  1. Agreed. Unfortunately Byron Buxton has been branded with the shoulda, woulda, coulda of ridiculous expectations, so nothing he does will likely live up to the hype. In a vacuum, it's a pretty good career, but everyone will always wonder what might have been if he had stayed completely healthy.
  2. As much as I would like to see Raya piling up the innings pitched and getting stronger, there is likely a reason that the Twins are handling him the way that they are. I'm pretty certain they know quite a bit more about his pitching, his physical condition, and his potential than I do. It is arguably working, so I'm willing to be patient and see what happens. Unfortunately, patience can be a little lacking around here.
  3. You have no idea how jealous I am right now! He was indeed a great one, and we have the same October 1 birthday. Have you read One Tough Out? It’s excellent.
  4. Great article! Twelve year old me was absolutely thrilled that day. I remember listening to it on the radio and being really, really excited about it!
  5. This is exciting to see. He seems ready for this and I think it's pretty easy to overlook a blowup day. I'm not expecting anything ridiculous and would be happy with #4/5 starter kind of numbers for a rookie debut. If we get better, it's a Festi(a)val!
  6. Yes. On the bright side, it may keep us from making a bad trade — or not.
  7. Since you didn’t mention Sano, I’m guessing that you realize that the high expectations game often leads to disappointment. Buxton et al have proven that.
  8. If you had gone with Mauer & Moreau, or Hrbek & Puckett, I could give you some points for optimism and said that I hope you’re right. However, you didn’t even stop at Killebrew & Carew. You went straight for the inner circle of inner circle hall of famers in Ruth & Gehrig, AND declared they will make them look like T-ball players. Yikes! Be prepared for the disappointment that your statements have guaranteed. Not even Brooks Lee’s mom thinks that.
  9. Are you Brooks Lee’s mom? He might be good eventually, but “once in a lifetime talent”? As much as I would like you to be right, saying it doesn’t make it so.
  10. I think you are absolutely allowed to be critical of the organization, and yes, there are certainly teams that "do right" by their fans with greater frequency than do the Twins. However, it's not all (or always) that bad. I share (some of) your frustration, but for me, it never gets to the extreme lows that you are experiencing. It kind of sucks the joy right out of it. For me, but YMMV, I choose to root for the team and the players without regard for the guys holding the purse strings, because nothing I do or say will change that part of the equation. The Twins have some good players. Some are playing well, some are not -- that's pretty much normal. They are on pace to win about as many games as they were projected to win before the season, maybe even a little bit ahead of pace. The team is enjoyable to watch and will be in contention for a playoff spot. From there, who knows? And that's the beauty of it. It certainly beats the early 1980's (with Calvin Griffith!) and late 1990's, and I remember living through that.
  11. The two expiring contracts would be OK if they can be had cheap. We can certainly use another solid SP arm, but I think the price may be higher than I would like for a rental. On the other hand if Sean Menaea at a $13.5M pricetag for next year could be had that might prove more interesting. Would they want Paddack back for their bullpen this year (and maybe next year as well, or he could start) and one of our mystery bats like Wallner or Larnach (I'd add Kiriloff but I don't think anyone will touch him right now)? Happy to throw in Farmer if they want a utility guy. Could be a win/win trade, not that I care about the Metropolitans.
  12. The odds of increased revenue leading to LESS spending would seem remote. Having Lewis featured on a national stage leads to greater recognition for the Twins. Back in the day Killebrew and Oliva did that.
  13. So if someone looks at a spreadsheet, i.e. an organized record on paper/screen, that makes their calls foolish? So if he just “shot from the hip” that would certainly be better? Do you really think that Gardenhire and Kelly didn’t base their decisions on what their perceived experiences were? They didn’t call it analytics because no one used those words. If something has a 60% chance of success I’m taking that every time over something with a 40% chance of success. YMMV.
  14. You do realize (and I'm making an assumption here) that you have not ever been, nor likely will ever be a major league baseball manager, right? Why do you suppose that is? I'm also assuming that you know that the other teams are also trying to win too, right? Everybody uses the dreaded "analytics", as people who do no analysis tend to lose about 80% of the time. Everything in baseball is a case of the numbers working in your favor or not working in your favor. Over the past 8 years, there have been playoff appearances and actual playoff victories. It's not a finished perfect product, but I would consider that progress. Please ask people in Oakland (and many other teams) if that is a "nothing".
  15. "To be taken seriously, the Twins must make multiple moves at the deadline" No. They don't. It doesn't mean they can't, but if anyone is expecting some grand trading spree, they are very likely not to get it. Perhaps a couple of small moves will help them, but the team we have is the team we are going to get for the most part. The Twins don't need to "be taken seriously" by anyone in the chattering class, they just need to play well and win.
  16. If the Twins want Lee to play 2nd base, then he needs to do that BEFORE he comes up to the majors. Yes, he's a good athlete, but this isn't townball. He needs some time to get more familiar with the position. Everything happens just a little bit faster in the majors. Unless they want to bring him up as a mostly DH, I don't think it's likely to happen in the next couple of weeks. For this reason, IF Julien can get his bat straightened out, I think that we are going to see Julien up for another shot before we see Lee. I know that's not popular because Lee's bat is very hot right now, but if he's for real, that won't be an unusual occurrence.
  17. As has been suggested by others, I think finding a way to get him a short stint on the IL for "tired arm" or "left arm tightness" followed by a rehab stint in St. Paul would be in order. That gives him some time to work things out (if they can be worked out) without negatively affecting the Twins' game results. He has been a terrific relief pitcher over the past few years, but alas, father time may be catching up to him.
  18. The right trade package for Kikuchi would be a fine thing, given that he's a lefty starter and we don't currently have one of those. The others are either much too expensive, either in prospect cost or in salary, or not that much of an upgrade from who we have -- or even a combination of those two things. With many of them, I just don't want to pay for what they may have done in the past. I do think that all of this trade deadline talk is a little premature, since we haven't even hit July 1 yet.
  19. And they are immediately followed by posts with “yeah but” statements explaining how if you look at it in some bizarre way, the person citing them is still right! Argh!
  20. I don't think that I necessarily extend him, but I'm mighty glad to have him around. I think his job next year depends on Austin Martin. If Martin can be a player of similar value for $700K, then Castro is part of a trade package of some sort. If not, then he sticks around and we wait for the next young player to replace him. Keeping him beyond next year doesn't seem necessary at this point, but prospects are called prospects for a reason and all those young guys who "could replace him" or who are "locked in" at a position might wash out before they establish themselves. In the meantime, Castro is really fun to watch. BTW, I like this Bonnes fellow's writing. It's nice to find a new guy around here like that! Keep up the good work!
  21. Sorry. Too much for not enough. Can’t imagine giving up THAT much pitching without a pitcher in return for anybody.
  22. I’m in agreement. I’m also a big Arraez fan. He’s a really good player, but I think the public perception of him is far greater than what he provides on the field by both the general public and nostalgic Twins fans. Would he be useful on most any team? Of course he would, but that doesn’t mean he’s not overrated. Comparing him to Tony Gwynn and Rod Carew is unfair to him, and also unrealistic. Just be realistic about who he is as a player and enjoy what he has to provide.
  23. This is a silly clickbait article. If you are going to slam every pick that doesn’t work out then you have to credit every pick that does. The Twins drafting overall has been excellent, with good finds at the top and later in the drafts. Every single team has lots of drafted players that never pan out. The Twins are no different. Suggesting that they are somehow underachieving because of a few picks that don’t make it is disingenuous at best.
  24. Wow! There is a lot to chew on in that article. I agree, while I didn't think they were terrible compared to other teams, they ranked higher than my expectations, especially on the hitter side of the ledger. I guess they really have churned out quite a few bats over the years. Makes me feel pretty good about the organization. Unfortunately, the current fan discourse says that the Twins can't do anything right. I'm guessing that this won't change anyone's mind.
  25. So by making observations, analyzing them and making decisions based on them? Hmmmm. You are only a spreadsheet away from the dark side of the force.
