He has a good attitude, fans love him, and he plays the game the right way. The fact he played 1st last year because there was a need and he did so superbly says a lot about him. I love seeing him succeed in Miami but it hurts my heart lol
This was a post on my blog, not an article from Twins Daily. Any criticism can be directed at me as the poster not to the website as a whole. The nice thing about a place like this is the sharing of ideas and the discussion that takes place. Because of the level of emotion involved with this trade albeit right or wrong it will continue to be a topic of discussion and everyone seems to have an opinion about it. We won't know whether or not this trade is a win or a loss for either team until many years from now. The purpose of the article was how bad it is looking as of Monday night. In 6 weeks the story could be completely different.
I am taking the Over. The schedule between now and then has Detroit who just won 3/4, Atlanta who is good, Baltimore who is good, and KC (only 'on paper' winnable series).
I'm not talking about Willi Castro playing CF. I'm talking about the roster spot in general being used for someone in AAA (Larnach or Wallner specifically) if Buxton is unable to play at a level that allows him to contribute.
Half of Buxton value is defense and other than last night his offense hasn't been supplying value. If there is another player who can provide value offensively and defensively the decision has to be made.
I read the statements that Buxton physically cannot play defense and understand that but there has to be a time that comes when the FO realizes the injury that is preventing him from playing CF is impacting his hitting and they need to sit him down for the good of the team. Hopefully last night is the start of a hot streak and he will start producing.
I think there is some psychology involved with it. You're right about the hostage situation. There are too many other young players who could use those at bats right now who are stuck on the bench for a struggling Buxton. I don't think this is something he can hit his way out of (which is what I had hoped before the most recent IL stint.)
Indeed it isn't a video game, and the Twins are gonna have to figure out what they need to do to get Buxton to contribute and it could be his best contribution is sitting on the bench to let someone else more capable play until he is in a better position physically.
This is looking like a worse version of the Tony Oliva situation.
My analysis is yes, and that since he can't contribute defensively he is pressing at the plate which leads to him struggling more and it just becomes a cycle of futility. I've heard guys who DH'ed primarily say when they get stuck in a slump not being able to play the field puts more pressure on them to contribute with the bat and they end up trying too hard. I think that's what we see from Buxton now.
