  1. Even without McCaffrey, the 49ers are scary good. Way, way better than the Giants in all respects outside of not having a iDL guy like Lawrence.
  2. That’s a system-wide issue, not just a Baldelli one. The likes of Martin, Julien, and Miranda have come up from the minors not close to ready to play certain positions and have spent time playing positions they wouldn’t be able to in the minors.
  3. Yeah, this seems to go under the radar with all the attention Rocco gets. This so called “best bullpen in baseball” turned out to be questionable, not to mention a washed up Thielbar is their best lefty. Margot and Farmer were two of the bigger re-signings / acquisitions on the season, alongside basically every vet reliever they added. Add in the injuries and the depth hasn’t held up. A fire and brimstone manager might be able to rally this team to a degree but there are too many shortcomings to do anything with this roster the way it’s constructed.
  4. I don't think it's been the NFC central since 2002... 😉 I have them going 7-10 but they're closer to 8 wins than 6. They'll be competitive in most games, but there are some deficiencies holding this team back. Darnold is not a good QB and O'Connell still has yet to figure out how to run an effective rushing attack. The defense should be good but I wonder about the durability of some players on that unit.
  5. I'm in complete agreement, my point was that sticking with Ober isn't a sure thing even if it is the more logical call. And also that it is difficult to be sure that Rocco is the only manager in baseball who makes that decision.
  6. How do we know that the other 29 managers don't make this mistake, though? Last I've seen Rocco pulls his starters at an average rate and plenty of other fanbases also think their managers are horrible, unless you've been watching all of the other teams how do you know? And even if Ober gets through the 8th without giving up any runs (which isn't a sure thing), how do we know Jax doesn't blow the game in the 9th like he blew it in the 8th? Look, I don't like Rocco either and I am on board with him getting fired. But the assumptions about how the game would go aren't as sure of things as people seem to think they are. And any manager in MLB is screwed when their top two relievers give up a combined 7 baserunners in one inning. And the next Twins manager may as well make this same mistake - who's to say this regime even thinks that was a bad call?
  7. Maybe because Duran has been struggling lately and they wanted him to face the bottom of the lineup and have Jax face the heart of the lineup in the 9th? Funnily enough, I can remember years ago (in the days of Glen Perkins as our closer) when many here complained about how our best pitcher shouldn't only be used in the 9th in save situations and be used earlier just to get to the 9th inning with a lead. And now we've wrapped back around to defined roles. Personally I am unsure which is the better method.
  8. At what point is it on the player for not performing? Rocco used his two best relievers and they gave up 4 hits and a HBP to the 6 to 2 hitters in the lineup. Even if Ober goes the 8th, the 9th is still likely to be blown.
  9. I also would have kept Ober in the game longer, but if Duran can't get the likes of Fermin, Grossman, and Isbel out then we have major problems. Er, more major problems. Duran falling behind Alcala on the high leverage totem pole would be something.
  10. If Duran can't handle the bottom of the Royals lineup... yikes.
  11. If anything, Lewis feeling that he is unprepared to play 2B is in line with what many think here - they're trying to make these guys versatile when they're not and not fully preparing them to play at these positions. No wonder Lewis messes up the play at 2B the other day. And this isn't just a major league thing, it's been an issue in the minors.
  12. That was always the rub with extending Buxton... it was a bargain of a deal but he consistently couldn't make it healthy to the end of most of his seasons played. No reason to think that won't stop happening the older he gets.
  13. Yikes. Vazquez pinch hitting in a do-or-die situation with a now sub-.600 OPS... gross.
  14. Hey, first career hit for Helman. Nice!
  15. Nice job by the bullpen holding up, let's hope for some longer starts in these next couple days.
  16. They don't have to play great to get in, but if they continue to play as they are, they won't be winning many playoff games. Which I believe is the goal...
  17. Lewis' clutchness seems like he adds another 5+ wins to this team. Even in the midst of a slump he saves the team with that HR.
  18. Lopez picked the right time of the year to get hot! He does seem to struggle in the early months and dominate later in the summer. I'll have to look at his splits as a Marlin to confirm this.
  19. No waiver claims for the Vikings, they only lost Nwangwu to the Saints on waivers. Practice squads will fill up now, I suspect they add another RB. Could be to the PS to start and promote him to the 53 man later. Yup, they already have. He and McCain are the two confirmed PS names right now.
  20. The bullpen mopped up this game shockingly well... too bad Ober's abysmal start didn't let them get back into this game.
  21. Except for a similar play Jorge threw away in the playoffs against the Astros…
  22. Yup, this summarizes my concern. The young arms are promising but it's hard to rely on them for enough innings, and the bullpen does not have the horses to cover this many innings. Joe Ryan going down and the total failure of adding relievers in the offseason + deadline are the biggest factors.
  23. I won't defend the pinch-hitting nonsense, but are we really expecting Rocco to treat Julien like a reliever and pull him when he makes mistakes? Hasn't he been better fielding at 2B, and is there any precedent for him getting spelled late with a defensive replacement? I dunno, I think this is over-analysis. At some point, poor play has to be pinned on the player and not the manager. Matthews has some nasty stuff, if he can get that pitch count down he might be able to get a little further into games. He has a bright future.
  24. I don't see the argument against Gray. His numbers are very strong and his FIP suggests his ERA will decrease. Of course it's risky to pay pitchers into their mid-30s, but do you the Cardinals regret handing out that deal? Absolutely not.
