’s there to allow Jeffers to DH w/o risk. It gives them a comfort feeling and the ability to potentially pinch hit for Vazquez later in a game. Should another guy have his roster spot - certainly debatable with the shambles that is the present OF. Already have 3 guys to play 1B, so another HITTING outfielder is only option - don’t know who that may be in St. Paul ? He can only displace Vazquez in the line-up and putting him into a line-up that’s struggling probably isn’t optimal. I get the frustration with offense!!
  11. Farmer is not expensive - the Team reverted back to 2021 Salary and chose to spend $25-$30M less than ‘23. It’s April - played 10% of the games. Farmer will level off in his performance at the plate. Santana was/is washed on the left side - could see that going in to the deal. He’s a defensive insurance policy if needed and a platoon guy on the right side as well as a pinch hitter on right side. He’s in the line-up too much due to injuries AND the fact that Wallner reverted back to high school level …….with Kepler & Wallner providing Zero - Santana has been penciled in since Kirilloff is in OF regularly or at DH…..,,can’t Trade him to a Korean team……no other takers! Julien not, nor will be, an option at 1B, SWR isn’t a savior but certainly deserves a shot. DeSclafani was a risk - Headrick being out hurt is hindsight criticism. After two years of Varland spot starting with mixed results, no reason to think he wasn’t/isn’t ready for a shot in the rotation…….Paddack needs to step up & they need to score ……have squandered at least one exceptional start each from Lopez - Ryan - Ober……….when starter gives up 1 or zero runs the Team needs to win!!
  12. So Louie wasn’t good again Monday. Paddack got knocked all over tonight v. Orioles. IMO, they each get 1 more start and w/o improvement SWR has to be penciled in for 3 consecutive starts. Don’t know if Team has enough guts to Option Varland and put Paddack into the Pen? ……,it may be best option but who is then the 5th starter………stretch out Sands in short term? Gotta shake things up if Varland & Paddack don’t change immediately!
  13. What’s the minimum duration after getting optioned down? Assuming it was to just give him 2-3 days off…….taking a look at Bowman in right situation? ……..maybe, Thielbar will pull another muscle? ……I know just one outing but his need to be almost perfect with command really worries me at age 37.
  14. Well stated - can’t hit, better be able to field! Fundamentals, lack of, like on the loose throw from Martin can be a killer - simple stuff. Thielbar scares me going forward. Ober had a disastrous first start - since then he’s looked completely under control giving up 6 hits & one run over 11 innings in his last 2 starts. Tough no decision today.
  15. Lots of misplays on both sides. Seems odd to give up down 4 runs. Glad a few guys contributed! 6 innings and one earned is a nice job by Ryan. 6 more innings from the Pen, starting 2 innings with a guy in 2nd and only giving up 2 is very respectable! Wallner jumped on an opportunity to at least establish some positive statistics. Second game SWR set them up with another solid start! Nice depth.
  16. 58-57 in mid-August in ‘23……….started 17-12 to achieve that. When the winning streaks come don’t really matter as long as team isn’t discouraged. Lee - Larnach - Correa - Kepler - Lewis ……addition of Martin……..all reasons to feel better about where we might be by Memorial Day. Wallner can’t hit .060 much longer! Julien has officially heated up. Staff sure seems stable top to bottom.
  17. My thought was he had a very solid last 3 plus months last year in St Paul (right?) - expecting good results! Not necessarily repeats of today, but competitive.
  18. Who is Thielbar going to supplant in 5-10 days? Okert & Funderburk have been very effective! Alcala has shown up along with Sands!! Those 4 with Jackson - Jax - Stewart give us some good problems once Thielbar - Topa - Duran are ready to come back! Staumont can take his time!
  19. He’s gotta start Monday - so Varland isn’t moving to the Pen regardless of the 27th man rules. Guys are lined up to start on regular rest now. I guess Tonkin could be optioned, if legal? Bowman can’t go down because he’s got about an 85% chance of pitching Sunday. Nice job by SWR today! He’ll be back within another 3/4 weeks. Gonna need around 8 starts from him - that’s if everyone else holds together.
  20. Santana has really disappointed from the right side of the plate! His role, with other’s health, was to hit from right side & provide defense as the situation warranted at 1B. Now he’s playing every inning - not cool. CC out 3-4 weeks could be a serious problem. Wallner - Jeffers - Santana have to contribute something!!…………Castro & Farmer will be playing regularly and need to help as well……obvious stuff here, I know.
  21. With REPLAY there are no “fortunate” calls anymore……other than balls & strikes. I’ve watched maybe 6 games and have seen him throw out 3 guys, minimum. He’s only caught 3 of the games. He’s not a solid hitter any longer but he keeps working at it & if he hits .230 and plays solid defense he’s a good piece for the Twins……..IT IS EARLY, you’re right …………whether he was paid $4.5 million or $10 million it doesn’t change the rest of the Team’s roster………Correa’s salary (not complaining) is the restrictive number relative to a more robust, well rounded roster, offensively. CC’s salary & the decision to back up Payroll to 2021 level - $26M lower than last year are the restrictions.
  22. A little odd with the move to Castro? I guess, with 3 games in next 2 days, he wants to try and keep Jackson available…….another 6-10 pitches and he probably can’t be used today at all. There was no logical benefit to leave him in and maybe letting Vazquez play 3B lightened the mood in the dugout in a lost cause situation? Just precautionary & no harm done. Our bats are the problem, not the managing. Tonkin (I didn’t see every pitch) had 5 K’s and it looked like he had a couple scratch hits against him. Potentially, another reasonable depth guy? Can’t give up 2 walks in 2 innings though. Correa out of our mediocre line-up is the real issue after last night!! Gotta be 3 weeks minimum. ANY news on Lee’s back injury. Rehabbing yet. Any potential timing?……..same with Larnach?
  23. There was a piece (maybe in Athletic? - Twins specific) maybe 5-6 weeks ago showing all “good” Twins that batted left handed. Maybe a dozen guys? Koskie - Kubel - Oliva - Carew - Morneau - Hrbek - Mauer and another 4-5 guys. Bottom line is it showed left handed hitters (article supported logic of platooning for lefties) had pretty big drops v. LH pitching. Oliva having a .690 OPS was telling! Carew was lower but still above average. ALL guys were lower v. LH pitching, some everyday guys were pretty significant drops. The premise was that guys see waaay more RH pitching while kids & learning & as young men and then through their careers. RH hitters get used to seeing RH pitching and are in a sink or swim situation their whole lives v. RH pitching. LH hitters see predominantly RH pitching and then in the Show the lefties they see more of, are professionals. Poor results. Wallner - Julien - name anyone batting left handed……..probably are never, regardless of fans just wanting “to give them a chance”, going to be effective or nearly as effective v. LH pitching. The platoon makes sense! ………similar stuff for RH hitters but more accepted maybe?
  24. i.e Kirilloff from Glasnow on Tuesday night - slider down & in ……….3 straight pitches that looked like instant replay ……..3 swinging strikes.
  25. You have a competent left hander in the Pen & 2 of the Top 2-3 left handed hitters in the game coming (Seager is in the mix) up in Ohtani & Freeman. Absolutely the right move to not let a guy with “OK stuff” that relies a bunch on location and fooling hitters, to face these two a 3rd time in an hour and 15 minutes. Okert gave up one run to Today’s version of murderer’s row………gotta score runs!! Jackson gave up the 3rd & 4th runs…….if Ober gets through the inning facing 4-5 guys and no runs, they still lose.
