    That was a strangely winnable game. I see Chief's point that Mauer was likely the best chance to score that run, and should have been swinging more than he did. It was ball four, though. Getting the go ahead run on base with one out would have been great. I don't think Mauer should have pinch hit for Buxton, and I don't think Belisle should have pitched the 9th.

    So I read through the game thread, found out what happened...although the reaction was fairly muted...and then went to MLB.com to watch Joe's AB. I was shocked, shocked I tell you, to see that Joe hit his walk-off homer one a two-strike pitch the opposite way. What was actually surprising was the fact that he swung at an eye-high fastball. How many times do you think Joe has done that in 14 years? It was a Dozier / Rosario stroke of genius. Apparently (at the behest of Daniel Murphy) Ryan Zimmerman has changed his swing path to increase his launch angle this year and his consistently hard hit balls are now consistently traveling further. Player analytics in the statcast era. Joe needs to look at what Zimmerman is doing this year. Great win. Let's pour some more mezcal on that fire this afternoon!

    Late to the party, but I just want to thank RB for bringing Joe Mantegna to the Joe M party. Probably should have gotten at least one Joe M visiting a Menards into Barks sanomobile montage. One more comment...Buxton hit the ball before his upper deck shot, a line out to LF, really hard. I foresee some triples for the young man in the near future.

    I don't know, looking at the numbers, I might have to give it to Turley. Between Turley, Santana and Berrios, those were some mighty fine looking Aprils.

    I regret the fact that I never took the time to write a post during the off-season entitled "making the case." There was a case to be made, which nobody believed, that the Twins could be competitive this year. One month in, and I still think it's possible. Above 500, with Berrios about to be called up, and Buxton, Mauer and Dozier all with plenty of room to improve. (Maybe Gibson too? Just maybe?) The real shame is that Trevor May is hurt. Would have loved to see him in this rotation. Anyway, I'm holding out hope the Twins could sustain this. Imagine if they hung around into June...and Falvey could contemplate trading for a starter this summer?

    Most players seem to have whole years that are outliers from their career norms. I'd personally bank in Berrios being closer to the pitcher he has been throughout his minors career than the one he was for less than half a year in the majors. Hopefully it starts on Saturday.

    Bill Smith was aggressive, you have to give him that. The Garza-Delmon trade was a disaster...but the idea of going after the best position prospect in baseball had merit.

    Agreed. They must have all of the data, just aren't posting it. I have to think seeing all of the 5-stars, 4-stars, 3-stars etc would make it more possible to see which players are having the biggest impact in the outfield.

    Small sample size alert: Buxton has reached base 8 times in the past three games, and 10 of his last 18 PAs going back 5 games. I really want to see him legging out some triples, though.

    Last year through 20 games, the Twins were 8 games below .500, at 6-14. How about sneaking over the 500 mark tonight, boys? I know that the traditional winning fare is chicken, but for getting over 500, can we order up some brisket?

    If you think people have been unkind to Buxton on this thread (and other threads) due to his slow start...for what it's worth, my nine-year old watched the game recap with me this morning, and when they showed a Buxton single, he said "Whoa, Buxton can hit?!?"

    As many are likely aware, MLB rolled out a new feature this year via Statcast, "Catch Probability." http://m.mlb.com/news/article/217802340/statcast-introduces-catch-probability-for-2017/ In a nutshell, catches are ranked based on how likely your average position player would have made a catch on a similar ball. A percentage is assigned; what percentage of players make that catch? Good catches are given stars according to this scale: 0 to 25 percent --- 5 Star play ***** 26 to 50 percent -- 4 Star play **** 51 to 75 percent -- 3 Star play *** 76 to 90 percent -- 2 Star play ** 91 to 95 percent -- 1 Star play * So far this season, both Buxton and Kepler have gotten five star plays. But is MLB keeping track of how many 5s, 4s, 3s, etc each player makes? I can't seem to find it. By the way, I got to thinking about this because of Sano's outstanding play on the Gomez bunt last night. That had to have been a <5% play, although the Statcast stat doesn't apply to grounders, only fly-outs. (I guess it makes sense because there are two players involved, harder to parse.) That Sano play was amazing. Anyway, the new feature is great, but it would be good to be able to see some more data on the starred plays.
