    It was an odd process for the Patriots, they handed the job to Mayo without interviewing anyone else last year, and had easily the worst roster in football so the expectations should have been low. He may have lost the locker room based on some interviews I saw with Patriots players, but perhaps there is a coaching candidate out there they really want now - Vrabel seems to be the name the media thinks. But if they bothered to do an actual search last year, Vrabel could have been part of that process. Ironic that all these years of watching Belichick protégés go out and flop elsewhere, the first thing they do after firing Bill is immediately bringing in one of his disciples? They should have at least interviewed Brian Flores, the most successful of his disciples.

    They're gonna need a massive boost in play from the young players if this team is going to make any kind of playoff push. Also, it would be a crime against baseball to go into the season with a bullpen with no legitimate left handed relievers... again (once it became clear Thielbar was cooked).

    Caleb Williams has a ton of talent, but when he's under pressure his accuracy becomes abysmal and he overthrows too often. He has speed, but doesn't have the knack to know when to run and get that free yardage. The coaching has been terrible too and the OL has been questionable, but even in well blocked games he stinks. There was an earlier game where he was pressured only 9 times... and got sacked 7 times! It's also up for debate how much of a leader he is because his body language reminds me more of a college freshman rather than a leader of an NFL locker room. Still way too early to give up on him and there is tons of room for growth, but he is a massive project at this point. They basically drafted the next version of Justin Fields and fired their coach right after taking him just like the previous regime did.

    The Twins were clearly done with Moran, might as well get something for him I guess. Eh.

    He's playing like a top 10 QB, but is he actually one? I think the environment around him has been a major factor in his success and I would be absolutely fine rolling with JJ and a high end backup like Daniel Jones, and in case JJ has injury problems they can elevate Jones' abilities like Darnold did. If Sam wants to come back on a team-friendly deal I'd be open to it, but if he wants to be paid like a top 10 QB then he is free to get his bag on the market and see how he does in a lesser environment. We need a new interior OL, at least 2 CBs, and an interior pass rushers and we won't be finding most of that in the draft. Ultimately, I will trust in what O'Connell and the front office decide on. And what happens in the playoffs.

    I have a lot more faith in Miranda, when he is healthy he can rake and was the team's best hitter for a good two months. He has had stretches like this in his career and I will sign up for his highs and lows over what we got from Julien. I'd start him in AAA and see if they can get his head straight because his 2024 was leaps and bounds worse than Miranda's. I don't know what is up with Alcala. Relievers can be volatile, but this smells like a different kind of situation.

    I thought he'd get a bit more, something like 2/$24M. It's reminiscent of Eddie Rosario getting 1/$8M when he hit the open market.

    I wonder how much injuries accounts for some of the underachieving baserunners. Buxton doesn't steal a whole lot anymore as he's risking an injury every time he does it... and Willi Castro, one of a couple who were healthy for most the year, had a bad stolen base rate at only 14 steals in 25 attempts.

    Not #1 seed related, but Kirk Cousins has been officially benched. We all knew the Falcons overspent on him, but now they're stuck paying him a boatload of money for absolutely nothing. They assumed his Achilles would heal just fine but it's apparent he can't throw the ball like he used to.

    It'll cost them $65M to release him pre June 1st in 2025, or split it up 40/25 if it's post June 1st. Or they could trade him for only a loss of $39.5M, and he has a no-trade clause. Yikes!!

    I am so glad we let him go, else the online discourse on Kirk if he were underachieving here would be intolerable, and he'd without doubt be holding this team back. They needed to slow-play him coming off that Achilles injury but they rushed him to play ASAP and he isn't quite the same. And it's almost as if the Falcons knew this was going to happen and took a QB in the top ten as insurance. Which makes it all the more baffling that they handed that ridiculous contract to him when they badly needed to fix their holes on defense but blew most of their capital on 2 QBs.

    I think the Packers are about evenly matched with the Vikings, Lions are a cut above both of them.

    For a massive return of MLB players/prospects, I would hope. But like the others here, I wouldn't pull the trigger unless I'm getting a king's ransom.

    Wow, if that is the market for Castro, then this is either his last year as a Twin or last year was.

    Lamont Wade is actually worth of an article because he did instantly become a useful player for the Giants while the Twins got a AAAA reliever for him. That was a legitimate blunder. Hendricks and Rooker less so are far enough removed from being a Twin that I find it less of a problem. The Padres and Royals are just as culpable for not cracking the case to fixing Rooker like the A's did. Ian Hamilton was a case where some, including me, were advocating for his usage but despite the team badly needing MLB-level relievers, they only ever saw him as an expendable arm not worth an extended look in the majors. Never understood the thought process on that one.

    This is the year where we see if the "pitching pipeline" we've spoken for years of actually comes to fruition. The top three starters are quality options, but can the young arms sustain the depth? Does SWR return to being a good enough #4 starter and prove that how he ended the year was a fluke? Can Festa and/or Matthews take a big step up after receiving their lumps in their rookie years? I have very little faith in Paddack due to injuries and lack of effectiveness, and this front office has shown zero ability to find a good enough #5 starter on the market. It's down to the young'uns to develop into capable options, or else another injury like Ryan's will sink the rotation again. I would push for another major acquisition like Odorizzi/Gray/Lopez trades, but it's hard to see that happening this offseason.

    Please, please stay healthy! I just want to see him play a full season, then see what happens.

    I'd non-tender Tonkin, he's the type of guy I'd rather have on a minor league deal. Decent chance he'll be available later in the season on waivers anyways.

    What did he ever do to me? Well, he disappointed me by failing to live up to the hype of being a legitimately good reliever in 2013-17. So yeah, I guess I do have some beef with Tonkin! 😉

    Ed Donatell deserves some credit after Jones torched his defense two times in the last month of the 2022 season. Hopefully he got a thank-you card in the mail or something.

    Interesting, Nick had 10% odds on Adams getting protected, but now that I further examine the numbers I can see the logic behind it. He was solid his second time around in Wichita, and with his stuff hitting 97 MPH, I could also see him being a weapon if converted to the pen. And he's actually been durable, unlike a good chunk of our pitching prospects! I get not protecting Rosario, he could get claimed in a Baddoo-like situation but I think he's a year away from needing to be added. Methinks Olivar is also a year away. I don't see the worry with losing Moran, I'm surprised he wasn't a minor league free agent. He could have been claimed on waivers when he was outrighted. Not a big deal at all if we lose him, though they need to start adding lefty relievers in this organization. For that reason, it'd be nice to keep MacLeod.

    A lottery ticket by definition isn’t a “legit” prospect, the odds of Gil panning out were slim. And it’s not as if Cave was acquired to just be a bench player, he accrued 2.5 WAR over 530 PAs his first two years. The wheels started to come off after that but I can’t blame the front office for trading a low-odds prospect who won’t have his rookie season for another 6 years for a player who can help the current team. They lose the trade in hindsight, but the process is fine in my opinion. I’d greenlight the front office to acquire a MLB ready 4th outfielder prospect at the cost of a 19 year old non top 20 pitching prospect again.

    Big problem for the offense is no Darrisaw, they aren't run blocking the same without him. The run game hasn't been what it was since that early stretch, and they can only lean on the passing game so much. Defensively, they're legit (average of 9 points per game being allowed over the past 3 games), they have some issues in the secondary but they can mostly cover that up with their ability to shut down the run and rush the passer. I don't see them beating the buzzsaw that is Detroit but they can play a close game against any of the other NFC contenders right now. They are due for a letdown at some point as it's wild they are 8-2. My early guess is they lose next week to the Bears because they often slip up at Soldier Field and the Bears might be able to do something offensively now that they fired their OC. But nobody on the schedule really scares you, the Seahawks and Cardinals are decent teams and the Falcons are far more fraudulent than us. Packers run hot and cold.
