How many wins has Rocco cost the Twins in 2024?
Rod Carews Birthday commented on ashbury's blog entry in Left Coast Bias
I guess that's the bottom line for me as well. I'm not watching, well mostly listening to, baseball games to find things to complain about. If the team is doing well and is fun to watch, that's what makes me a fan. Don't get me started about the mid/late 1990's though! My vote for the net positive for Rocco was based on the fact that I think he has the ship pointed in the right direction and players seem to like playing for him. Those are two things that are likely to lead to more victories. I think grading him up or down for one move or another is pretty short sighted unless it is for the most negatively egregious or most positively amazing moves. -
Absolutely true! Unfortunately, we as fans like to project that fast start that a prospect has into MVP's and All Star appearances, so undoubtedly we end up disappointed. Even great players have those moments where they get a "good talking to" by managers/coaches and many go back down to the minors to figure it out. Sometimes it's nobody's fault. It's just a part of the (admittedly very long) process. Patience is definitely the name of the game.

You are probably correct in that the Twins wouldn’t consider trading Lewis, but I think the decision would be a tough one if it were on the table. I agree that a hitter is more likely to repeat his performance, but I would also argue that bats are easier to come by than starting pitchers. For either of these players to reach their potential, ongoing health is essential. Who do you think is more likely to be that way? I’m not sure, but it’s hard to bet on a pitcher of any type or a player who has been injured as much as Lewis over the past few years. There is also the question of team control over the player, with Lewis having more time until free agency. I’m not sure what I would do, but I definitely think it is an intriguing question.

AJ Pierzynski was (and likely still is) a bit of an asshat. However, that was in the competitive/obnoxious sense of the word, not the criminal one. There's a big important difference.

How Many Active HOF Players are we Watching Currently?
Rod Carews Birthday replied to Vanimal46's topic in Other Baseball
I really think it's a lot tougher to predict than it used to be. Back in the day, if you met certain thresholds -- 500 home runs, 2500 - 3500 hits, 250-300 wins, some CYA or MVP's or batting titles -- you were pretty likely to make it in. But the importance of counting stats has definitely changed and trying to compare across eras by backing into rate stats and things like WAR numbers, while useful, isn't completely the answer either. I think that your list is mostly a good one, but I think it is a less predictable platform than it used to be. -
That probably won't be popular on this site, but it's definitely not a completely crazy trade proposal from both sides. Talk about a true "challenge" trade. A great year for each of them is Cy Young and MVP, respectively. Do you trade one for the other?

How many wins has Rocco cost the Twins in 2024?
Rod Carews Birthday commented on ashbury's blog entry in Left Coast Bias
This all depends on how you want to define things, but essentially it is unanswerable. For the record, I declared that I thought he was a net positive. I don't really know that, but it's what my overall eye test tells me. If you blame Rocco for decision x that leads to a poor result, you need to also give him credit for decision y that led to a positive result. Also, are his "poor" decisions actually poor, or are they what you wouldn't do and do some of the "poor" decisions actually work out OK. Conversely, do some of his "good" decisions lead to bad results. There are WAY too many decisions, both large and small, that result in WAY too much butterfly effect for us to really know the answer with any sense of certainty. Getting blame for a loss isn't as simple as pinch hitting too early or taking a pitcher out too early or leaving one in too long. There are far too many moving parts and human factors on the players' part to make it into a simple counting exercise. -
Fun article. It’s nice to be reminded that players are real, quirky (maybe weird?) people. For some, applying the eye black seems to be a meticulous process, but I like the Austin Martin chimney sweep approach — can’t be wasting time on that. I’m certain that the actual effect of having perfect eye black is probably less than the players think, but if the snake oil works for them, far be it from me to complain!

I think you are probably right about the defense, and I also agree that Lewis’ availability is a question mark at best. EXCEPT, I’m not ready to jump on the Brooks Lee train yet. He’s a rookie still in his honeymoon phase. We’ve only seen the best of Brooks Lee so far. The inevitable slump will help us figure out whether he is the long term piece that we hope he will be. Remember, Miranda was good, then very bad, and now very good. That could happen with any of the young players and some of them never get back to being good again.
-
Obviously, the answer is "Yes, the Twins know how to teach a sinker." Given the current environment and the current talent, they haven't deemed it necessary or important. The implied incompetence of the title of the article seems a bit overblown at best, and disingenuous at worst. I personally tire of the "Is this true?!?!?" or "Could this be?!?!?" headlines. These imply that there is a crisis somewhere that needs immediate attention, and yet seldom do these things rise to that level. We can do (and have done) better than that.
-
So unfortunately, outside of MAYBE Henriquez, there really isn't anybody there that will help the big club this season. Hopefully the young guys continue to develop, but for now, bullpen help will need to come from outside or from Varland/Paddack conversion.

This. It seems like we lump all of those guys together, when there would appear to be one of them that has shown more than the others. IF we parlay that into an excellent trade, I can live with that, but I would much rather deal Kiersay or Kiriloff if we are just dealing for the sake of dealing. Wallner has already shown a lot in MLB. He is down in AAA recharging and regaining confidence. When he comes up he could be really good again. He (and Julien) has certainly done more to give me confidence in that than most of the others out there. Again, if we're trading him for a playoff starter with control, I'm all in. But for a rental, or an iffy prospect, I'm all out.
-
We just need to find the team that will value our prospects as highly as we do. Any of these guys would be worth having around, but it always depends on price. They could all be too expensive in prospects that we value, or maybe we could find the sweet spot. It's pretty hard to "win" a deadline deal, but I would like to not lose it badly. I would get really excited about just about any of these guys, but I think it is unlikely that we will be fishing in this part of the pond.

I think your point is a very good one. Would the players who we traded away have had a real shot at the same playing time if they were still with the Twins organization? Perhaps not for the most part. The basic premise behind teams trading away players at the deadline is so that they can acquire several players to fill more weak spots on their team -- by definition a greater land of opportunity for those players/prospects. The other piece of the equation is how well does the player fit on the Twins and does he have value in other ways outside of pure on the field production. Years ago, Shannon Stewart was a pretty good player whose value was magnified on a Twins team that needed just what he brought to the table. On the whole, the deadline deals of the Twins have been mostly forgettable from both sides of the trade. At best, they got a little bit of help around the margins and at worst, they gave away a prospect too cheaply. I don't think that is confirmation of Falvey's genius nor his idioicy. I think he needs to keep trying and maybe sometime he hits the perfect move. The good news is that he doesn't need to be acting out of desperation this year.

The reality is, someone is going to have to go somewhere. The Kiriloff/Wallner/Larnach group probably doesn't ultimately all have a place to play with the Lewis/Lee/Julien/Castro/(Severino) group holding down the infield. Add to that mix, potentially Rodriguez and there just isn't a place for everybody. AND THAT'S OK. Somebody will completely wash out and somebody will probably be part of a trade package for a pitcher. I can't believe I'm saying (writing) this, but depending on Santana's price, he wouldn't be a terrible re-signing for 2025. After he got going, he has been a nice addition to the team, and certainly brings some veteran leadership to the group of young players.

This might be the most shocking development of the Twins' season so far. I assumed that they would regress a little from their previous ways, plus they got rid of a couple of real whiffers in Taylor and Gallo, but I just didn't see this happening. Good job!

Correa has been a very good pickup for the Twins. I think he offers the best combination of offensive production, defensive prowess, and leadership for our team. He’s certainly expensive (I believe Dior was the store, yes?), but I really think that the “fit” is there. A year ago, I was very worried that he might be in trouble physically and the contract would be an albatross, but this year has enabled me to chalk that up to his injury issues and trying to play through them. The added good news is that he is only guaranteed six years and not ten or more like the other shortstops on this list, but if he keeps performing, we can continue to tack on years by exercising the team options at the end. There were lots of rumors that we were in the running for Trevor Story — sure glad that didn’t work out!

Twins Hitter of the Month - June 2024

At the moment, I’m not really seeing the need for another bat. Sure, the Twins’ players are streaky (boy are they streaky), but the overall production has been quite good. Offensively, the only holes are backup catcher (Vasquez) and backup infielder (Farmer). We’re not going to eat $15M so catcher is a no go. With all of our current positional flexibility (thank you Willi Castro!), we can replace Farmer any time we want with Lee and/or Julien, or even Wallner. We’ve got some slumping players at the moment, but that has always been and will always be the case. Taken as a whole, the lineup is pretty solid. If we are indeed going to make a substantial trade, I would save my ammo for an impact starting pitcher. I don’t really think this will happen as there are way more buyers than sellers. I think it is more likely that we deal for lefty bullpen arm, but that shouldn’t really cost major prospects or big bucks. To those saying that it’s not worth upgrading the team because it’s not good enough to win playoff series games, I would remind you that BOTH of last year’s WS teams were wild card teams that had to play on the road. If this (or really any) team gets really hot, they can go a long ways in the playoffs. The Twins are playing at a 90 win pace while having several starting pitchers scuffling. Any or all of those guys could figure it back out and that would only improve the team - probably as much as an acquisition at the deadline.

Twins Pitcher of the Month: June 2024
Rod Carews Birthday replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What does Joe Ryan need to do to get a little love around here? He was at least as good as Bailey Ober and probably as good as everyone else except Jax, who has been lights out. I get some bullpen love, but “doing better than we thought they would” doesn’t equal pitcher of the month. Jax as a relief option for the All-Star game would be great, Joe Ryan has also likely earned a spot on the team. Whether either will be selected is anyone’s guess.- 6 replies

The defense is insanely good and also very valuable, but he has not done well when he is relied upon to be the main component of the offense. Right now, hitting about #7 or so, the pressure is off a little and he seems to be responding. He’s a really good lower part of the batting order hitter, he’s not my choice for the top third of the order. Is he worth the contract? Healthy, yes. $15M doesn’t buy a ton in the free agent market. We’ve just got to keep him out there and playing. Plus, as with all long-term deals, he is being paid a little for what he did in the past in addition to what the future holds.
