  1. Good of you to point this out, and you have a good point. But... Gladden took a series off a couple weeks ago so Provus and Atteberry were the broadcast team for the weekend, and those games were SO pleasant and relaxing to listen to.
  2. Gladden on the radio broadcast just now: "Garlick's been busy with a lot of balls activity out there..." Am I immature for pointing out this passing comment? Yes, probably. Is Gladden ridiculous? Also yes.
  3. Simmons not in the lineup today. Is he banged up too? Hard to see why he would be sitting against a lefty pitcher with Gordon (lefty hitter and inferior defender) in the lineup otherwise.
  4. + Simmons (got curious and looked it up - teammates in Atlanta in 2014!)
  5. Just found this thread after reading the latest minor league report. This may fall in the category of "don't complain about a free site," but I read the report on mobile and the ads are out of control. Between in-line ads and pop-ups there was almost never a moment when I didn't have one in my field of vision. At one point there was one pop-up on top of another pop-up. A pop-up appeared literally on top of this comment field as I was writing and I couldn't avoid tapping on it and getting redirected to a new ad page. Again, maybe not appropriate to complain about this given that you all make so much available for free, but this experience with the ads is starting to push the bounds of usability.
  6. Yes, his MLB career line: .228/.313/.313 However, his AAA career line: .295/.372/.437 Of course there are always players who run that kind of disparity between AAA and MLB numbers and never break through in the majors (giving us the shorthand "AAAA guy.") But it seems like there's at least some base of skills to know what he's doing at the plate. Maybe Refsnyder becomes the rare AAA veteran who finally figures it out at MLB, or maybe not, but it seems like there's no reason not to give him some run as long as he's hitting and the roster is still banged up.
  7. I looked in the "other baseball 2021" thread a couple days ago and was a little surprised that Huascar Ynoa's incident hadn't made it to be posted there, but now I see it's here. I never like to see injuries, but I also always wonder why players flirt with injury doing things like punching a bench, even in the heat of the moment. The MLBTR front page was half ex-Twins transactions yesterday.
  8. I know everyone expects big things to come from Larnach, but it's a little puzzling that he's batting ahead of Kepler at this particular moment in both of their careers.
  9. Not that it really matters much in the long run, but this got me wondering about the COVID roster rules again. When a player goes on the COVID-IL, they don't count against the 40-man roster, so the team gets an extra 40-man spot for the duration of the player's stay. When Simmons came back from the COVID-IL, they sent down Gordon, who already was and would remain on the 40-man roster. The pair of moves, together, effectively fill one more 40-man spot. I was wondering how this worked, but it looks like after they made the flurry of moves last weekend, they still had one "free" 40-man spot because of the guys on the COVID-IL. Is anyone keeping track enough to know whether that's right?
  10. Thanks for these details. This is exactly what I was wondering about when I saw the latest moves (Lin swapped in for Telis) and what I opened this thread for! I had thought that non-40-man players would be subject to typical waivers if they were sent down after replacing COVID-IL guys on the roster, but didn't know about the "outbreak" rules. I would guess that Telis and Riddle would clear waivers, but wouldn't be totally confident - a catcher who's hit well at AAA (although maybe ultimately a AAAA type) or an infielder with a good defensive rep as a true shortstop could appeal to some team.
  11. I also am wondering why they didn't try to get another inning out of Dobnak, especially with Oakland's 8 and 9 hitters due up (though the no. 8 guy Brown has been hot today.)
  12. Conventional wisdom is that a lefty pitcher facing a lefty hitter with two outs will want just to pitch to the guy and try to get out of the inning... but maybe it wouldn't have been crazy to pitch around Walsh to get to Pujols there...?
  13. I saw that and wondered whether the logic was something like this: If an opposing left-handed starter means dropping Arraez from the top of the lineup, then dropping him all the way to the 9th slot makes him effectively a second leadoff hitter later in the game, including when almost inevitably facing a right-handed reliever. Of course the depth makes a difference too!
  14. Pulled up Gameday a few minutes ago after getting out of a meeting. I'm a little surprised that Dobnak is piggy-backing with Shoemaker instead of Happ, but maybe this was the move needed to keep the shorter-stint relievers fresh. Having Dobnak and his grounder-heavy pitching in front of an infield with 3 out of 4 players playing out of position is something, too, but I guess that's what you can do in a 15-1 game.
  15. A counterpoint to this might be: if Astudillo isn't the first backup option anywhere defensively (C or IF), then what he offers offensively takes on more importance in the decision whether to keep him on the roster. With his tendency to make a lot of contact (coupled with his ability to field any of several positions for at least an inning or two) he could have some specific value as a pinch hitter. As an atypical sort of "offense-first" or at least offense-equal-to-defense utility player he might have more value than Riddle.
  16. Does Law have an opt-out that means the Twins would lose him if he didn't make the club? If not, it's hard for me to see them forcing a tough 40-man decision just to take Law over Stashak on opening day.
  17. Good news for the Twins. Possibly not such bad news for Thorpe either. While he could be close to making a transition to the bullpen, the possibility of sending him down to AAA means it also would be easier for the team to keep him starting for now and see how his adjustments this offseason play out. He's likely to have a better-defined role to prepare for this way, and the Twins are very likely to need him in MLB this year in any case, so he won't languish in the minors, and the option eliminates whatever chance there was of DFAing him and leaving him in limbo between teams.
  18. One team using the DH while the other team sends the pitcher up to bat is fun. I kind of like how the league is going farther with the "rules don't matter" approach this spring training.
  19. The three catchers/"catchers" with MLB experience on the Twins' 40-man roster have 2 cubed, 3 cubed, and 4 cubed as their uniform numbers: Garver #8, Jeffers #27, and Astudillo #64.
  20. First "blue lives matter" is an attempt to gain favor with the cop stopping him, and then when that doesn't work, he must have been targeted for being a Trump supporter (implicitly a position that favors more authority and control for cops.) What absolutely epic stupidity.
  21. I don't mean to be "writing police," especially on a free site (thanks for your writing everyone!) but it was hard not to notice that there were 3 full paragraphs talking about Tim Anderson without mentioning him by name...?
  22. If Dobnak is the likely 6th starter, he might be sent to AAA to start there and stay stretched out.
