I certainly don't see that in his stats from 2015-17 (4.56 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, 9.6 H/9, 1.4 HR/9) plus he's also coming off of Tommy John surgery, which can take a full year after rehab to gain top form. I think he's a 3 at best.

This Thorpe guy looks like he could be something special. I'm impressed with his numbers at AA, especially the number of strikeouts he's gotten. At his age and level of experience, I think he'll need plenty of seasoning in AAA. You could also say that about a lot of other Twins starters who are on the fringe. I'm going to repost my list of 2019 Twins starters in the current pipeline ranked by arbitrary starter "numbers". #1: None #2: Berrios, Romero #3: Gibson (up from #4), Thorpe (new) #4: Odorizzi, Littell, Pineda, Gonsalves (down from #3), #5: Mejia, Stewart (new) AAAA: Slegers, others I really like the depth here. I'm so very glad we can be done with the likes of P. J. Walters, Cole DeVries, Adam Wilk, and Tim Melville. There's a lot of talent that could use MLB auditions like Gonsalves, Littell, Romero, and Mejia's out of options next year. I don't feel like all of these guys are going to get their chances... perhaps we could see one or two packaged in a trade along with other prospects over the offseason?

Article: Twins Daily Roundtable: Closing Time
Danchat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like some of these ideas, the problem is we have a manager who subscribes to the theory that there must be a designated closer on the team and they must pitch in a save situation every single time. I like the idea... Odorizzi could be a very good reliever and he's got the stuff to get a lot of K's in the 9th. At the moment I can see the team trying that out, though. -
Seeing Duffey pitch well and having Moya be decent... good thing we had Belisle pitch so many innings, right? I'd throw May's name in there but I guess he's the new Magill.

Article: DET 5, MIN 3: Is There Anything Left?
Danchat replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Alright, fine, that did happen last year. And they were promptly crushed in the playoffs. That wasn't going to happen this year. This team clearly isn't ready to compete for anything. I know in hindsight it's frustrating that they didn't go for it, but the 2017 squad didn't have the foresight to see the 2018 being a massive disappointment. The FO did what they had to do at the 2018 deadline even if they may have done the wrong thing at the 2017 deadline. -
Can we get Wade up as the 4th OF now that he's healthy? Perhaps the Twins can DFA Field and slip him off the 40 man roster but keep him in the system, because I certainly don't want him on the 40 man over the offseason.

We don't get to see post-hype prospects very often, so it'll be interesting to see how Stewart does. His minor league stats haven't been so great and I don't think he necessarily deserved the promotion to AAA, but they might as well give the guy a chance. I heard LEN3 say a few weeks ago on the radio that the Twins were working with Gonsalves [this season] to try and strengthen his secondary pitches since his fastball doesn't go much past 90. It sounded like the FO wasn't that interested in his overall stats but rather if his secondary pitches was getting guys out. I wonder if this development is why he's taking longer to reach the majors - if so, then I'm fine with it.

Article: BREAKING: Twins Trade Rodney To A's
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Duffey is getting called back up to take Rodney's spot. It's possible it's going to be Tyler's last hurrah on the roster unless he looks better this time around. -

The problem is that nobody's going to trade for Santana when he's struggling to throw 90 and is rather ineffective. Maybe you could flip him as a long reliever, but I have a feeling they might need to shut him down on the DL for the rest of the year. -

Huh... I thought they'd hold on to him and use his option, but I'm fine that they'd didn't. I'm interested to see who'll get the opportunity to close games... Hildy and Reed would probably be the top options but I don't think they should at the moment. Let's get an arm from AAA and figure things out from there. -
Yeah, I think they'd be much better off with Kepler in CF and Cave in RF. I think Cave would be a perfectly fine defender in LF or RF.

My diagnosis is that Hildy caught Belisleitis. I think they can put him on the DL for that, however.

Oh, a good game for Gordon. More please! I wonder if there's enough time for Rooker to try out AAA? And maybe we can get Austin up here before September? That'd be nice.

OK, so Alcala's seemingly fine on the injury front. I'm thinking he's going to end up in the bullpen in the majors, at least that's the impression I got when I read some scouting reports. And Larnach getting promoted is good news too, hopefully we can see him have a similar trajectory as Rooker has had so far. AA next year, perhaps? And boy, Royce Lewis just continues to rake. So glad the Twins took this guy even though nobody thought he was worth the first overall pick - except for the front office, and that's all that matters.

Article: CLE 10, MIN 0: Who Needs Chris Gimenez?
Danchat replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Activate Magill, DFA Belisle. This better be what happens tomorrow. Also, Bauer simply looks dominant and the Indian hitters are good when they need to be. I don't know if Cleveland's going to be able to take down Houston in the playoffs (if that's how the seeding plays out), but they should be able to give him a difficult time. Even with the guys we traded away, Cleveland's easily better. -
Debunking Your Favorite Logical Fallacies Regarding the Twins at the Trade Deadline
Danchat commented on Brandon Warne's blog entry in BW on the Beat
I agree with your approach, but it's still on the FO that their acquisitions mostly failed. They made smart moves and they didn't work - at least they didn't sign Darvish or give Cobb a 4 year deal - instead, we have plenty of cap and none paid to Morrison or Lynn. They need to do better next year in free agency but I think they have the right idea. IMO it might be a "players who come to the Twins stink and play better for other teams" problem, but that's just a theory of mine.- 18 comments

Wait, so if the Twins gave Dozier an extension you think he'd play better this season? I highly doubt that.- 18 comments

I love ya, Ervin, but I think Romero needs your rotation spot. He needs to learn how to beat MLB hitting and I'm not sure he'll be able to learn that in AAA. Twins rookie starters seem to need to take their lumps before they take off.

Article: Week in Review: Moving Forward
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sano is trending the right direction and I think Polanco is finally solidifying himself as a starting MLB SS. Mejia looks like he might stick as a starter in the rotation, and that's huge. Trevor May and Matt Magill might be able to carve out roles in the bullpen - that's another plus for the 2019 season. So far, things aren't so bad even though we traded 20% of the 25 man roster away. But can we please end the Belisle experiment? Please?! If you're going to try and figure out Oliver Drake, fine, but get rid of Belisle and work on another AAA reliever. We're figuring out things about May, Magill, and Moya so far, and we need to do that with more of the AAA guys.- 45 replies

Article: Departures Don’t Change Twins Future
Danchat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The last few months here, all the talk has been about Sano and Buxton not panning out - it seems several Twins fans have been admitting it. Question - would Jake Cave and LaMonte Wade be good backup plans for Buxton? I'd rather have Cave in LF or RF, but Kepler can play decent CF. Cave looks like he'll look like a good 4th OF but we haven't seen Wade in the big leagues yet - I'd like to find out if he could be a big factor on this team next year (possibly replacing Grossman?).- 42 replies

Article: Departures Don’t Change Twins Future
Danchat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hmmm, I can't quite agree. The "massive" rebuild should have started in 2011-2012, but they never fully went in. Likewise, this isn't a true rebuild - if it was, we'd see guys like Rosario and Berrios get traded for big packages of prospects. The Twins should be competitive right now, but the core of prospects has mostly failed (Sano, Buxton, Kepler have disappointed, and the pitching of Meyer, May, and later on, Jay and Stewart, have been huge failures). As Ted mentions, the division still mostly stinks and things could go right like they did in 2016, so I could definitely see the Twins in the playoffs in 2019, so no, I don't see a massive rebuild coming. Right now I'd wager they'll land in the $120-130M area. Many here have said that the Twins will have a tough time spending their $60-70M, but I disagree. I think they'll spend most of it and only drop the cap from 2018 a small amount.- 42 replies
