  1. My prediction: Lions by 4.
  2. From what I'm seeing, it's a 98% chance of going to the playoffs if they win 2/3.
  3. Falcons Arthur Smith needs to go. He stinks.
  4. It seems too late in the year to add another QB who'd need to learn O'Connell's system, but I wouldn't completely rule it out. You have to think the Jets inquired, with how they were starting Tim freaking Boyle.
  5. I think he's safe, they have a bad roster and he's a strong leader of men. Heck, I could see another team trading for him if Ten really wants to move on. The more I watch the Bears, the more I think they are fooled into keeping him. It sounds like Kraft is going to axe him once the season is over, but there have been trade talks floating around. He's still a great DC but he's been a horrid GM for years now and the offensive side of the ball has deteriorated under his management. No way would I take him as a HC at this point, despite how great he was for a long time.
  6. Shoulda been fired after that inexcusable playoff loss... We got Scorigami!
  7. How is this the same Raiders team?! O'Connell is playing so much better against this defense. Flores really is a wizard.
  8. It's hard to rely on him based off his health, but they should certainly keep working on developing him. They have the flexibility to send him to AAA if need be to work on his stuff. Just don't write his name in pen on the 26 man roster.
  9. That was surprising... but I guess it's another example of a team thinking a pitcher with a high ERA will regress to the FIP.
  10. Ober and Ryan would have been fine starting a playoff game if it were in the first half / 75% point of the season, but they both seemed to run out of gas / momentum. Heck, Ryan got sent to the minors at the end of the year. At their best you could trust them, but they'd be doomed if they reach the playoffs with the same version of their 2023 September selves. Paddack is a wildcard, he could return to being a quality starter like he was in San Diego or he could have a rocky "first year off TJ" season. Varland might make it as a #5 starter but certainly isn't going to be starting in the playoffs. It's nice to have the option to slide him to the pen. So yeah, they need to add one starter who you could trust in the playoffs. Doesn't need to be an ace, Lopez can handle that.
  11. Flacco would have made some sense instead of trading for Dobbs, but there's no point in bringing in another guy who'd need to learn the system. Mullens is fine enough, and his San Fran numbers are better than anything Flacco has done since his Baltimore days, though Mullens is less secure with the ball. Let's roll with the guy who's been O'Connell's chosen #2 for the past two years.
  12. People complain about void years in the NFL, but at least those are only allowed on signing bonuses and can only go out one year after the player is no longer on the team. This is ludicrous in comparison and should not be allowed.
  13. The amount of injuries that are piling up make it difficult, absolutely - but we just put up 13 total points in two games against bottom 5 defenses. The Raiders defense is basically Crosby and a bunch of guys, the Bears secondary was half-injured and playing a bunch of rookies and looked great too. I'm trying to keep my expectations low, but even when we were healthy the offense under Kirk was only averaging 21 points a game. O'Connell's plan for the run game was flawed from the start. Heck, this next week against the Bengals I'll consider 14 points scored acceptable and anything more than that a job well done. Though we'll have to see what the injury report looks like. Sounds like JJ will be alright.
  14. O'Connell just spent the past 2 weeks deciding to go with Dobbs and ran out a very similar gameplan as they ran in Chicago and it worked even worse... and then he benched Dobbs for Mullens and the passing game improved immediately. My issue with the coaching is O'Connell's insistence on using Dobbs as a pocket passer when he clearly isn't that. He should have made the switch to Mullens over the bye week to fit with what he was going to call - if there is "no magic sauce" that exists to get Dobbs to be effective, then it was irresponsible to be starting him in the first place.
  15. The heck was that game? How did we go from having a terrible defense last year to a lights-out one so fast? And how did the offense become this terrible? Alright, those are rhetoric questions - Flores is the best DC in the game and some young talent is stepping up, and O'Connell is calling clunker after clunker. How the heck was this the gameplan coming out of the bye week? Clearly, this system is tailored to a pocket passer QB like Mullens and it took that long to bench Dobbs? The injuries are getting ridiculous and it's alright if the offense struggles because of them, but this was a horrific game. Thank goodness the defense has balled out or we'd be in the running for a high draft pick.
  16. I didn't expect them to take anyone. Maybe if one of the early names like Matt Sauer fell to them. Nice to see they didn't lose anyone, but we'd be alright without Prato or Keirsey.
  17. I think they need to add a couple relievers, at least one pretty good one. Losing Pagan, being iffy with Thielbar at his age, not sure Stewart can pick up back where he left off, Varland being needed for rotational depth, and Funderburk having little MLB experience is the basis for my thinking. They don't need to go nuts, but they have put themselves in bad spots in prior years with their lack of bullpen additions before. Also, get Winder, Sands, and Canterino going as full-time relievers and see if they can offer you anything. Their days as starters are over.
  18. Yeah, that's a tricky one. He was basically gifted the backup job in 2021 because he was vaccinated, but then when he played in the preseason games he was so inaccurate that they felt they were forced to bring Mannion back. They didn't even want him back on the PS. Instead, he spent 2 years on Cincy's practice squad and in Year 3 he won their backup job. Part of it seems to be that he needed more time, but the accuracy thing... usually you got it or you don't. Sometimes it can be coached up, but clearly the old regime had zero ability to develop young QBs. They needed finished products.
  19. Pretty crazy how we beat San Fran, and they just undressed the Eagles in Philly. Fully healthy, they are a scary squad that we probably aren't beating again if we do encounter them in the playoffs.
  20. I think Steer would have gotten ample chances at 3B/1B once Miranda broke down and Kirilloff had his problems. Maybe then Lewis plays more CF and we see less Michael Taylor out there. CES probably gets a short call-up or two but doesn't get the chances he did in Cincy. In that alternate situation, we're probably discussing how one of these guys is getting moved, whether it be Steer/Julien/Polanco.
  21. Prescott is playing the best football of his career, but their defense is getting cooked at home against a Seahawks offense that has been up and down this year. Exciting game, far better than most clunkers we're getting on primetime.
  22. Fields just isn't accurate at all, there's only so much you can coach up. With better coaching he could improve his vision and pocket presence, but he's still missing some key components that will keep him away from becoming a franchise QB. I noticed similar things with Marcus Mariota, he got plugged into some bad offenses in Tennessee and got a second shot in Atlanta with the best OL and weapons (Pitts was coming off a 1000 yard rookie year) he'd ever had, yet he still played like a bust and eventually got benched. And while their coaching isn't the cream of the crop, Mariota got his chances and failed. Even the best QB coach there is, Kyle Shanahan, gave up on a ultra-talented QB prospect in Trey Lance for a wimpy 4th round pick. There are limits to how much coaching can fix. Pittsburgh's defense has mostly been responsible for the wins, as their passing game has been atrocious. Bad enough that they just fired a coach mid-season for the first time since 1941. Belichick's defense hasn't been as good, and they also don't have a run game like Pittsburgh does. I do think Jones could be a low-end starter as we saw flashes of that in his rookie year, but he's been coached by the likes of Matt Patricia and Bill O'Brien...
  23. I was surprised he didn't get another chance after he pitched rather well for us. I suppose he didn't have very good stuff and was probably a ticking time bomb.
  24. Some names I've seen: Matt Sauer (NYY) throws 95-96, had a good year in AA with a nice strikeout rate. Move him to the bullpen and see what happens. Ian Bedell (STL) pitched very well at A+ and will be a year further away from Tommy John. Maybe you hide him in the bullpen and send him back to the minors later to have him keep working on being a starter.
  25. I think part of the problem is that defensive lines are generally better than offensive lines these days, preventing good RBs from being great ones. The upside of a passing play is just so much higher than a run play, breaking a long run is rare while completing a deep pass happens at least once per game... not to mention you can get a DPI and get a bunch of free yardage. It's gonna take better O-linemen and more favorable rules to let the running game become more dominant.
